Introduction to Computers

1. What is a Computer?

A computer is an electronic machine that can receive data (input), process it using a set of

instructions (called programs), store the data, and produce output (results). It can perform a wide

variety of tasks very quickly and accurately.

Key Functions of a Computer:

- Input: Receiving data and instructions from input devices (keyboard, mouse, scanner).

- Processing: The CPU (Central Processing Unit) processes the data.

- Storage: Data can be saved temporarily (RAM) or permanently (hard drive, SSD).

- Output: Results are sent to output devices (monitor, printer).

2. Evolution of Computers

- First Generation: Vacuum tubes, very large and slow.

- Second Generation: Transistors, smaller and faster.

- Third Generation: Integrated Circuits (ICs), more compact.

- Fourth Generation: Microprocessors, modern computers.

- Fifth Generation: AI-powered, intelligent systems.

3. Basic Parts of a Computer System

Component - Description

- Monitor - Displays text, images, videos (Visual Output)

- Keyboard - Used to input text and commands

- Mouse - Controls the pointer on the screen

- CPU (System Unit) - Processes all data and instructions

- Speakers - Output sound

- Printer - Produces hard copies of documents

- Webcam - Captures images and videos (Input)

4. Types of Computers

- Desktop Computers: Fixed in one place, used in offices.

- Laptop Computers: Portable, used in school and work.

- Tablets: Touch-based and portable.

- Smartphones: Mini computers used for calls and internet.

- Servers: High-performance machines that provide services to other computers.

5. Importance of Computers in Daily Life

- Education: Research, e-learning, typing assignments.

- Banking: ATM, online banking, account management.

- Business: Email, communication, presentations.

- Health Care: Patient records, diagnosis software.

- Communication: Email, social media, video calls.
