developers to define the structure and layout of a web page, including text, images, links, and other
multimedia elements.

A web page serves as a fundamental building block for a website because websites are
composed of multiple web pages that are interconnected through hyperlinks and organized under
a common domain name. Each of web page typically contains specific content, such as text,
images, videos, or interactive elements, and is accessed through a web browser.

TECHNICAL WRITING IS NO LONGHER BOUND TO HARD COPY

Indeed, technical writing has evolved significantly with the emergence of web pages and
digital media. Traditionally, technical writing was primarily associated with hardcopy documents
such as manuals, guides, and reports. However, with the rapid growth of the internet and the
popularity of web pages, technical writing has transitioned into a digital era.
ONLINE VS. HARDCOPY

In the modern era, the preference between online and hardcopy content largely depends on the
context, the audience, and the specific needs of the individual. Both formats have their advantages
and disadvantages, and understanding these can help in making informed choices. Online content,
especially in the form of web pages, has become increasingly popular due to its accessibility,
convenience, and interactivity.

TO CREATE AN EFFECTIVE WEBSITE STUDENTS SHPULD ABLE TO ABIDE THE

FOLLOWING

Home Page. The homepage of a website is like the front door of a house—it's the first thing visitors
see and sets the tone for their entire experience . When you arrive at a website, by typing in
its URL (Uniform Resource Locator, the website address), you should see:

•A title of the product or service

The title should effectively communicate the main purpose or value proposition of the
website, it helps visitors quickly understand what they can expect to find and whether the site
meets their needs or interests.

The title should be clear, descriptive, and memorable, it makes a strong first impression
and encourages visitors to explore further.

•Contact information: street address, e-mail address, phone number, and/or fax

Including contact information on the home page of a website is needed in home page, as it
provides visitors with a convenient way to reach out to the website owner or administrator.

•A graphic representing the topic

It’s common for a home page to feature a graphic or image that represents the topic or
theme of the website. This graphic is often referred to as the main image or main section. The
purpose of that image is to immediately capture the visitor's attention and convey the essence or
main focus of the website.
•An introductory lead-in telling readers who the company is and/or what the product or
service entails

It’s common to encounter an introductory lead-in that provides essential information about
the company, product, or service. This introductory section is crucial for setting the tone, capturing
visitors' attention, and informing them about what the website offers.

• Hypertext links (leading to the linked screens, the major text and development for the
website)

When you arrive at a website's home page by typing its URL into your web browser, you should
indeed see hypertext links. These links are typically attached or fixed within the content of the
home page and it serve as navigation elements that allow you to access other pages or sections of
the website.

Page Layout

The layout of a web page refers to the arrangement and organization of its various elements,
such as text, images, navigation menus, and interactive components. A well-designed page layout
ensures that the content is presented in a visually appealing and user-friendly manner, facilitating
easy navigation and engagement.

A successful web page should only use about 2/3 of the screen for text because it's hard for anyone
to read an online page from margin to margin due to a number of challenges. These include pixel
monitor resolution, scrolling, glare, distortion, animation, etc. To solve these problems, limit line
length, using about 1/3 of the screen for your navigation bar and 2/3 for the text.

So here’s an example of page layout. The arrangement of page layout.

As you can see in the picture, the page layout started from the title by using a big size to
highlight it. Second with the subtopics which is used by a medium size of font. And the others that
are not that important are used in a small size of font.

Navigation
The navigation part of a web page refers to the section or elements that enable users to move
around and explore different sections or pages of the website. It serves as a roadmap, allowing
visitors to easily navigate through the content and find what they are looking for.

Online, readers can't turn pages, so they need some way to get from screen to screen. You

help them by providing:

•A "Home" button on each web page

Indeed, providing a "Home" button on each web page is a common and effective way to
help online readers navigate through a website. The "Home" button serves as a convenient and
easily accessible means for users to return to the main or introductory page of the website, often
referred to as the home page.

•A navigational bar or separate hypertext linked words or icons to all web pages within the
website

A navigation bar, typically located at the top of the web page, presents a set of menu items
or links that represent the main sections or pages of the website. Each menu item is labeled with
descriptive text, such as "Home," "About Us," "Services," "Products," "Blog," "Contact," etc.
Therefore, providing a clear and intuitive navigation system is essential for guiding users through
a website and helping them easily access different pages or sections.

Highlighting

Highlighting techniques in web pages are used to draw attention to specific elements,
making them stand out from the surrounding content.

•Colored or patterned backgrounds. Be sure the text is clearly legible, clear enough to read by
striving for "optimum contrast ", for example black text on a white background or yellow text on
a blue background.
•Horizontal divider lines. Horizontal divider lines are commonly used in web design to visually
separate different sections or elements on a web page. They help improve readability, organization
by creating clear visual distinctions between content areas.

•Iconic bullets. Using graphical icons or symbols as bullets in lists can add visual interest and
improve the organization and readability of information. Common icons used as bullets include
arrows, checkmarks, circles, squares, stars, and custom-designed icons relevant to the content.

•Colored text. Highlighting text with colors can be an effective technique for drawing attention
to important information or emphasizing key points on a web page.

•Different font sizes (first level headings, second level headings, etc.). Highlighting techniques,
including different font sizes for headings, are crucial for organizing content and guiding users
through a web page.

•Tables and figures. You can effectively draw attention to tables and figures on web
pages, making them more visually engaging, informative, and accessible to readers

Consciousness

This refers to using short words short sentences, and short is paragraphs. Again, this is
important because people have trouble reading text online and readers want to read or consider
something quickly in order to understand the main points, without studying it in detail. Employing
short words, sentences, and paragraphs in web design contributes to consciousness by improving
readability, accessibility, scan ability, mobile optimization, clarity, and visual appeal. By
prioritizing concise language and formatting, you create a more user-friendly and inclusive
experience for all visitors to your website

This refers to answering reporter's question and providing specific. When discussing clarity in
web page design with a reporter, it's important to provide specific examples and insights to
illustrate how clarity can be achieved. Clarity in web page design is essential for ensuring that
information is presented in a clear, understandable, and user-friendly manner
Tone

This may be achieved through positive word usage and personalized pronouns. The Internet is a
very friendly communication medium. By incorporating these techniques into the content of the
web page, you can create a tone that is positive, friendly, and personalized, fostering a strong
connection with visitors and enhancing their overall experience on the website

Audience Need

This may be addressed by defining terms, using the appropriate tone, and developing ideas
at the appropriate level. You can accomplish this by deciding if your readers are high tech, low
tech or lay. By defining terms, using the appropriate tone, and developing ideas at the appropriate
level based on the audience's technical proficiency, you can ensure that your web page effectively
meets the needs of all users, regardless of their level of technological expertise. This approach
promotes inclusivity, clarity, and engagement, ultimately enhancing the overall user experience
and driving positive outcomes for your website.
