Make list of 10 algebraic functions and find domain?

1.f(x)=2x3-5x2+7x-3

Solve: The function f(x) is defined for all real values of x

∴ 𝐷𝑜𝑚, 𝑓 = {𝑥: 𝑥 ∈ ℝ}

= {−∞, +∞}

2.f(x)=|x|+|x-1|

Solve:𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 + |𝑥 − 1|
−𝑥 − 𝑥 − 1 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑥 < 0
= 𝑥 − 𝑥 − 1 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 0 ≤ 𝑥 < 1
𝑥 + 𝑥 − 1 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑥 ≥ 1
−2𝑥 + 1 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑥 < 0
= 1 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 0 ≤ 𝑥 < 1
2𝑥 − 1 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑥 ≥ 1

∴ 𝐷𝑜𝑚, 𝑓 = 𝑥 < 0 ∪ 0 ≤ 𝑥 < 1 ∪ 𝑥 ≥ 1

= (−∞, 0) ∪ 0,1 ∪ [1, ∞)
= (−∞, +∞)

𝟓
3.f(x)=𝒙−𝟐

Solve: Here f(x) is defined for all real values except

𝑥−2=0
Because, denominator cannot equal zero
𝑥−2≠0
⇒𝑥≠2
∴ 𝐷𝑜𝑚, 𝑓 = (−∞, 2) ∪ (2, ∞)
𝒙+𝟑
4.f(x)=
𝒙𝟐 −𝟏𝟔

Solve: Here, we cannot take any values for which the function is
Undefined and complex

For that, 𝑥 + 3 ≥ 0
⇒ 𝑥 ≥ −3
And also, x2 −16 > 0
⇒ (𝑥 − 4)(𝑥 + 4) > 0
∴ 𝑥 > 4 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥 > −4
∴ 𝐷𝑜𝑚, 𝑓 = (4, ∞)

𝟏
5.f(x)= 𝒙−𝟏 (𝒙−𝟓)

Solve: Here, f(x) is defined for all real values except

𝑥 − 1 = 0 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥 − 5 = 0

Because the denominator cannot equal zero

Now, 𝑥 − 1 ≠ 0
⇒𝑥≠1
𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥 − 5 ≠ 0
⇒𝑥≠5

∴ 𝐷𝑜𝑚, 𝑓 = {𝑥: 𝑥 ∈ ℝ 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥 ≠ 1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥 ≠ 5}

= (−∞, 4) ∪ 4,5 ∪ (5, ∞)

6.f(x)= 𝑥 − 1+ 5 − 𝑥
Solve: For this type of function the value of domain cannot be less
than zero. Because, we know when negative numbers comes in
square root it becomes complex.

For domain,
𝑥−1≥0
⇒𝑥≥1
𝑎𝑛𝑑 5 − 𝑥 ≥ 0
⇒𝑥≤5

∴ 𝐷𝑜𝑚, 𝑓 = 𝑥: 𝑥 ∈ ℝ, 1 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 5
= [1,5]

1
7.f(x)=1−2𝑥 – 𝑥 + 3

Solve: Here, f(x) to be defined

1 − 2𝑥 ≠ 0
1
⇒𝑥≠2
𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥 + 3 ≥ 0
⇒ 𝑥 ≥ −3
1
∴ 𝐷𝑜𝑚, 𝑓 = {𝑥: 𝑥 ∈ ℝ, 𝑥 ≥ −3 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥 ≠ 2}

8.f(x)=x2+5

Solve: Here, the function is defined for all real number of x

∴ 𝐷𝑜𝑚, 𝑓 = ℝ

𝟏−𝒙
9.f(x)=𝒙𝟐 −𝟑𝒙−𝟐𝟖

Solve: Here, f(x) is defined for all real values except x2-3x-28=0
Because denominator cannot equal zero
Now, x2-3x-28≠0
⇒ 𝑥−7 𝑥+4 ≠0
⇒ 𝑥 ≠ 7 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ⇒ 𝑥 ≠ −4
∴ 𝐷𝑜𝑚, 𝑓 = 𝑥: 𝑥 ∈ ℝ, 𝑥 ≠ 7 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥 ≠ −4
= −∞, −4 ∪ −4,7 ∪ (7, ∞)
10.f(x)= 𝟖𝟏 − 𝒙𝟐

Solve: For this type of function the value of domain cannot be less
than zero. Because, we know that when negative number comes in
square root it becomes complex.

For domain,81 − 𝑥 2 ≥ 0
⇒ 9 + 𝑥 (9 − 𝑥) ≥ 0
⇒ 𝑥 ≥ −9 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥 ≤ 9
∴ 𝐷𝑜𝑚, 𝑓 = 𝑥: 𝑥 ∈ ℝ, −9 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 9
= [−9,9]

Make list of 10 Logarithmic, Trigonometric,

Exponential function and find domain?

Logarithmic Function:

1. y=log 2 (𝑥 2 − 2𝑥)

Solve: Let’s function,

𝑦 = log 2 {𝑥 𝑥 − 2 }
⇒ 𝑥(𝑥 − 2) > 0
Now, test point on each interval,
𝑊ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑥 = −1 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑛 −1 −1 − 2 = 3
𝑊ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑥 = 1 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑛 1 1 − 2 = −1
𝑊ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑥 = 3 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑛 3 3 − 2 = 3
∴ 𝐷𝑜𝑚𝑎𝑖𝑛 = −∞, 0 ∪ (2, ∞)
𝒙−𝟏
2. y=𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝟐 { }
(𝒙+𝟐)𝟐

𝑥−1
Solve: Let’s find the domain (𝑥+2)2
>0
Now, test point on each interval,
−3−1
𝑊ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑥 = −3 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑛 2 = −4
(−3+2)
0−1 1
𝑊ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑥 = 0 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑛 =−
(0+2)2 4
2−1 1
𝑊ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑥 = 2 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑛 =
(2+2)2 16
∴ 𝐷𝑜𝑚𝑎𝑖𝑛 = (1, ∞)

𝒙+𝟐
3.f(x)=𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝟏 ( 𝒙−𝟐)
𝟐

Solve: Now, 𝑥 + 2 > 0

⇒ 𝑥 > −2
𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥 − 2 ≠ 0
⇒𝑥≠2

Now, test on point each interval,

−3+2 1
𝑊ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑥 = −3 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑛 =
−3−2 5
0+2
𝑊ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑥 = 0 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑛 = −1
0−2
3+2
𝑊ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑥 = 3 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑛 =5
3−2
∴ 𝐷𝑜𝑚, 𝑓 = −∞, −2 ∪ (2, ∞)

4.F(x)=𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝟐 𝒙
Solve: Let’s, 𝑦 = 𝑓 𝑥 = log 2 𝑥
⇒ 2𝑦 = 𝑥
Now, we will plug in values for y and find the corresponding values
of x.
x 1 4 1 2 1 4
y -2 -1 0 2

∴ 𝐷𝑜𝑚𝑎𝑖𝑛 = (0, ∞)
 Trigonometric Function:
𝟏
5.f(x)=𝟐−𝐜𝐨𝐬 𝟑𝒙
Solve: Here, the function is defined for all real numbers. So,
The domain of that function is set of real numbers.
As we know, −1 ≤ cos 3𝑥 ≤ 1
∴ 𝐷𝑜𝑚, 𝑓 = ℝ

6.f(x)=𝐬𝐢𝐧 𝟑𝒙
Solve: This function is defined for all real numbers.
As we know, −1 ≤ sin 3𝑥 ≤ 1
∴ 𝐷𝑜𝑚, 𝑓 = ℝ

7.y=3+5𝐜𝐨𝐬 𝒙
Solve: The function is defined for all real numbers.
∴ 𝐷𝑜𝑚𝑎𝑖𝑛 = ℝ

 Exponential Function:

8.f(x)=𝟒𝒙
Solve: The function is defined for all real numbers. So, the domain
of the function is to set of real numbers.
∴ 𝐷𝑜𝑚, 𝑓 = ℝ
= (−∞, +∞)

9.f(x)=𝟐(𝒙+𝟏) +3
Solve: The function is defined for all real numbers. So, the domain
of the function is to set of real numbers.
