Tut 9

This tutorial covers operational amplifier (op-amp) circuits, focusing on inverting and non-inverting configurations. It includes exercises to calculate output voltages, currents, and gain for various input conditions and circuit designs. Additionally, it addresses the design of a summing op-amp circuit and the analysis of a voltage-follower circuit.

TUTORIAL 9

Topic covered: Op-Amp Inverting & Non-inverting

1. (a) The input to the circuit shown in Figure is vI = −0.20 V. Determine vO, i2, iO, and iL .

(b) Repeat part (a) for vI = 8 sinωt mV.

2. The parameters of the two inverting op-amp circuits connected in cascade in Figure are R1
= 10 kΩ, R2 = 80 kΩ, R3 = 20 kΩ, and R4 = 100 kΩ. For vI = −0.15 V, determine vO1, vO,

i1, i2, i3, and i4. Also determine the current into or out of the output terminal of each op-
amp.

3. Consider the circuit shown in Figure. (a) Determine the ideal output voltage vO if vI = −0.40

V. (b) Determine the actual output voltage if the open-loop gain of the op-amp is Aod = 5
× 103. (c) Determine the required value of Aod in order that the actual voltage gain be

within 0.2 percent of the ideal value.

4. (a) Design an ideal summing op-amp circuit to provide an output voltage of
vO = −2 [(vI 1/4) + 2vI 2 + vI 3]. The largest resistor value is to be 250 kΩ.

(b) Using the results of part (a), determine the range in output voltage and the maximum
current in RF if the input voltages are in the ranges
−2 ≤ vI 1 ≤ +2 V , 0 ≤ vI 2 ≤ 0.5 V, and −1 ≤ vI 3 ≤ 0 V.

5. Consider the ideal noninverting op-amp circuit in Figure. (a) Derive the expression for vO
as a function of vI 1 and vI 2. (b) Find vO for vI 1 = 0.2V and vI 2 = 0.3V.

6. Consider the voltage-follower circuit. Determine the closed-loop voltage gain if the op-
amp open-loop voltage gain Aod is (a) 20, and (b) 2 × 104.

7. Determine each output voltage for (i) vI = 3 V and (ii) vI = −5 V.
