Syllabus MA 52800 Advanced Mathematics for Engineers and Physicists II Spring 2012

Instructor: Prof. E. Birgit Kaufmann Office: Math 748 Telephone: (765) 494-3173 E-Mail: [email protected] Office Hours: MWF 10:30-11:20 pm Lectures: MWF 9.30-10.20 p.m., POTR 262 and on streaming video Course Text: Advanced Engineering Mathematics by Erwin Kreyszig (10th edition), published by John Wiley, 2011, ISBN-13: 978-0470458365. Note that we will use the 10th edition. If you have any other edition (including 'International 10th edition') you need to be sure that the homework problems you do are the ones from the US 10th edition. Course Website: http://www.math.purdue.edu/~ebkaufma/MA528_Spring2012.html This website contains practical information as well as a schedule of lectures and assignments with due dates. All grades (Homework, Midterms and Finals), copies of lecture notes, solutions to selected homework problems, assignment dates and practice exams will be posted on the Purdue West Lafayette Campus Blackboard Vista website: http://www.itap.purdue.edu/tlt/blackboard/. Important: In the event of a major campus emergency, course requirements, deadlines, and grading percentages are subject to changes that may be necessitated by a revised semester calendar or other circumstances beyond the instructor's control. Information about such changes will be posted on the web page given above. Homework: There are assignments for each lesson. All of them are listed on this syllabus. Show your work to explain your answers. No credit will be given for correct answers without explanations. For students enrolled in the live lecture: Homework will be collected weekly in class, typically on Wednesdays. For on-campus and off-campus distance learning students: Homework should be sent in pdf format by email to the following address: [email protected] for the on-campus distance learning students [email protected] for the off-campus distance learning students and time-stamped by the due date (by 11:59pm your local time on the due date). Filename: Please name your homework file in the form LastnameFirstnameHWn, where n is the homework number. Add Pt1, Pt2, etc if you really need to send more than one file (but send just one if possible). So, for the 3rd homework set, I would submit a file named KaufmannBirgitHW3.pdf. Instructions on how to create a pdf file can be found on the course website.

Midterms: There will be two Midterms. They will be given as evening exams on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 in LILY 1105 and Wednesday, April 4, 2012 in WTHR 200. Graded midterms will be returned in class for the students enrolled in the live lecture. The on-campus distance learning students can pick up their graded midterms in the Math main office room MATH 835 after showing their student ID.

Final Exam: There will be a comprehensive final exam during finals week as a common exam for all on-campus students. No calculators may be used on Midterms or in the Final.

Grading Policy: The final course grade will be determined according to the following rules: Midterm I 100 points Homework 100 points Midterm II 100 points Final Exam 150 points The lowest two homework scores will be dropped, but in return, late homework will not be accepted. Important Comments: Class attendance or watching the lecture videos on a regular basis is expected. Reading the sections in the textbook ahead of time is strongly recommended. Academic Adjustments for Students with Disabilities: Students who have been certified by the Office of the Dean of Students Adaptive Programs as eligible for academic adjustments should go to MATH 242 with a copy of their certification letter and request an Information Sheet for this semester, that explains how to proceed this semester to get these adjustments made in Mathematics courses. It is not the same as last semester. This should be done during the first week of classes. Only students who have been certified by the ODOS-Adaptive Programs and who have requested ODOS to send their certification letter to their instructor are eligible for academic adjustments. Students who are currently undergoing an evaluation process to determine whether they are eligible for academic adjustments, are encouraged to find out now what procedures they will have to follow when they are certified, by requesting the above mentioned Information Sheet from MATH 242. Schedule: For video downloads of the lectures, log on to https://engineering.purdue.edu/ProEd/OnCampus/index_html with the ID number: 9999922558 and the course name: ma528. You have to log in initially from a computer or a mobile device on the West Lafayette campus. The process checks for a Purdue IP address before granting access. Once you have downloaded the session to your device, you can view it from anywhere.
