This lab activity teaches how to create and use hierarchies in Tableau for enhanced data organization and visualization. Using a sample dataset with hierarchical data, participants will learn to load data, create a 'Geography' hierarchy, build visualizations, apply filters, and share their work. The activity aims to improve students' data visualization skills through hierarchical drill-down techniques.

Lab Activity: Creating and Using Hierarchies in Tableau
Objective: Understand how to create and use hierarchies in Tableau for better data organization and visualization. Dataset: Use a sample dataset with hierarchical data, such as Sales Data containing: Region (e.g., North, South, East, West) Country (e.g., USA, Canada, India, UK) State (e.g., California, Texas, Maharashtra, Ontario) City (e.g., Los Angeles, Houston, Mumbai, Toronto) Sales Amount
Steps to Perform in Tableau:
Step 1: Load the Data 1. Open Tableau Public. 2. Click "Connect to Data" and load the dataset (Excel, CSV, or Superstore sample dataset). Step 2: Create a Hierarchy 1. Go to the Data Pane (left sidebar). 2. Right-click on the Region field → Click "Create Hierarchy" → Name it "Geography". 3. Drag Country, State, and City into the hierarchy. 4. Your hierarchy should look like: o Geography Region Country State City Step 3: Build a Visualization 1. Drag Geography (Hierarchy) to Rows. 2. Drag Sales Amount to Columns. 3. Click the "+" icon on Region to expand and drill down into the hierarchy (Country → State → City). Step 4: Add Filters & Formatting 1. Add a Filter for Region or Country to explore specific areas. 2. Use Color to differentiate regions in the visualization. 3. Experiment with different Chart Types (Bar Chart, Map, or Tree Map). Step 5: Save and Share 1. Save your workbook as a .twbx file. 2. Upload it to Tableau Public and share the link. This activity will help students understand the power of hierarchical drill-down in Tableau, improving their data visualization skills.
