STANDARDIZATION
INTRODUCTION

Standardization
•Standardization is the process of implementing and developing technical standards
•It can help maximize compatibility, interoperability, repeatability, safety, & quality
•Standardization is implemented greatly when companies release new products to market.
Compatibility is important for products to be successful; this allows consumers to use their new
items along with what they already own.
•By using standardization groups can easily communicate through the set guidelines,in order to
maintain focus.
N.B:
Interoperability:
It’s the ability of making system and organization to work together.

Technical Standard
It is usually a formal document that establishes uniform engineering or technical criteria, methods, processes,
and practices.
Types of Technical Standard:
The primary types of technical standards are:
I. A standard specification is an explicit set of requirements for an item, material, component, system or
service.
II. A standard test method describes a definitive procedure that produces a test result.
III. A standard practice or procedure gives a set of instructions for performing operations or functions.
IV. A standard guide is general information or options that do not require a specific course of action.
V. A standard definition is formally established terminology.
VI. Standard units, in physics and applied mathematics, are commonly accepted measurements of physical
quantities.

Technical Standard
Availability:
Technical standards may exist as:
Public documents on the internet, public library, etc.
Published documents available for purchase
Private documents owned by an organization or corporation

Technical Standard
Geographic levels:
National standard: by National standards organizations. For example, Telecommunications
Industry Association standards
Regional standard: by standards of the Regional standards organizations. For example, SARSO
South Asian Regional Standards Organization
International standard: by International standards organizations Example, ISO and ASTM

International Standards
There are several international organizations that establish standards for weights and measure:
ASTM : American Society for Testing and Materials
ASTM establishes test standards for materials, products, systems, and services for a wide range of
industries.
OIML: The International Organization of Legal Metrology ,
It is an intergovernmental treaty organization .OIML has two grades of membership: member
states(countries that actively participate in technical activities)and corresponding members(countries
that join the /OIML as observers).
It was established in 1955 in order to promote the global harmonization of legal metrology
procedures. OIML has since developed a worldwide technical structure, providing metrological
guidelines for the elaboration of national and regional requirements concerning the manufacture
and use of measuring instruments for legal metrology applications.

Interchangeability.
Interchangeable parts are parts that are, for practical purposes, identical. They are made to
specifications that ensure that they are so nearly identical that they will fit into any assembly of
the same type. One such part can freely replace another, without any custom fitting, such as
filing.
