INTRODUCTION Write objectives on the board Familiarize yourself with typing club, the typing program and lesson format OBJECTIVES: By the end of the session, I will be able to: -Review the basics of typing -Create a weekly goal to improve my words per minute. Participants review the objectives Explain that this session will focus on reviewing basic typing skills. Tell participants that they will take a diagnostic test to see how many words per minute they can type. Tell participants to open the typing club software and set up an account, a typing program, that will help them improve their typing speed. Tell them to use their FULL NAMES as their usernames. Tell participants that after setting up their account, they will take 1 minute diagnostic typing test. Steps: click on “Take a placement test” Click on “start Test” Distribute T-4 Words per minute Log” and record their words per minute in the first row ASK: Did anything surprise you about your typing speed? Explain How did you position your hands when taking the test? Explain Did you spend time, looking down at your keyboard or did you keep your eyes on the screen? Explain NB: Explain the importance of improving their typing speed to excel as a freelancer, especially with transcription work. Explain that they should keep their log to track their progress overtime. TYPING BASICS Tell participants they will review basic typing skills. Say: One technique you will hear is touch typing...It is typing without looking down at your keyboard. Overtime and with practice you will know the location of each key in the keyboard. Typing Dos and Don’ts Form groups of 4 Let them nominate 3 roles A. Aperson who writes down the group’s answers B. A person who will share the group’s list

C. A timer- keeps track of time using a timer in their phone. Give them 5 minutes. Monitor time and walk to ensure participants are all contributing. Call group back after 5 minutes. Let the speakers share the list Highlight Dos and Don’ts participants may have missed Dos- sit up tall, don’t look at the keyboard, learn touch typing, place your feet flat on the floor, don’t give up, avoid using backspace. Don’ts- Don’t look at the keyboard, don’t use one finger, and don’t use excessive force. INTRODUCE THE QWERTY KEYBOARD Emphasise Palms of your hand should float above the keyboard Find finger placement without looking at your keyboard (F&J has tiny raised Dash) Left hand ASDF Right hand JKL; PRACTICE-TYPING LESSONS Tell participants to log into their accounts Go to “take lesson” Follow the instructions; place your hands in the correct position. It will tell you which finger to use for each key. Once they finish the practice they will be given a report of score, accuracy, duration and speed. Record that in the log Encourage the participants to find time to improve their typing speed. CONCLUSION Participants to share what they have learnt. Tell participants to think of one thing to commit to increase their typing speed (e.g. practice for 30 minutes a day).
