Ans-A Process State Diagram visually represents the different states a process goes through during its
lifecycle in an operating system, as well as the transitions between those states.

Process States Explained-1.New:The process is being created.2.Ready:The process is loaded into


memory and is waiting to be assigned to a CPU for execution.3.Running:The process is currently being
executed by the CPU.4.Waiting (Blocked):The process is waiting for some event to occur (e.g., I/O
completion). 5.Terminated:The process has finished execution or was stopped.

State Transitions-1.New → Ready: After process creation and necessary initialization.2.Ready → Running:
When the scheduler picks the process.3.Running → Waiting: When the process requests I/O or some

2. Different between process and program

Components of a PCB:

1.Process State: The current state of the process (e.g., new, ready, running, waiting, terminated).

2.Process ID (PID): A unique identifier assigned to each process.

3.Program Counter: The address of the next instruction to be executed for the process.

4.CPU Registers: The contents of the CPU registers when the process is not executing. This includes
general-purpose registers, stack pointers, and index registers.

5.Memory Management Information: Information about the process's memory allocation, such as
page tables, segment tables, or base and limit registers.

Ans-1. Long-Term Scheduling- Definition: Long-term scheduling, also known as job scheduling,
determines which processes are admitted to the system for processing. It controls the degree of
multiprogramming, which is the number of processes in memory.
 Frequency: This type of scheduling occurs less frequently, typically when a new process is
created or when a process is terminated.

 Goal: The main goal is to maintain a balance between I/O-bound and CPU-bound processes,
ensuring that the system is efficiently utilized.

2. Short-Term Scheduling

 Definition: Short-term scheduling, also known as CPU scheduling, decides which of the ready,
in-memory processes are to be executed (allocated CPU time) next. It is responsible for selecting
a process from the ready queue and allocating CPU time to it.

 Frequency: This scheduling occurs very frequently, often multiple times per second, as
processes are switched in and out of the CPU.

 Goal: The primary goal is to maximize CPU utilization and ensure that all processes get a fair
share of CPU time, minimizing response time and turnaround time.

3. Medium-Term Scheduling

 Definition: Medium-term scheduling is responsible for swapping processes in and out of


memory. It temporarily removes processes from main memory and places them in secondary
storage (swapping) to free up memory for other processes.

 Frequency: This type of scheduling occurs less frequently than short-term scheduling but more
frequently than long-term scheduling.

 Goal: The main goal is to improve the overall system performance by managing the degree of
multiprogramming and ensuring that the system does not become overloaded with processes.

6. Scheduling criteria-1. CPU Utilization-Definition: The percentage of time the CPU is actively
working on processes. Goal: Maximize CPU utilization to ensure that the CPU is busy as much as
possible.

2. Throughput-Definition: The number of processes that complete their execution per time unit.

*Goal: Maximize throughput to ensure that more processes are completed in a given time frame.

3. Turnaround Time-Definition: The total time taken from the submission of a process to its
completion. It includes waiting time, execution time, and any other delays.

 Goal: Minimize turnaround time to ensure that processes are completed quickly.
4. Waiting Time-Definition: The total time a process spends waiting in the ready queue before it gets
CPU time. Goal: Minimize waiting time to reduce delays for processes.

5. Response Time-Definition: The time from when a request is submitted until the first response is
produced (not necessarily the output). This is particularly important for interactive systems.

 Goal: Minimize response time to enhance user experience, especially in interactive applications.

6. Fairness-Definition: Ensuring that all processes get a fair share of the CPU and that no process is
starved of resources. Goal: Achieve fairness to prevent any process from being indefinitely delayed.

7. Starvation-Definition: A situation where a process is perpetually denied the resources it needs to


proceed, often due to the scheduling algorithm favoring other processes.

 Goal: Avoid starvation to ensure that all processes eventually get executed.

8. Predictability-Definition: The ability to predict the behavior of the scheduling algorithm in terms
of response time and resource allocation.

 Goal: Enhance predictability to improve system reliability, especially in real-time systems.

9. Priority- Priority scheduling is a scheduling algorithm used in operating systems where each
process is assigned a priority. The process with the highest priority is selected for execution first. If two
processes have the same priority, they can be scheduled using a secondary criterion, such as First-
Come, First-Served (FCFS).

7.FCFS-FCFS stands for First-Come, First-Served, which is a scheduling algorithm used in various fields,
including operating systems and process scheduling. In FCFS, the process that arrives first is the one that
gets executed first. This method is straightforward and easy to implement, but it can lead to inefficiencies,
particularly in terms of waiting time and turnaround time.
Characteristics of FCFS:

1. Non-preemptive: Once a process starts executing, it runs to completion without being


interrupted.

2. Fairness: Every process gets a chance to execute in the order of arrival.


3. Simple Implementation: It can be implemented using a queue data structure.

8.SJF-SJF stands for Shortest Job First, which is a scheduling algorithm used in operating systems and

Characteristics of SJF:

1. Non-preemptive: Once a process starts executing, it runs to completion without being

memory is limited.

10.Demand Paging-Demand paging is a memory management scheme that loads pages into memory
only when they are needed, rather than loading all pages of a process at once. This approach is a key
component of virtual memory systems and helps optimize memory usage by reducing the amount of
physical memory required at any given time.
9. Context Switch-A context switch involves saving the state of the currently running process (or
thread) and loading the state of the next process (or thread) to be executed. This process allows the
operating system to manage multiple processes efficiently.

Steps in a Context Switch:

1. Save the State of the Current Process:The operating system saves the current process's
context, which includes the values of CPU registers, program counter, and other relevant
information, into the Process Control Block (PCB) of that process.

2. Update the Process State:The state of the current process is updated to reflect that it is no
longer running (e.g., it may be marked as "waiting" or "ready").

3. Select the Next Process:The operating system selects the next process to run based on the
scheduling algorithm in use (e.g., FCFS, SJF, Priority).

4. Load the State of the Next Process:The operating system retrieves the context of the
selected process from its PCB and loads it into the CPU registers.

5. Update the Process State:The state of the next process is updated to reflect that it is now
running.

6. Transfer Control:The CPU starts executing the next process.

10. System calls-System calls are the programming interface between an application and the
operating system. They provide a way for user-level applications to request services from the operating
system's kernel. System calls are essential for performing various operations that require higher

12. Multilevel feedback queue scheduling-Multilevel feedback queue scheduling is an advanced


CPU scheduling algorithm that enhances the multilevel queue scheduling approach by allowing
processes to move between different queues based on their behavior and requirements. This flexibility
helps optimize CPU utilization and responsiveness, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.

13.File Directories -The collection of files is a file directory. The directory contains information about
the files, including attributes, location, and ownership. Much of this information, especially that is
concerned with storage, is managed by the operating system. The directory is itself a file, accessible by
various file management routines.

15.WHAT IS DEADLOCK? NECESSARY CONDITION OF DEADLOCK?

Ans-A deadlock is a situation in a multiprogramming or multitasking environment where two or more


processes are unable to proceed because each is waiting for the other to release a resource. In other
words, a deadlock occurs when a set of processes are blocked because each process is holding a
resource and waiting for another resource that is held by another process in the set.

Conditions for Deadlock-1.Mutual Exclusion: At least one resource must be held in a non-
shareable mode. That is, only one process can use the resource at any given time. If another process
requests that resource, the requesting process must be delayed until the resource is released.

2.Hold and Wait: A process holding at least one resource is waiting to acquire additional resources
that are currently being held by other processes. This means that processes can hold resources while
waiting for others.

3.No Preemption: Resources cannot be forcibly taken from a process holding them. A resource can
only be released voluntarily by the process holding it after it has completed its task.

4.Circular Wait: There exists a set of processes P1,P2,…,Pn such that P1 is waiting for a resource held
by P2, P2 is waiting for a resource held by P3, and so on, with Pn waiting for a resource held by P1,
forming a circular chain.

16.Banker Algorithm: The Banker’s Algorithm is a resource allocation and deadlock avoidance

requests additional resources and cannot be granted them, it must release its currently held
resources. This can lead to increased overhead and complexity in resource management.

4. Eliminate Circular Wait:Impose a strict ordering of resource types. Each process must request
resources in a predefined order. This prevents circular wait conditions by ensuring that once a
process holds a resource, it can only request resources that come later in the order.

which process to terminate can be based on various criteria, such as:

execute at a particular speed. This means that the algorithm must work regardless of the
relative speeds of the processes involved.

Types of Semaphores

1. Binary Semaphore (Mutex):

 A binary semaphore can take only two values: 0 and 1. It is often used as a mutex
(mutual exclusion) to protect critical sections. When a process wants to enter the critical
section, it attempts to acquire the semaphore:

 If the semaphore value is 1 (available), it is set to 0 (locked), and the process


enters the critical section.

 If the semaphore value is 0 (locked), the process is blocked until the semaphore is
released.

2. Counting Semaphore:

 A counting semaphore can take non-negative integer values and is used to control access
to a resource pool with a limited number of instances. For example, if a resource pool has
5 identical resources, the counting semaphore can be initialized to 5. Processes can
acquire and release the semaphore as they use the resources:

 When a process acquires the semaphore, the value is decremented.

 When a process releases the semaphore, the value is incremented.
