how to install windows 10 on virtualbox with an iso file

what u need before starting:


virtualbox installed on ur pc (get it from virtualbox.org)

windows 10 iso file (grab official from microsoft’s site)

at least 4gb ram and 30gb free disk space recommended

step 1: create a new virtual machine


open virtualbox

click new button

name it “windows 10” or whatever u want

set type to Microsoft Windows

version to Windows 10 (64-bit)

click next

step 2: assign memory (ram)


choose how much ram u wanna give it, minimum 2048mb (2gb) but 4096mb (4gb) is
smoother if u got it

click next

step 3: create a virtual hard disk


select create a virtual hard disk now

click create

choose VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image)

click next

choose dynamically allocated (means file only grows as u use it)

click next

set size, minimum 30gb recommended

click create

step 4: mount the windows 10 iso


back in main virtualbox window, select your vm (windows 10)

click settings > storage

under controller: sata, click the empty disc icon

on right, click the disc icon next to optical drive

choose choose a disk file...

browse to your windows 10 iso and select it

click ok
step 5: start the vm and install windows
select the vm and click start

vm will boot from the iso

follow windows 10 installation prompts (language, license, custom install, pick


virtual hard disk)

wait while windows installs (takes some time)

once done, windows will reboot inside the vm

step 6: install guest additions (optional but recommended)


with vm running, click devices on virtualbox menu

click insert guest additions cd image

inside the vm, open the cd drive and run VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe

follow the installer and reboot vm after

tips
snapshot ur vm before big changes so u can rollback if u mess up

if vm is slow, increase ram or enable virtualization in ur bios

use full screen mode with host + F (host key is usually right ctrl)
