CSS 123 Individual Assignment-1

The document discusses the suitability of simplex communication for a radio station broadcasting weather alerts, highlighting its cost efficiency and reliability, while comparing it to half-duplex and full-duplex modes. For a telemedicine platform, full-duplex communication is recommended due to its ability to facilitate real-time interactions and low latency, essential for video consultations. The document also outlines bandwidth and latency requirements for both communication modes.

1. A local radio station is upgrading its transmission system to broadcast weather alerts to
remote areas. Discuss why simplex communication is suitable for this scenario. Compare its
advantages and limitations with half-duplex and full-duplex modes in terms of cost,
infrastructure, and reliability.

2. A hospital is planning to implement a telemedicine platform for real-time video

consultations between doctors and patients. Suggest which network communication mode
would be more suitable and why. Compare its bandwidth and latency requirements with other
network communication modes
 ANSWERS.

QUESTION ONE.

1. Simplex communication is a unidirectional mode where data travels from a sender to

a receiver without any reverse flow. It is based upon direction of data flow category.
This is akin to one-way street. The receiver cannot send feedback to the sender,
making it a non-interactive mode. It is relevant for application like monitoring system
where one-way data flow is sufficient. Example radio broadcast where a radio station
sends signals to listeners, who cannot respond through the same channel. Simplex
communication is well suited for a radio station broadcasting weather alerts to remote
areas because it is ideal for sending information to many recipients without the need
of feedback.
Why simplex is suitable:
 Simplex communication is ideal for broadcasting weather alerts because it
delivers information in one direction from radio station to listeners without
the need of feedback from the recipients
 This aligns with the nature of weather alerts, which are informal messages
that do not require interaction or acknowledgement from the audience

Advantages of simplex communications

 Cost efficiency: Low infrastructures cost, as it requires only a transmitter at

the station and receivers (radios) at the audience’s end
 Simplicity: Easy to set up and maintain, with minimal technical complexity
 Reliability: High reliability for one way communication as there is no
interruptions or delays caused by feedback mechanism

Limitations of simplex communications.

 No feedback: Listeners cannot confirm whether they received the message

or not
 Limited use: Only suitable for one- way communication scenarios like
broadcasting, not for interactive communication.
Comparison with half duplex and full duplex.

Aspect Simplex Half duplex Full duplex

Meaning One-way transmission Two-way transmission one Two-way
(Directionality) only direction at a time simultaneously or
continuous
Cost Low setup and Moderate cost due to High cost due to
operational cost due to switching or alternation complex systems
minimal infrastructure between nodes of a network
Infrastructure Minimal suitable for Requires moderate Requires advanced
broadcasting infrastructure due to waiting bandwidth and
process compared to full infrastructures due to
duplex feedback mechanisms
Reliability Very high, as there is no Moderate (prone to delays) Moderate, requires
dependency on the less reliable since delays are robust systems as it
feedback allowable may lead to depend on handling
collision continuous data

Conclusion.

In context of broadcasting weather alerts simplex is the best options since the need of
feedback is less critical in this scenario as the focus is on delivering the message to the
recipients only, the simplicity and reliability of the mode increase the efficiency and
effectiveness towards reaching remote areas but also due to its affordability it become
appropriate mode. Large number of populations hinders the possibility of using the method
that involve feedback since one channel cannot be able to manage a number of many
responses at a time hence to this reason this become more recommended approach.
QUESTION TWO

Suggested communication mode: Full-Duplex Communication

2. Full-duplex communication is the mode which allows data to flow in both directions
simultaneously. It enables real-time interaction without delays. Full duplex is the ideal
choice for telemedicine platforms because it supports seamless, uninterrupted
communications, which is essential for video consultations
Why Full-duplex is suitable:
 Real-time communication: Doctors and patients need to interact without
delays or interruptions. The mode ensures both parts can speak and listen
simultaneously, similar to a face-to-face conversation.
 Video and audio synchronization: In telemedicine clear video and audio
are critical for accurate diagnosis. Full duplex minimize latency, ensuring
smooth video streaming and synchronized audio
 Critical situations: During emergencies, immediate feedback is required.
Full duplex communications enable instant responses which can save life.

Bandwidth and latency requirement for Full-duplex

 Bandwidth: Full duplex mode requires a high bandwidth to handle

simultaneous two-way video and audio streams for example Standard
Definition Video 1 Mbps, High Definition (HD) Video requires 2-4
Mbps and 4K Video (If applicable): requires 15-25 Mbps
 Latency: Very low latency (< 150 milliseconds) is critical for real time
video consultations. Higher latency can cause delays in communication,
leading to frustration of miscommunications

Aspect Simplex Half duplex Full duplex

Directionality One-way Two-way but one at Two-way simultaneously
communication time continuous
Low only one Moderate, can High handles simultaneous
Bandwidth stream at a time handle one at a time video or video

Latency No real time Moderate due to Very low (< 150)

interaction switching delays
Conclusion.
According to the scenario given above, the recommended appropriate mode of
communication is full duplex since it contains the required features by a telemedicine
company which enable the enterprise to operate and run its services effectively and efficiently
hence bring more satisfaction toward the demand of patient.
