Background of the study

This project titled smart water dispenser system using Arduino and sensor

Water has become the most important product of human life. There are many

stresses on multiple water resources. And on the other hand, the rapid

increase of population and changing lifestyles has increased the need for

fresh water. As we see in present scenario it would clear that in most of the

areas like households, in Romblon State University - Cajidiocan Campus. are

free far more for more water supply than earlier. Also, if this cost of fetching

water which is almost equivalent. In summer, we face the problem of drinking

water. So is the panic over drinking water supply in the Romblon State

University - Cajidiocan Campus. is a modern approach to the conventional

water dispenser that we use in our daily life? In this system we use a

proximity switch which is connected to a relay which controls the water

solenoid which acts as a valve to control the water flow to the tap. The water

dispensers that we use in our daily life are mechanically operated. The water

flows through the tap when we press the concerned button and the water flow

stops once we release the button. This button system is prone to water loss

and wear and tear of the button and therefore the dispenser requires a

constant maintenance. We can make the dispenser handy and user friendly

by giving it an electronic touch. We can make use of the sensor technology

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The research study focused on designing the Development of Smart

Water Dispenser System using Arduino and Sensor Technology in Romblon

State University - Cajidiocan Campus during AY. 2024-2025. In this projects

Ultrasonic sensor acts as an input device and water pump acts a load or

output device, here we are using relay to control the load and we are using a

LCD display as data monitor unit. Here the automatic process is works by

detecting ultrasonic sensor. Ultrasonic sensor continuously measures the

distance, in our program we need to fix the threshold distance, whenever the

distance limits the threshold distance sensor is detected. So whenever the

sensor distance reaches its threshold limits Arduino send a control signal to

the Relay module to trigger the water pump. That means when the distance

is at threshold limits Relay the ON the water motor and if the distance is

above the threshold limits Relay module OFF the water pump. And also, here

we are creating a fault condition to stop the extra wastage of water by

detecting the water leakage due to any system failure condition the study

covered from A.Y. to 2024 - 2025.

Smart Contactless Automatic Gel Dispenser: Development and

Deployment in Senegal to Tackle Covid19

According to Ibrahima., et.al (2021) The surge of Covid19 cases in

Senegal raises the fear of a high death toll. The limitation of the virus

transmission within the population may prevent that from happening. Frequent

hand sanitization is highly recommended and promoted by the local

authorities. In this paper, the design and deployment of a smart contactless

automatic gel dispenser is presented as an effort to participate in the fight

against the Covid19 by locally providing affordable and effective systems. The

design specifications that guided the technical approach used to develop the

device are explained. A low-cost Arduino based platform is associated with an

ultrasonic sensor to detect hands and automatically deliver gel for sanitization.

Particular care is taken to calibrate the ultrasonic sensor and ensure that

untimely activations of dispenser are avoided. Two versions of packaging are

presented. 3D printing is 1st used but CNC machining is later chosen due to

the need of production time reduction.

development of an Automatic Drinking Water Dispenser using Arduino as the

central control unit. The system addresses water wastage and aims to

promote sustainable water management practices. Equipped with preset

volume options (100ml, 250ml, 500ml), the dispenser enhances efficiency and

user convenience while reducing environmental impact. Additionally, the study

incorporates educational elements, introducing students and users to

embedded systems and sustainability concepts. Results from testing reveal

that the dispenser reduces water wastage by 30% compared to traditional

dispensers. This innovation aligns with Sustainable Development Goals

(SDGs) 6 and 12 (United Nations,2023), promoting clean water access and

Smart Water ATM with Arduino Integration, RFID Authentication, and

Dynamic Dispensing for Enhanced Hydration Practices

According to & Ibraahim, Navas., et.al (2024) This proposal outlines

the development of a comprehensive solution to address hydration

challenges through the creation of a Smart Water ATM with Arduino

integration, RFID authentication, and dynamic dispensing capabilities.

Traditional water dispensers often fall short in monitoring water intake and

promoting optimal hydration practices. In response, our project aims to

revolutionize hydration practices by integrating Arduino Mega and Uno

boards into a Smart Water ATM with a Bottle Dispenser. This innovative

11

Cajidiocan,

system is designed to dispense specific water quantities based on user

preferences, encourage the use of personal water bottles, display water

temperature, and operate independently without the need for a water line

connection. Prior to prototype fabrication, an extensive literature review and

survey were conducted to understand existing water dispenser shortcomings

and gather public perspectives in Singapore. The Smart Water ATM

addresses identified issues by incorporating sensors to monitor water levels,

dispense specific quantities, and measure water temperatures. The prototype

fabrication involves designing a stainless-steel housing, 3D printing the

Smart Water dispenser unit, and installing tanks, tubing, and electronic

components. To enhance user interaction, the Smart Water ATM requires

RFID authentication through Identity Cards, tracking daily water

consumption. An LCD screen displays the dispensed water volume over the

ATM’s lifespan, motivating users to be mindful of their water consumption

and minimize wastage. Adjustments will be made for deployment in public

spaces, such as train stations, where access to permanent water dispensers

is limited. This proposal presents an innovative solution to promote enhanced

hydration practices, encouraging users to adopt mindful water consumption

habits.

make a mechanical device automatic. The use of a dispenser to fill water into

glasses can be done automatically as a substitute for a dispenser for filling

water which is still manual. With the prototype method we can design or

make an Automatic Dispenser using an ultrasonic sensor and Arduino Uno.

This tool uses an Arduino Uno microcontroller as the main controller, an

ultrasonic sensor as input and as a measuring tool when the water is full or

within a specified limit, a relay to deliver power to the water pump which will

flow water from the gallon to the measuring cup provided. The design results

provide convenience to users because it has been automated in terms of

filling and measuring the water that has been determined.

Design Automatic Dispenser for Blind People based on Arduino Mega

using DS18B20 Temperature Sensor

According to Nur Fathoni., et.al (2022) People with visual disabilities,

who have limited vision, will experience many obstacles in carrying out

activities and social interaction. Equipment, in general, is not still user friendly

for blind people. The purpose of this study was to create an automatic

dispenser design that provides convenience and safety for visually impaired

people when taking hot water to the dispenser. This study uses Arduino

Mega microcontroller as the main control, proximity sensor to detect the

presence of glass, and the HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor as a determinant of

highwater levels and an SD Card Module to play sound. This research uses

the Research and Development (RnD) method. The results of this study are

an automatic dispenser that can fill glasses automatically with a glass height

of 8 cm, 10 cm, and 12 cm. This dispenser can automatically tell blind people

when the glass is full and turn off the tap when the water reaches 1-2 cm

from the surface of the glass so that the water in the glass does not spill.

Based on the test results, this automatic dispenser can detect glass of any

color and make it from melamine, plastic ceramic, iron. However, this

automatic dispenser cannot detect glass made of glass and transparent

colored glass. When going to use hot water, blind people can choose a

temperature with a setpoint of 50 o C, 70 o C, 80 o C. The results of testing

the tool using hot water show that the temperature of the water in the glass

has a difference of 1°C-3° C with a setpoint.

Automatic Water Dispenser Based on Hand Gesture Detection Using

Arduino

According to Alharis Ramadhani., et.al (2022) Water dispensers are

electronic devices that are widely available in households and offices. In

general, water dispensers use faucets to drain water. During the pandemic,

many people avoid touching equipment used by many people. Various ways

have been done so that the water dispenser can be operated automatically

without touching the faucet. Previous research on water dispensers was only

applied to one type of water. This study aims to make an automatic water

dispenser without touching the faucet used for two types of water, namely hot

water or cold water. This research is based on hand gesture detection to

choose hot water or cold water. The APDS-9960 gesture sensor detects

hand movements to select hot or cold water, and then a servo motor is used

to open the water faucet. After that, the position of the glass is validated by

the ultrasonic sensor HC-SR04, and water will flow for 30 seconds into the

glass. The entire input and output process is controlled using Arduino. The

results show that this automatic water dispenser can detect hand gestures at

a maximum distance of 15 cm with a hand movement speed of 2 to 3.7

seconds. This automatic water dispenser can detect three kinds of glass,

namely ceramic, clear glass, and plastic, at a distance of 1 to 3 cm, and the

volume of water flowing for 30 seconds is 240 ml.

Smart Water Dispenser

According to Gunasinghe., et.al (2019) The rapid growth of the

Internet of Things (IoT) changes human life into a smart world. Physical

objects connected with smart sensors provide data to make people's life

easier. We present a case study of the smart water dispenser is with the aid

of a weight sensor, temperature sensor, and raspberry is built to assists the

users and the water bottle suppliers by tracking the amount of water used in

day-to-day activity. The smart water dispenser measures the weight of the

available water in the dispenser and pops an alert when the water in the

dispenser is about to finish. It measures the temperature and pushes

notifications to the user about water consumption.

assessment are time-consuming and require laboratory testing, making real-

time monitoring challenging. This project proposes an Arduino-based water

quality monitoring system that provides a cost-effective and efficient solution

for real time data collection and analysis. The system utilizes multiple

sensors to measure key parameters such as pH level, turbidity, temperature,

dissolved oxygen, and conductivity. These sensors are interfaced with an

Arduino microcontroller, which processes the collected data and transmits it

to a display

module or a cloud-based server for remote monitoring. The real-time data

acquisition enables users to take immediate corrective actions when water

quality deviates from acceptable standards. The proposed system is ideal for

applications in rural and urban water supply systems, aquaculture, and

environmental monitoring. Its low cost, ease of deployment, and real-time

functionality make it a promising alternative to traditional water quality testing

methods. Future enhancements can include IoT integration for remote

monitoring and AI-based analytics for predictive water quality assessment.

or by touch. The only way to stop the transmission is to use a mask on the

face and washing or sanitizing hands frequently. Sanitizers are liquid, gel, or

foam which is designed to eliminate germs on skin or any other object. In

daily lives also sanitization is necessary to prevent various germs which can

make you ill. One of the main modes of contact with germs is our hands

because in our daily lives we touch many infected surfaces and objects

unknowingly hence to prevent any type of illness due to those germs, hand

sanitization is necessary, especially for a person working in a closed and

congested environment like offices, canteens, restaurants, schools, etc. This

paper aims to design a low-cost Arduino-based automatic sanitizer

dispenser-controlled door and it will be of great help in public places where

people don’t follow hand hygiene properly. This automatic sanitizer system

will be placed at the entry point of the main gate and it will only allow entry

from that gate if and only if the person goes through the sanitization process

first. Keywords COVID19 Sanitizer Microcontroller IR sensor Ultrasonic

Touch-free tissue dispensing device

According to Zaki, Nurul., et.al (2023) In this paper, an innovative

solution for the everyday issue of tissue dispensing is presented. With billions

of tissues distributed daily, the current dispensers often face challenges, as

revealed in studies of frequently damaged units. The primary objective was to

enhance this fundamental item, aiming to simplify users’ lives. The key

innovation lies in granting users control over the tissue dispenser’s rolling

mechanism. Introducing the Arduino UNO microcontroller-powered smart

tissue dispenser. Operated by a stepper motor, the dispenser reacts to the

user’s needs. Activation occurs when the infrared sensor detects hands,

prompting the motor to release the appropriate amount of tissue. It’s like

witnessing magic, yet it’s simply the ingenuity of technology at play. The

software for the Arduino UNO, serving as the project’s controller, is compiled,

and uploaded using the Arduino IDE. The performance of this automatic

tissue dispenser indicates success in addressing common issues and

facilitating effortless tissue retrieval.

Automatic Pill Dispenser for Pharmacy

According to Aung, Myo Min., et.al (2023) Medication plays an

essential role in people's daily lives. Individuals often experience headaches,

pains, upset stomach, fever, and common colds, among other ailments.

Factors such as long working hours, limited relaxation, extreme weather

changes, and irregular sleeping and eating patterns can contribute to illness

and disease. Medications are necessary to alleviate symptoms or even

prevent them. Additionally, many people take vitamins and mineral

supplements to meet their nutritional needs when their diets fall short.

Typically, over-the-counter (OTC) medicines and vitamin supplements can be

readily purchased at pharmacies without needing a doctor's prescription.

Automatic Pill Dispensers for Pharmacies have been designed and built

specifically to streamline the process of dispensing these OTC medications

and supplements. Pharmacies often face long queues, and automatic pill

dispensers offer a time-saving solution by quickly dispensing medicines and

supplements, much like a typical vending machine. The prototype hardware

was designed using cost-effective materials and components, with a

particular focus on the dispensing mechanism. Control is facilitated through

an Arduino Mega microcontroller, and payment can be made through a coin

validator/acceptor, simplifying the purchasing process for both pharmacists

and customers. A notable advantage of this system is its modular design,

allowing for the replacement of custom-designed dispensing discs to

accommodate different types of pills. Experimental results were obtained by

conducting tests on various aspects, including servo motor performance,

dispensing accuracy, serial vs. parallel processing, and the comparison

between manual dispensing and an automatic dispensing system. The

automatic pill dispenser not only extends the service hours of the pharmacy

by serving as a self-access kiosk but also achieves performance comparable

to existing research in the field.

According to N, Rohan., et.al (2023) Coffee is one of the favorite

drinks. He way of making coffee is brewing and using a machine, this paper

proposes the design of Automatic Dispenser machine. The main objective of

our project is to launch new technology application in society. This is Arduino

based Dispenser machine that sales of coffee from machine. This paper

attempt to provide solution on coin-based Dispenser machine which is not

returning the money. This paper attempt to provide solution on based

Dispenser machine which is helps to coffee users. Most people are loves to

drink coffee/tea which is made by an ordinary coffee shop or coffee maker

machine. Also, the coffee trade exceeds US $ 10 Billion worldwide. The

development of new modern hardware and software systems allows us to

build an excellent coffee maker machine that satisfies customer needs. The

Vending Machine is which delivers different products based on what the

customer likes to drink. This kind of machine placed in shops, offices,

institutes and various places where it required. It provides a wide variety of

products in an automated process, without any manpower and easy to save

precious time of humans in a fast-moving world. This paper compares

different features like space, size, and time to prepare the drink and how fast

it works. The power dissipation of a vending machine is one of the major

problems faced by the users. And the availability of the product is known only

in some places not every. This is an automated product to create our day-to-

Touch-Free Automatic Alcohol-Based Hand Rub Dispensers in Healthcare

Settings: A Simulation Study of Dispenser Energy Impact on Hand Hygiene
Disruption

According to Chen, Nanshan, et.al (2023) Background Hand hygiene

(HH) matters because it decreases pathogen transmission that can cause

infection. Automatic alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR) dispensers are widely

adopted in healthcare facilities as the preferred means of HH. Traditional

automatic dispensers have a large supply of batteries in the dispenser

housing, whereas energy-on-the-refill (EOR) is a newer power supply

solution, consisting of a relatively small battery attached to a refill bottle. The

objective of this study was to assess dispenser design impact on missed HH

opportunities and facility workflow disruption by mitigating battery

maintenance. Methods We used date-driven discrete event simulation to

evaluate the performance of three leading types of automatic dispensers in

four common types of hospitals (Table 1). We analyzed up to 8 years of

historical usage data and identified the usage pattern, which are used as the

input traffic for our simulation model. Dispenser energy performance

parameters were inputs to measure the workflow disruption of the different

types of dispensers over a 6-year period in terms of battery replacements,

duration of downtime, and the number of missed HH opportunities. Table 1:

Summary of facility information and dispense event details to inform

modeling. 1. This total included soap dispensers used for hand washing and

25

ABHR dispensers that were not equipped with automated monitoring (e.g.,

those provided in office areas without patients). 2. These were the dispensers

used in the analysis and modeling results. 3. Total dispenses for all ABHR

dispensers during the entire time range. 4. This is the average number of

ABHR dispenses daily for the facility for all dispensers.

Results The simulation results suggested that dispensers with EOR

technology were free of battery failures over the entire 6 years, and thus 0

HH misses were incurred due to dead batteries (Figure 1). All other designs

had a significant amount HH misses due to battery failures, ranging from

2,514 (± 547) to 40,522 (± 4,506) per facility. However, the majority of HH

misses were caused by empty ABHR refills. The maximum number of battery

change events was 802 (± 0.60). Figure 1: Modeling results for each hospital

and all dispenser types1 over the 6-year period simulation for the ABHR

dispensers that comprise 80% of usage based on prior data. This figure

displays (a) total dispenser downtime in hours, (b) the total number of HH

misses due to battery failures, (c) the total number of HH misses due to

ABHR availability (assuming 12 hours between an empty refill being

replaced), and (d) the total number of battery change-out events. 95% CIs

were also illustrated but might be unnoticeable, as they are on a much

smaller scale compared to the mean. 1. Dispenser A is a traditional design

with 4 “D” cell batteries in the housing and has an average dispense energy

of 2.02 J/ml.

Cajidiocan,

According to Mohanavel, Vinayagam., et.al (2023) An automatic and

lightweight refilling water dispenser is the proposed invention using a plurality

of such bottles in a backup of the main top-loading water bottle which is

located inverted to the top of water dispenser loading. This automatic refilling

water dispenser is very much useful at various areas especially in large scale

and small-scale industries, companies etc. When the inverted bottle of the

station housing becomes empty, it can be lifted out of the station housing and

replaced with a full bottle with the sealing cap removed with manpower. The

proposed invention eliminates the intervention of human being and thus

automates the entire process efficiently and automatically.

FEA: Automatic air freshener dispenser

According to Hazwan., et.al (2021) This research focused on the

redesign the main body of automatic air freshener dispenser. Automatic air

freshener dispenser used for spraying fragrance automatically according to

the setting provided. This type of air freshener no need to spray manually,

labor saving and more convenient. This automatically air freshener dispenser

will automatically spray the fragrance into the whole room space to purify air

and remove smelly odor. Other than that, the objectives of this mini project

are to redesign the main body of the automatic air freshener dispenser. The

design of the automatic air freshener dispenser is using CAD software which

is CATIA and then transfer to Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to analyses the

capabilities of part design. At the end of this paper, this research will give

understanding about design using CATIA Software and do analysis that

Synthesis
Based on the study of the other authors, their device has the

similarity to this study in terms of the use of utilization of Smart

Water Dispenser System using Arduino and Sensor Technology, we can

integrate this machine to the existing water dispenser and thereby we can

eliminate the water spillage and this technique is far more hygienic as it

eliminates the touch from the process. This method can be implemented in

the public water podium stands which are maintained by the government.

The automatic water dispenser can be made using sensors.

Definition of Terms

Arduino IDE. It provides a user-friendly interface with features such as a

code editor, compiler, uploader, and serial monitor, enabling users to write

and deploy programs for Arduino-based projects efficiently.

Arduino Uno. a device that automatically dispenses water when a container

is placed under the dispenser, using an Arduino Uno microcontroller to read data

from a sensor (like an ultrasonic sensor) that detects the presence of the

container, and then activates a solenoid valve to control the water flow.

Battery. On-site batteries can charge and discharge using direct current

(DC) and connect to the grid through a large inverter. They can then charge

from the grid at times when cost lower, store the power, and release it when

demand is higher (a practice known as peak shaving).

Chassis. The chassis of trash collector robot serves as structural

foundation, providing support and housing for the robot’s components.

IR Sensor. a system where an infrared (IR) sensor, connected to an

Arduino microcontroller, detects the presence of a container (like a glass)

near the dispenser, triggering the automatic dispensing of water without any

manual interaction, essentially allowing for a touchless water dispensing

experience.

PROJECT DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT

Process System Development Life Cycle (SDLC)

Agile SDLC is a hybrid of iterative and incremental process models

emphasizing process adaptation and customer satisfaction through rapid

delivery of functional devices. Agile methodologies divide the product

development process into small incremental builds. Iterations of these builds

are available. Each repetition lasts around one to three weeks.

Every iteration involves cross-functional teams working simultaneously on

various areas:

● Planning
● Analysis
● Design
● Development
● Testing
● Deployment

Planning

Planning was the most crucial phase in Water Dispenser System using

Arduino development. The existing system's problem was identified during

planning to comprehend how the current system operated. During this step,

the researchers gathered all the materials to design water dispenser can be

operated without touching using Arduino uno.

Analysis

In this phase, the following requirements were identified: the system’s

functionality, system content, hardware requirements, and user

requirements, which were the basis for the gathered data in the planning

stage. Additionally, those requirements were the foundation of the design

phase of the study.

Design

In this phase, the Sensor systems can be designed to streamline the

waste collection and management process, making it more efficient, cost-

effective, and environmentally friendly.

Figure 3.4 Proposed Hardware Design

Development

In this stage, the gathered material was subject to installation, such

as connecting the battery to the charger controller and then to the water

pump and Water Flow Sensor of the Arduino Uno and 4x4 selector key.

Testing

The initial level of prototype testing was unit testing. It is generally

undertaken by the researchers and the system's user to guarantee that the

device will work appropriately. Identifying mistakes due to unexpected

interactions between sub-module and system components to determine

whether the prototype satisfies functional and non-functional requirements.

Deployment

The designed sensor has been examined and tested to be functional

and operational. It is now ready for evaluation by (99) respondents from

BSIT all third-year students of Romblon State University - Cajidiocan

Campus.

A working product will be displayed at the office of IT Department

Chairperson at the end of the iteration.

While planning and analysis in an agile model are not as extensive as

in a traditional model, they are sufficient to establish the extent of required

modifications. Following scope definition, the project team often cycles

through analysis, design, programming, and testing, enabling the delivery of

minor changes to production.

In Figure 3.5, the user will operate the device in a Sensor and water

pump; The circuit contains Arduino Nano Board, Water Flow Sensor, Relay

Module, Water Pump, and LCD Display. The YF-S201 Water Flow Sensor is

used to measure water flow during filling. The relay is the intermediate

component between the Arduino board and the 5V DC water pump. It allows

the Arduino board to control the water pump. Similarly, the 4×4 Matrix

Keypad is used to input the quantity of Water that is to be dispersed. The

LCD displays the flow Rate and Total Volume of water. The LCD Display,

Relay, Water Pump, and Water flow sensor is powered via a 5V from 7805

Voltage regulator IC. A DC barrel Jack is available where you can supply 9V

using a 9V DC Adapter. In the circuit diagram, we connect the Relay input pin

to D3 of Arduino and the Water Flow Sensor input pin to D2 of Arduino. The

5V DC pump is connected to the output of the 5V single-channel Relay

Module. One end of the Water flow sensor takes water as input from the

motor and gives output as water from the external end.
