Question 1 (20 marks)

Memory is an important component in all embedded systems.

a) Explain the broad categories of memory (6 marks)


b) Site significant characteristic of the following RAM types: SD RAM, DDR2, DDR3 and
DDR4 (8 marks)
c) Estimate memory sizes for the following devices and site an operating system appropriate
for each.
i. Arduino UNO (3 marks)
ii. Raspberry PI Model 4B (3 marks)

Question 2 (20 marks)

An embedded is a specialized computer for performing particular or limited tasks. It contains


several components from hardware and software, which interact within and without the system via
communication interfaces.

a) Propose 5 hardware and 3 software than can be part of such system (8 marks)
b) Externally, the embedded system can communicate via several interfaces, name 4. (4
marks)
c) Sketch a typical embedded system, which includes the components in (a) and (b) above
(8 marks)

Question 3 (20 marks)

An embedded system like any computing device, accepts input, processes and produces output.
Typically, real time operating systems run on such devices.
a) Outline 3 benefits of using RTOS (3 marks)
b) Site 5 characteristics which an embedded system doesn’t depend on, but can affect its
viability. (5 marks)
c) What are 5 ways through which an embedded system can provide output, siting appropriate
examples of systems using the method. (10 marks)
d) Propose 2 RTOS for an embedded system (2 marks)

Question 4 (10 marks)


Design an embedded system that can be used in our localities. The proposed design should be
workable and useful. Design should include:
- Hardware
- Software
- Procedural functionality
- sketch
