Getting Started
Getting Started
1. Go to Start >>>> Programs >>>> Tavultesoft Keyman >>>> click on Keyman. This action will
place the keyman icon on the system tray on the right hand side of your task bar where the system clock is
shown.
2. Open any word processing program (tested on Microsoft word and Microsoft WordPad 1) and change
the font to "Geez Unicode".
3. Before you start typing make sure that the Keyman Keyboard is set to "ግ 2 Geez Unicode", this will
be denoted by "ግ" on the system tray, and set the Keyboard layout/IME 3 to "US" or "Geez Unicode". To
change to Geez you can left click on the "Tavultesoft Keyman 6.0" icon on the system tray or use
shortcut keys "Ctrl + Alt + G". To revert to English you can configure optional shortcut keys such as "Ctrl
+ Alt + E" by right clicking on the "Tavultesoft Keyman 6.0" icon on the system tray and clicking on
"Keyman configuration" and "options" respectively.
The Geez visual keyboard can be started by right clicking on the “Tavultesoft Keyman 6.0” or the “Geez
Unicode”, depending on the status of the icon on the system tray, and selecting the “Visual Keyboard”.
For the visual keyboard to show Geez alphabets you will need to make sure that:
Place the cursor on the word processing document, in a ready-to-type status and select the " ግ”
“Geez Unicode” on the right hand side of the system tray.
Click on the Shift button on the visual Geez keyboard to show more alphabets. The Geez visual keyboard
is non-intrusive and can be kept on the screen while typing or can be moved around. The key stokes on
the visual keyboard are active and can be used to see the location of most Geez alphabets or type the
Geez alphabets by directly clicking on the corresponding Geez alphabets on the visual keyboard using
the mouse.
At first sight, the Geez alphabets on the visual keyboard may look randomly scattered. However, on
closer examination with the help of the Geez Keyboard Layout Guide provided, one can quickly find out
that the keyboard layout is actually structured in a manner that is easy to use and remember. Some Geez
alphabets can be generated in more than one way. This is in addition to the structured method. Take for
example “e”, “u”, “o” these letters can generate ኢ፣ዩ፣ኦ respectively and letters “E”, “O” generate ዒ፣ዖ

In Windows 98 and 95, you can recover documents saved as Rich text format [rtf] in WordPad. But, Documents
saved in any other format may not be recoverable.
2
N.B. If this Geez character is not shown correctly ", select the whole document and change the font into "Geez
Unicode"

Some Geez characters may not work unless the Keyboard layout/IME is set to "US" or "Geez Unicode"

your keyboard by right-clicking on the geez icon (at any status) and selecting (left clicking ) keyman configuration

respectively. For more information please refer to the Geez layout guide. "Geez Keyboard Layout
Guide" can be found by clicking "Start" pointing to "programs" and navigating to "Geez
Unicode".
Limitations
When using Word with Win98, if Word is not started and the user opens a document directly by
association (by clicking on the document entry or icon in an Explorer window), Wordlink is not able to
intercept and translate the incoming characters. This is a limitation with the way Word processes events,
and probably cannot be avoided.
The simplest solution is to always start Word normally (thus loading and initializing the Wordlink Add-In)
before opening any documents by association.
If Unicode is to be used extensively, it is worth upgrading to Windows 2000 or XP, since many more
applications can support Unicode correctly on these platforms.
The Unicode input will only work in document windows. It will not work in any dialog boxes, such as
find or replace. If you need to do this, type the text you wish to find into a new document, copy it to the
clipboard, and paste this into the dialog box.
