Tutorial 3

1. A damped spring–mass system with values of c = 100 kg/s, m = 100 kg, and k =
910 N/m, is subject to a force of 10 cos (3t) N. The system is also subject to initial
conditions: xo = 1 mm and vo = 20 mm/s.

Compute the total response, x(t), of the system.

Question 2
Question 2 Rotating
An electric motor of mass M, mounted on an elastic foundation, is found to vibrate with a deflection of 0.15 m at resonance.
It is known that the unbalanced mass of the motor is 8% of the mass of the rotor due to manufacturing tolerances used, and
the damping ratio of the foundation is ζ = 0.025. Determine the following:
a) The eccentricity or radial location of the unbalanced mass (e),
b) The peak deflection of the motor when the frequency ratio varies from resonance, and
c) The additional mass to be added uniformly to the motor if the deflection of the motor at resonance is to be reduced
to 0.1 m. Assume that the eccentric mass remains unaltered when the additional mass is added to the motor.
Q6. (Assignment)
A uniform bar of mass m is pivoted at point O and supported at the ends by two
springs, as shown below. End P of spring PQ is subjected to a sinusoidal
displacement, x(t)=xo sin ωt.
a) Derive the equation of motion of the system and identify the equivalent
parameters: Jeq, Cteq, Kteq and Mo (the equivalent applied external moment)
b) Determine the natural frequency of the system.
c) Find the steady-state angular displacement of the bar.

Given Values: l=1m, k=1000N/m, c=500 N-s/m, m=10 kg, xo=1cm, and ω=10
rad/s.
Q7. (Assignment) Base Excitation
A 1-DoF and simplified model of a motor vehicle traveling over a rough road with a horizontal speed v, is shown below.
The road contour is approximated by a sinusoid with a peak to peak distance of 0.5m. The mass of the vehicle is 1100 kg,
the stiffness of its suspension system is 1x107 N/m and a damping ratio of 0.3.
A. Mathematically model the unevenness of the road using appropriate sinusoidal expression.
B. Determine the maximum displacement and acceleration of the vehicle traveling at v = 60 km/hr.
C. Determine the minimum cruising speed of the vehicle so that the displacement of the vehicle body will not
be greater than 15mm.
Q8. (Assignment) (Rotating)
Q1 Derive the equation of motion and find the steady-state solution
of the system shown in Fig. below for rotational motion about the
hinge O for the following data: k = 5000N/m l= 1 m, m = 10 kg, M =
50 kg, 𝜔 = 1000 rpm, Fo= 500N
Q3. Base Excitation
A precision grinding machine is supported on an isolator that has an equivalent stiffness of 1
MN/m and viscous damping constant of 1 KN-s/m. The floor on which the machine is mounted is
subjected to a harmonic disturbance due to the operation of an unbalanced engine near the grinding
machine.
a) Define the equation of motion and determine the response.
b) Find the maximum acceptable displacement amplitude of the floor if the resulting amplitude
of vibration of the grinding wheel is to be restricted to 10−6 m.
Assume that the grinding machine and the wheel are a rigid body of weight 450 kg.
