PIR Vs IR Sensor Comparison

The document compares IR sensors and PIR sensors, detailing their types, working principles, and applications. IR sensors detect infrared radiation and can be active or passive, while PIR sensors specifically detect motion from warm objects. Key differences include their range, accuracy, and output types, with PIR sensors commonly used in security and automation, and IR sensors in robotics and proximity detection.

PIR vs IR Sensor

1. IR Sensor (Infrared Sensor)

An IR sensor detects infrared radiation (heat) from objects in its surroundings. It can be active (with

emitter and receiver) or passive.

Types:

- Active IR Sensor: Emits and detects reflected IR light.

- Passive IR Sensor: Detects IR radiation without emitting.

Working Principle:

- Emits infrared light.

- Measures reflected light to detect objects or distance.

Applications:

- Obstacle detection in robots

- Line-following robots

- Proximity detection

- Fire detection

2. PIR Sensor (Passive Infrared Sensor)

A PIR sensor is a specific type of passive IR sensor that detects motion by sensing changes in

infrared radiation emitted by warm objects like humans and animals.

Working Principle:

- Has two slots made of pyroelectric sensors.

- Detects difference in infrared energy when a warm object moves.

- Outputs a digital signal (HIGH/LOW).

Applications:

- Motion-activated lighting

- Security systems

- Automatic doors

- Room occupancy detection

Comparison: PIR vs IR Sensor

| Feature | PIR Sensor | IR Sensor |

|-----------------|----------------------------------|-----------------------------------|

| Full Form | Passive Infrared Sensor | Infrared Sensor |

| Working | Detects motion via heat change | Detects object via IR reflection |

| Active/Passive | Passive | Can be active or passive |

| Range | 3 to 7 meters | 2 to 30 cm |

| Accuracy | Detects living beings | Detects any nearby object |

| Output | Digital (High/Low) | Digital or Analog |

| Applications | Security, automation | Robotics, proximity, fire alarms |
