Personal Essay - A personal essay is

an autobiographical essay that relates a
significant personal experience of the
essay writer.

An autobiography is a nonfiction book

written by a person about their own life.
The word comes from the Greek words
auto ("self"), bios ("life"), and graphein
("to write").
Key Characteristics of a Personal
Essay:

● Narrative and Reflective in

Nature – A personal essay tells a
story about the author’s personal
experiences while also providing
insights and reflections. It often
describes events in a chronological
manner but focuses on the
emotions and realizations
associated with those events.

● Focuses on Personal
Experiences and Insights – The
essay is centered on a specific
event, memory, or experience that
had a significant impact on the
writer’s life. It explores the lessons
learned and the personal growth
that came from that experience.

● Uses the First-Person Point of

View – Personal essays are written
in the first-person perspective ("I"
or "me"), allowing the writer to
connect with the audience on a
personal level and create a sense
of authenticity.

The teacher provides an example of a

personal essay crafted by Mazior Nyanyo,
entitled “Embracing Change: A Journey
Towards Personal Growth and Success.”

Embracing Change: A Journey

Towards Personal Growth and
Success
By: Mazior Nyanyo
Change is a constant companion on
the road of life, guiding us through
uncharted territories and presenting
opportunities for growth and
self-discovery. As I stand here today,
reflecting upon my own journey, I am
reminded of the profound impact that
embracing change has had on my
personal growth and ultimate
success. In this article, I will share
my experiences and lessons learned,
demonstrating how a willingness to
adapt and evolve has been
instrumental in shaping my path to
fulfillment.
Throughout my life, I have
encountered numerous instances
where change has knocked on my
door, demanding my attention.
Initially, I found myself resistant to
these unexpected twists and turns,
desperately clinging to the familiar
and predictable. However, as time
went on, I realized that change was
not my adversary but rather my ally
in progress.
When faced with the unknown, I
made a conscious decision to step out
of my comfort zone and embrace the
opportunities that change presented.
This mindset shift allowed me to
cultivate resilience, adaptability, and
a hunger for growth. Instead of
fearing change, I began to see it as a
gateway to new experiences and fresh
perspectives.
Change often manifests itself in the
form of challenges, which test our
mettle and push us beyond our
perceived limits. I have faced my fair
share of obstacles, each one serving
as a catalyst for personal
development.
One particular instance comes to
mind: a career transition. Leaving the
familiar behind, I ventured into a new
industry. At first, doubts and
insecurities clouded my judgment,
but I quickly realized that change was
an invitation to reinvent myself and
explore uncharted professional
territories. I took every setback as an
opportunity to learn and improve,
adapting my skills and knowledge to
fit the demands of my new
environment. This resilience not only
helped me succeed in my new career
but also instilled a profound sense of
confidence and self-belief.
Failure, though often seen as a
deterrent, is a valuable teacher on the
path of personal growth. Change
brings with it the possibility of failure,
but by reframing failure as a stepping
stone rather than an endpoint, I have
been able to extract invaluable
lessons from my missteps.
On my journey, I encountered a
major setback that left me feeling
disheartened and uncertain about my
future. However, instead of allowing
the failure to define me, I chose to
view it as an opportunity for
introspection and growth. Through
self-reflection, I identified the areas
where I had fallen short and
developed a plan to improve. This
process of self-analysis and
continuous learning not only helped
me bounce back but also equipped
me with the resilience needed to face
future challenges head-on.
Change, with all its uncertainty and
discomfort, has been my faithful
companion on the journey of personal
growth and success. By embracing
change as an opportunity, tackling
challenges head-on, and learning
from failure, I have been able to
transform my life in ways I never
thought possible.
I encourage you to embrace change in
your own life. Embrace the unknown,
for it holds the key to self-discovery
and a life enriched by new
experiences. Embrace challenges, for
they have the power to shape you into
the person you aspire to be. And most
importantly, embrace failure, for
within its lessons lie the seeds of
future success.
Remember, change is not to be feared
but rather celebrated, for it is
through change that we uncover our
true potential and create a life that is
both fulfilling and meaningful. So, let
us embark on this journey together,
hand in hand with change, and watch
as our lives unfold in ways we could
never have imagined.
Acknowledging the uncertainties that
lie ahead, I understand that
embracing change is easier said than
done. It requires a shift in mindset
and a willingness to step into the
unknown. However, I assure you that
the rewards far outweigh the initial
discomfort.
To begin your own journey of
personal growth, start by examining
your current circumstances and
identifying areas where change may
be necessary. Is there a career path
you’ve been hesitant to pursue? Are
there relationships that no longer
serve your well-being? Is there a skill
you’ve been longing to develop?
Recognizing these areas of potential
change is the first step toward
transformation.
Once you have identified the areas for
growth, take small but intentional
steps toward implementing change.
Break down your goals into
manageable tasks and tackle them
one at a time. Remember, change
does not happen overnight. It is a
gradual process that requires
dedication and perseverance.
Celebrate the small victories along the
way and use them as fuel to propel
yourself forward.
Surround yourself with a supportive
network of individuals who believe in
your potential and are willing to walk
alongside you on this journey. Seek
out mentors who have experienced
similar changes and learn from their
wisdom. Share your aspirations with
friends and family, who will provide
encouragement and hold you
accountable.
As you navigate through change, it is
important to maintain a mindset of
curiosity and openness. Embrace the
learning opportunities that arise from
unfamiliar situations. Be willing to
challenge your existing beliefs and
perspectives. It is in these moments
of growth and expansion that you will
truly discover your untapped
potential.
Lastly, be kind to yourself throughout
the process. Understand that
setbacks and obstacles are inevitable.
Instead of viewing them as failures,
see them as opportunities for growth,
learning, and self-reflection. Treat
yourself with compassion and
resilience, knowing that every step
you take is a valuable lesson in your
personal evolution.
In conclusion, embracing change is
not merely a one-time decision but an
ongoing commitment to personal
growth and self-improvement. By
stepping outside of your comfort
zone, facing challenges head-on, and
embracing the lessons that failure
brings, you will embark on a
transformative journey that leads to a
life filled with fulfillment and success.
So, I urge you to embrace change as
your greatest ally and let it guide you
toward the extraordinary life that
awaits you. Embrace the challenges,
the uncertainties, and the discomfort,
for it is through these experiences
that you will truly uncover the
boundless potential that lies within
you. Embrace change, and watch as
you become the architect of your own
destiny.

D. DISCUSSION

The teacher presents the definition of a The students listen to

personal essay to his students. the discussion.

The personal essay is a piece of

nonfiction writing that shares an
interesting, thought-provoking,
entertaining, and/or humorous story for
readers that is drawn from the writer's
personal experiences (even if it's
second-hand information). Also called a
narrative essay, the personal essay is
different from the other essays because it
shares a story.

But make no mistake, the story in a

personal essay should be nonfiction. That
is, your personal essay should be true.
Otherwise, it would be a fictional short
story.

In a personal essay, you are firmly in the

moment in which you are writing. At the
same time, your thoughts, feelings, and
preoccupations in the present lead you to
memories.

Examples:
● I may be thinking about how good
this cake I am eating is, and
remember how my grandmother
used to bake cakes just like this
when she was still strong and able.

● I may return to a childhood haunt

with my classmates and recall the
stories of the same place from my
father, who used to visit the place
with his classmates.

A personal essay is a type of

autobiographical writing where the author
shares a meaningful personal experience.

The main goal of a personal essay is to

reveal aspects of the author's life and
personality through storytelling. By
recounting a pivotal event or experience,
the writer aims to connect with the reader
and convey a deeper understanding of
who they are.

Personal essays vary widely in content

and style, reflecting the diversity of human
experiences. They can explore a range of
topics, from reflections on personal
growth to poignant moments of
realization. What distinguishes a personal
essay is its emphasis on the author's
subjective perspective and the
significance of the story being told.
In a personal essay, the content revolves
around sharing a significant personal
experience that has had a profound
impact on the writer's life.

while the teacher discusses the
breakdown of what to consider when
writing a personal essay.

Here's a breakdown of what to consider The students are

when writing a personal essay: constantly listening to
the discussion.
● Choose a Compelling Topic:
Select an experience or event that
is meaningful and memorable. This
could be a moment of personal
growth, a challenge overcome, a
cultural experience, or a significant
relationship.

● Craft a Narrative: Create a

personal essay structure like a
story, with a clear beginning,
middle, and end. Introduce the
situation or event, develop the
narrative with details and
reflections, and conclude with
insights gained or lessons learned.

● Reflect and Analyze: Beyond

recounting the events, reflect on
why this experience is significant to
you. What did you learn about
yourself or others? How did this
experience shape your beliefs,
values, or future goals?

● Be Honest and Authentic:

Personal essays thrive on
authenticity. Write openly about
your thoughts, feelings, and
reactions to the experience. Avoid
exaggeration or embellishment;
instead, focus on conveying
genuine emotions and insights.

● Showcase Your Voice: Personal

essays are an opportunity to
showcase your unique perspective
and voice. Use descriptive
language, anecdotes, and personal
observations to engage the reader
and convey the impact of the
experience on your life.

● Consider the Audience: Whether

you're writing for a class
assignment, college application, or
job application, consider the
expectations and interests of your
audience. Tailor your essay to
resonate with them while staying
true to your own story.

● Edit and Revise: After drafting

your essay, revise it for clarity,
coherence, and impact. Check for
grammar and punctuation errors,
and ensure that your essay flows
smoothly from start to finish.

Personal Essay as Monologue

A personal essay as a monologue is a

form of reflective writing where the author
directly expresses their thoughts,
emotions, and experiences as if speaking
aloud to an audience or themselves. It
combines storytelling and introspection,
much like a dramatic or inner monologue
in literature or theater.

Key Features of a Personal Essay

as a Monologue:

1. First-Person Perspective – The

writer speaks from their own
viewpoint, using "I" statements to
share personal experiences and
reflections.

2. Conversational Tone – It often

feels like a direct conversation with
the reader, as if the writer is
thinking aloud or speaking to an
imagined audience.

3. Emotional Depth – The

monologue reveals personal
struggles, triumphs, doubts, and
realizations, allowing the reader to
connect emotionally.
4. Uninterrupted Flow of Thoughts
– Unlike traditional essays with
formal structure, a monologue-style
personal essay may flow more
naturally, mimicking the
spontaneity of spoken language.

5. Self-Exploration and Reflection –

The author delves deep into their
emotions and past experiences,
questioning, analyzing, and making
sense of their journey.

The teacher explains the parts of a

personal essay to the class.

Parts of a Personal Essay:

Introduction: Captures the reader’s

attention and sets the tone for the essay.
It often includes a hook, a brief
background, and the main idea.

Body: This contains the main content,

detailing personal experiences, emotions,
and reflections. It often follows a
chronological or thematic order.

Conclusion: Reflects on the experience

and leaves the reader with a final thought
or lesson.
