Peripheral Devices
 A computer peripheral device is an external device that
provides input and output for the computer.
 Some Common Input Devices Include:
 Keyboard
 Mouse
 Scanner
 Microphone
 Joystick
Mouse
 A mouse is an input device used to point and select
items on the computer screen. A mouse usually has
two buttons: A primary button (usually the left
button) and a secondary button.
Keyboard
 A keyboard is used for typing text into the computer.
There are many types of keys on the keyboard
 QWERTY Style & Non QWERTY Style
Scanner
 A scanner is a device that is used to capture images
from photographic prints, posters, magazine pages,
and similar sources for computer editing and display.
Microphone
 It is sometimes abbreviated as “mic”. A microphone is
a peripheral that allows computer users to input audio
into their computers.
Joystick
 Joystick is a lever that moves in all directions and
controls the movement of a pointer or some other
display symbol.
Some Common Output Devices
Both Input & Output
MODEM
 Stands for Modulation & Demodulation
 Converts Data
 Digital to Analogue
 Analogue to Digital
Types of Communication Ports
 A port serves as an interface between the computer
and peripheral devices

 Physical ports/ Communication ports are used for

connecting a computer trough a cable and a socket to a
peripheral device.
Serial Ports
 Gateway used for transferring data one bit at a time

 Nowadays serial port has been replaced with dedicated

ports like USB port
Parallel Port
 Parallel port is used for data transfer between a
computer and a peripheral device through a 25 or 36
pin connector.
 In parallel communication multiple bits are
transferred at a time.
