Tutorial Sheet: 9

Q1. [CO5]: A 100 kbps signal has to be transmitted over an AWGN channel with N 0=10−9
W/Hz. System requires maximum Pe =10−5 . Find the required transmitted power for i)
BPSK ii) BFSK.
Q2. [CO5]: A BPSK signal is demodulated with a slightly uncertainty in the carrier phase
which lies within ϕ radians of the exact carrier phase. Determine the effect of phase error ϕ
on average Pe .
Q3.[CO5]: Binary data are transmitted over a microwave link at the rate of 10 6 bits per
second and the power spectral density of the noise at the receiver input is 10 -10 watts per
hertz. Find the average carrier power required to maintain an average probability of error
Pe ≤10-4 for binary PSK.
Q4[CO5]:An FSK system transmits binary data at the rate of 2.5×10 6 bits per second.
During the course of transmission, white gaussian noise of zero mean and power spectral
density 10-20 watts per hertz is added to the signal. In the absence of noise, the amplitude of
received sinusoidal wave for digit 1 or 0 is 1 microvolt .Determine the average probability
of symbol error.
Q5CO5]: Compare the performance of given constellation diagram in Fig1. with standard
8-PSK.

Fig 1
Q6[CO5]:If 8 different phases and 2 different amplitudes are used in a 16-QAM
modulation system, sketch a constellation diagram that could be associated with the system.
Q7[CO5]: A bit error probability of Pbe=10‐3 is required for a system with a data rate of
600Kbps to be transmitted over an AWGN channel using M‐ary PSK modulation. The
system bandwidth is 400 KHz. Assume Grey code mapping is used for symbol to bit
assignment. Calculate the Es/n and Eb/n for the specified Pbe.
Q8[CO5]:PeI and PeQ denote the probabilities of symbol error for the in-phase and
quadrature channels of a narrowband system. Show that the average probability of symbol
error for the overall system is given by
Pe=PeI + PeQ - PeIPeQ
