Spring Design (4)

The document outlines various engineering problems related to the design of helical springs for different applications, including static and dynamic loads, material specifications, and safety factors. Each question requires the calculation of parameters such as wire diameter, coil diameter, number of turns, and forces involved in spring operation. The problems emphasize the need for appropriate material selection and design considerations to ensure functionality and safety in mechanical applications.

ENME3115: Mechanical Design II

Tutorial_4, Spring Design

Q1: Problem 14.11: Design a helical compression spring for a static load of 200 N at a
deflection of 32 mm with a safety factor of 2.5. Use C = 7.5 and Shear modulus G = 79.3
GPa. Specify all parameters necessary to manufacture the spring. Assume ASTM A228 wire
material, clash allowance = 0.15 and Set removed km = 0.65

Q2: A camshaft rotates 650 rpm, causing a follower to raise and lower once per revolution
shown in Figure 1. The follower is to be held against the cam by a helical compression spring
with force that values between 300 and 600 N as the spring length varies over a range of 25
mm. Ends are to be squared and ground. The material is to be shot-peened chrome-vanadium
steel valve spring wire, ASTM A232. Determine a suitable combination of d, D, Nt and Lf.

Figure 1

Q3: A hard-drawn steel wire extension spring has a wire diameter of 0.9 mm, an outside coil
diameter of 6.3 mm, hook radii of R1 = 2.7 in and R2 = 2.3 mm, and an initial tension of 5 N.
The number of body turns is 12.17. From the given information:
a) Determine the physical parameters of the spring.
b) Check the initial preload stress conditions.
c) Find the factors of safety under a static 25 N load.
Q4: Problem 14-17 Design a helical extension spring to handle a dynamic load that varies
from 175 N to 225 N over 8.5 mm working deflection. Use music wire and standard hooks.
The forcing frequency is 1500 rpm. Infinite life is desired. Minimize the package size.
Choose appropriate safety factors against fatigue, yielding, and surging.

Design Choices: Fatigue safety factor Nfb = 1.5, spring index C = 8, Wire endurance limit
Sew = 310 MPa, Wire strength A = 2153.5 MPa and b = 0.1625

Q5: A safety valve of 60mm diameter is to blow off at a pressure of 1.2 MPa. It is held on its
seat by a close coiled helical spring. The maximum lift of the valve is 10 mm (ymax). Design
a suitable compression spring of spring index 5 and providing an initial force of 2.6 kN. The
maximum shear stress (max) in the material of the wire is limited to 500MPa. The Modulus
of Rigidity (G) for the spring material is 80 GPa and square and ground ends. Calculate the
diameter of the spring wire (d), mean coil diameter (D), number of active turns Na and check
for stability. Hint: Fmax = max pressure/ area of the valve

Q6: A helical compression spring is made of cold-drawn spring steel wire (A227), 2 mm in diameter
and has an outside diameter of 22 mm. The ends are plain and ground, factor of safety of 1.2, yclash of
0.15 of working deflection and there are 8.5 total coils (Nt = 8.5)
a. Find the free length.
b. Estimate the spring rate.
c. Working deflection
d. What force is needed to compress the spring to its solid length?
e. Will the spring buckle in service?
