Mid Sem 4

This document outlines the mid-semester examination for the course 'Introduction to Finite Element Method' held on March 5, 2020. It consists of four questions that require the application of the Direct Stiffness Method or Potential Energy Approach to solve problems related to stiffness matrices, displacements, stresses, and forces in various structural systems. The exam is for a duration of 90 minutes and has a maximum score of 25 marks.

SECOND SEMESTER 2019-2020

Mid-semester Examination
Course No: CE F 435, Time: 9:00-10:30 AM
Course Title: Introduction to Finite Element Method
Date: 5.3.2020, Max. Marks: 25, Duration: 90 Minutes

Answer all of the four questions. (Note: Use Direct stiffness method of Finite Element Method
or Potential Energy Approach of FEM taught in the class for all the four problems)

1. Using direct stiffness method, formulate the global stiffness matrix and determine the
displacements at the nodes of the spring system shown in the Figure. Consider k1 = 40
N/mm, k2 = 50 N/mm, k3 = 80 N/mm, load at P = 60 N and load at node 4 = 50 N.
(4 Marks)

2. For the three stepped bar shown in Figure, determine the displacements and stresses. Take
E1 = 70 GPa, E2 = 105 GPa, and E3 = 200 GPa.

3. Determine the nodal displacements, element stress and support reactions in the truss
structure shown in below, assuming 1 and 3 are fixed. Use E = 70 GPa and A = 200 mm2.
(7 Marks)

4. Determine the nodal displacements and rotations and the global and element forces for the
beam shown in Figure. The beam is fixed at node 1, has a roller support at node 2, and has
an elastic spring support at node 3. A downward vertical force of P = 50 kN is applied at
node 3. Let E = 210 GPa and I = 2 X 10-4 m4 throughout the beam, and let k = 200 kN/m.
