Poppy Rose

The knitted flower is perfect around the

neck, around the waist, in the hair or
perhaps as a brooch.
Poppy Rose is a perfect little leftover yarn
project and can be knitted in most types of
yarn.

Sizes
(small) large
The flower can be knitted in two sizes. The
small one has a diameter of approx. 9 cm
[3,5 inches] and the large one has a
diameter of approx. 11 cm [4,5 inches].

Yarn
All flowers are worked in mohair (25 g = ca.
210 m). Work with 2 strands of yarn.

Amount of yarn
(6) 8 g yarn for one flower.

Tension
20 sts with 2 strands of yarn =
10 cm st St on 4 mm [US6].

Recommended needles
Double pointed needles 4 mm [US6].
M1R: Pick up the strand of yarn between stitches with the left needle from back to front. Knit in
the front leg of the stitch = 1 st increased.

M1L: Pick up the strand of yarn between stitches with the left needle from front to back. Knit in
the back leg of the stitch = 1 st increased.

SSK: Slip-slip-knit: Slip 1 stitch knitwise, then slip the next stitch knitwise as well (make sure you
slip them one at a time). Pass the stitches back to the left needle and knit them together through
the back loop = 1 st decreased.

Poppy Rose
Start in the middle of the front and end in the middle of the back.
Cast on 10 sts on double pointed needles 4 mm [US6]. Work st St in the round:
Round 1: *p1, k1*. Work from * to * a total of 5 times.
Round 2: *p1, m1L, k1, m1R*. Work from * to * a total of 5 times = 20 sts.
Place a stitch marker on each side of the purl stitches, so it is easier to see where to increase.
Round 3: *p1, m1L, k3, m1R*. Work from * to * a total of 5 times = 30 sts.
Round 4: *p1, m1L, k5, m1R*. Work from * to * a total of 5 times = 40 sts.
Round (5-7) 5-9: Continue in the same way as on round 3 and 4, i.e. increase on each side of each
purl stitch, as for each round there are 2 more knit stitches between the purl stitches. When all
rounds have been knitted, there are (11) 15 knit stitches between the purl stitches = (60) 80 sts.
Round (8) 10: *p1, k (11) 15*. Work from * to * a total of 5 times.
Round (9) 11: *p1, m1L, k (11) 15, m1R*. Work from * to * a total of 5 times = (70) 90 sts.
Work 10 rounds with *p1, k (13) 17*.
Next round: *Knit 1 in the purl stitch, but do not knit in the stitch on the needle, instead insert the
right needle through the purl stitch 12 stitches below the stitch on the needle (the stitch is easy to
recognize because it is slightly larger than the others), wrap the yarn around the needle and pull it
through the work, forward on the right side. Let the first stitch on the lefthand needle slide off the
needle (the stitch cannot unravel further down than the stitch just knitted). Knit (13) 17*. Work
from * to * a total of 5 times.
Note: You can find a video guide on how to knit this stitch at www.leknit.com.
Next round: *p1, k (13) 17*. Work from * to * a total of 5 times.
Next round: *p1, k2tog, k (9) 13, SSK*. Work from * to * a total of 5 times = (60) 80 sts.
Next round: *p1, k2tog, k (7) 11, SSK*. Work from * to * a total of 5 times = (50) 70 sts.
Continue in the same way by increasing on each side of the purl stitches on each round, as for
each round there are 2 knit stitches less between the purl stitches. Continue decreasing on each
round until there are 3 knit stitches between the purl stitches = (20) 20 sts.
Next round: K2tog to end of round = (10) 10 sts.
Now you can continue with I-cord or bind off as described:

© leKnit.com 2
I-cord: Next round: k2tog, k3, k2tog, k3 = 8 sts.
Distribute the 8 sts on 2 double pointed needles as follows: Place the first st on one needle, place
the next st on the other needle. Continue until there are 4 sts for each of the 2 cords, which are
worked separately.
Work an I-cord with the the first pair of 4 sts: K4, *do not turn. Push the sts across to the opposite
end of the needle. With the yarn in the back of the work, k4*. Repeat from * to * until the I-cord
has the desired length. Pull the thread through the stitches and fasten the end. Work the second
I-cord in the same way.
Bind off: Break the yarn, pull the thread through the remaining 10 stitches, tighten and fasten the
end.
Then close in the middle on the front of the flower: Thread a needle with the cast-on thread and
sew up and down through the 10 starting stitches. Tighten and sew through both layers of the
flower.
Optionally sew pearls or sequins in the center of the flower.
Knit the second I-cord in the same way.

Belt with flower

Knit a large flower with an I-cord, where each half is approximately 1 meter long.

Hair Ties
Knit a small flower. Join on the next round: knit 2 together, knit 3 together, knit 2 together, knit 3
together = 4 sts. Knit approx. 22 cm I-cord. Put the thread through the remaining 4 sts. Put rubber
band through the I-cord. The rubber band must be extended to the length of the I-cord. Tie a knot
on the rubber band. Sew the ends of the I-cord together.

Hair Clip
Knit a small flower and sew on a hair clip.
