M 1103 Eng

This document is a partial exam for the Faculty of Sciences at Lebanese University, consisting of three exercises focused on determinants, matrix equations, and vector subspaces in R3. The first exercise involves proving a property of determinants through induction, the second exercise requires calculations and solving systems of equations with matrices, and the third exercise explores the properties of subsets in R3, determining which are subspaces. The exam assesses understanding of linear algebra concepts and techniques.

Partial Exam
M 1103

Exercise 1 (5 points)
∀n > 2, a, b ∈ R we define:
 
a a 0 ··· 0
.. .. 
b 1 0 . . 

Dn = det  .. .. .. 
 0 . . . 0 
 .. .. .. .. 
 . . . . 0 
0 ··· 0 b 1

By induction on n, (n > 2), show that Dn is a constante to be determined.

Exercise 2 (5*4=20 points)

Let m ∈ R, we consider the matrices:
       
−1 −2 5 − m x 1 0
A= 2 3−m 0 ,X =  y ,B =  1 ,Y =  0 
3−m 1 −1 z 1 1

a. Calculate the determinant of A. ( Hint: use C2 → C2 + C3 .)

b. Let m = 0. Whithout calculation, solve the system (S0 ) : AX = 0.

c. Let m = 2. Solve (S) : AX = B using the method of row echelon form.

d. Calculate A.Y and deduce a system (S 0 ) : AX = B 0 having a solution for every m ∈ R.

Exercise 3 (5*5=25 points)

In R3 , we consider the subsets:

E = {(x, y, z) ∈ R3 , x + 2y = z}

F = L{u, v}, u = (1, 0, 1), v = (3, 2, 7)

G = {(x, y, z) ∈ R3 , x2 − 2y 2 = 0}

a. Show that G is not a subspace of R3 over R.

b. Show that E is a subspace of R3 over R.

c. Verify that u, v ∈ E. Deduce that F ⊆ E.

d. Find S = {x1 , x2 } a system of generator of E over R.

e. Deduce that E = F.

Good Work.
