Lecture Notes Functions Transformation

The document outlines transformations of functions, including translations, stretches, and reflections. It provides specific equations for vertical and horizontal translations, vertical and horizontal stretches, and reflections in both axes, using the parent function y=f(x)=x² and other examples. Additionally, it includes comparisons of graphs to illustrate the effects of these transformations.

Functions – Transformation SL 2.

11
A. Translations:

Vertical Translation: y=f ( x )+ b

Horizontal Translation: y=f (x−a)

B. Stretches (Dilations)

Vertical Stretch: y= pf ( x ) , p>0

Horizontal Stretch: y=f ( qx ) , q>0

C. Reflections

Reflect in the x-axis (Flip Vertically): y=−f (x )

Reflect in the y-axis (Flip Horizontally): y=f (−x )

A. Translations:

Consider the Parent Function y=f ( x )=x 2

[Note: Parent Function means the simplest form of the same kind of
function.]

1. Vertical Translation

Compare the graphs of y=f ( x )=x 2 and y=f ( x )+ 2=x 2+ 2

Compare the graphs of y=f ( x )=x 2 and y=f ( x )−2=x 2−2

2. Horizontal Translation

Compare the graphs of y=f ( x )=x 2 and y=f ( x−2 )=( x−2)2

Compare the graphs of y=f ( x )=x 2 and y=f ( x+ 2 )=(x +2)2

3. Vector form of Translations

B. Stretches

Consider the function y=f ( x )=x+ 2

1. Vertical Stretch
1
Compare the graphs of y=f ( x )=x+ 2 , y=2 f ( x ) and y= f ( x )
2

2. Horizontal Stretch

Compare the graphs of y=f ( x )=x+ 2 , y=f ( 2 x ) and y=f ( 12 x )

C. Reflection

Consider the function y=f ( x )=2 x+3

Compare the graphs of y=f ( x )=2 x+3 , y=−f ( x ) and y=f (−x )
