Graphs of the

Circular Functions

Senior High School
University of Santo Tomas

This material was prepared by the teacher for the exclusive and personal use of those students who are officially enrolled in the section. Some parts of the
presentation were lifted from various print and online resources. Any error that may be found in the material was not intentionally committed by the teacher.
Lord, true source of light and wisdom
Give me a keen sense of understanding
A retentive memory
And the capacity to grasp things correctly.

Grant me the grace

To be accurate in my expositions
And the skill to express myself
With thoroughness and clarity.

Be with me at the start of my work

Guide its progress
And bring it to completion.

Grant this through Christ, our Lord.

Amen.
Learning Competencies
• illustrate the domain and range of the different circular
functions
• graph the six circular functions (a) amplitude, (b) period, and
(c) phase shift
• solve situational problems involving circular functions

Recall
• A function f is even if f(–t) = f(t), and is odd if f(–t) = –f(t).

Recall
• Functions that behave in such a repetitive (or cyclic)
manner are called periodic.

In a graphing app/software, analyze the graph of the following functions by describing

their:
a. domain
b. range
c. x-intercepts (if there is any)
d. vertical asymptotes (if there is any)

1. 𝑦 = tan 𝑥 2. 𝑦 = cot 𝑥

5. The horizontal (phase) shift is ℎ units
a. to the right if ℎ > 0.
b. to the left if ℎ < 0.
6. The vertical shift is 𝑘 units
a. upward if 𝑘 > 0.
b. downward if 𝑘 < 0.

Example Suppose the lowest point of a Ferris wheel is 1.5 meters off the ground,
and its radius is 15 m. It makes one complete revolution every 30 seconds.
Starting at the lowest point, find a cosine function that gives the height
above the ground of a riding child in terms of the time t in seconds.

CLOSING PRAYER
We give You thanks, Almighty God, for all the good things
You have given us today; for wisdom to understand, for
moral courage to avoid wrong and for the love to act kindly
towards others. Oh God, we are truly sorry for any thought,
word or deed by which we have offended Your divine
goodness or willfully wronged our neighbors.
Help us to be better persons everyday.
Amen.
