Additional student instructions


1. Students must upload their answer scripts in a single PDF file (answer scripts must not be
password protected or uploaded as “read only” files)
2. Incorrect file format and uncollated answer scripts will not be considered.
3. NO emailed scripts will be accepted.
4. Students are advised to preview submissions (answer scripts) to ensure legibility and that
the correct answer script file has been uploaded.
5. Mark awarded for incomplete submission will be the student’s final mark. No opportunity for
resubmission will be granted.
6. Mark awarded for illegible scanned submission will be the student’s final mark. No
opportunity for resubmission will be granted.
7. Submissions will only be accepted from registered student accounts.
8. Students suspected of dishonest conduct during the assessment will be subjected to
disciplinary processes. Students may not copy from any other person or request assistance
from any other person during their assessment undertaking. Plagiarism is a violation of
academic integrity and students who plagiarise, copy from published work or Artificial
Intelligence Software (eg ChatGPT) or online sources (eg course material), will be in
violation of the Policy on Academic Integrity and the Student Disciplinary Code and may be
referred to a disciplinary hearing. Unisa has a zero tolerance for plagiarism and/or any
other forms of academic dishonesty.
9. Non-adherence to the processes for uploading assessment responses will not qualify the

QUESTION 1 [24 Marks]


Given the frame in Figure 1 below. Do the following:

1.1 Calculate the reactions at A and D. (5).


1.2 Section the frame and calculate all the forces on the joints. (6)
1.3 Draw the shear force diagram. (5).
1.4 Draw the bending moment diagram. (6).
1.5 Draw the axial diagram (2)

QUESTION 2 [15 Marks]


Figure 2 below shows an overhanging beam. Using moment-area theorems,
calculate the maximum deflection between member AB.

QUESTION 3 [16 Marks]


A column in Figure 3 below consists of two grade 300W steel PC300 x 100 Parallel
Flange Channels arranged as shown. The column, which is 9 m long, is connected
such that it is fixed at both ends about its major principal axis X-X and fixed at the
top and pinned at the bottom end about its minor principal axis Y-Y.

3.1 Calculate the Euler buckling load for the strut (14).
3.2 Calculate the failure load for the strut according to Rankine’s theory (2).

QUESTION 4 [10 Marks]


A compressive force of 60 kN acts parallel to the longitudinal axis of the I-section
shown in Figure 4 below, in the position indicated. The area of the cross-section is
1500 𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚2 , and 𝐼𝐼𝑥𝑥𝑥𝑥 = 2.7 𝑥𝑥 106 𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚4 , and 𝐼𝐼 𝑦𝑦𝑦𝑦 = 0.9 𝑥𝑥 106 𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚4 . Find the positions
of greatest tensile and compressive stresses.
