WHAT IS PHOTOSHOP?
• Adobe Photoshop is a professional software application used for image editing
and photo retouching, available for both Windows and macOS.
• It allows users to:
o Create, enhance, and edit images, illustrations, and artwork.
o Change backgrounds.
o Simulate realistic or painted effects.
o Produce imaginative or surreal visuals.

WHAT IS PIXLR?
• Pixlr is a web-based image editing tool with a wide range of photo editing
features.
• It works directly from the browser (no installation required) and is compatible
with both desktop and mobile devices.

KEY FEATURES OF PIXLR:

1. Image Editing Tools

Includes cropping, resizing, rotating, brightness/contrast/saturation
adjustments, red-eye removal, and spot healing.
2. Layers and Masks
Similar to Photoshop, Pixlr supports layers for non-destructive editing and
masks for selective adjustments.
3. Filters and Effects
Offers filters, overlays, and texture effects to modify the appearance of images
creatively.
4. Text and Graphics
Allows text insertion with customization of font, size, color, and placement. Also
includes pre-designed stickers and shapes.
5. Collage and Templates
Users can combine multiple images into collages using predefined templates.
6. Browser-Based and Mobile-Friendly
Fully functional in web browsers and accessible on mobile platforms for on-the-
go editing.
APPLICATIONS OF PIXLR
• Basic and advanced photo editing
• Graphic design and illustration
• Content creation for social media
• Collage and template-based design
• Educational and creative student projects
• Quick corrections for photographers

PIXLR ELEMENTS
Pixlr Elements refers to commonly used features within the tool:

• Adjusting image colors

• Cropping and resizing
• Removing red-eye or dust spots
• Drawing with a pen or pencil
• Adding and formatting text
• Removing objects or people
• Organizing and sorting photos
• Publishing or sharing edited images online

ADVANTAGES OF PIXLR
• No installation: Runs in a browser, no need to download software.

Photoshop, and Lightroom.
DISADVANTAGES OF PIXLR
• Limited advanced features compared to Photoshop.
• Internet dependency: Requires a stable connection for full functionality.
• Not ideal for professional-level projects or complex editing workflows.
• Reliance on the Pixlr platform: Service issues or shutdowns can affect
accessibility.

DIGITAL IMAGES
WHAT IS A DIGITAL IMAGE?

• A digital image is made up of pixels (picture elements).

• It has been digitized into a numerical format that computers can process and
display.

WHAT IS A PIXEL?

• A pixel is the smallest unit of a digital image — a tiny square of color.

• Thousands or millions of pixels form a complete image.

TYPES OF DIGITAL IMAGES

BITMAP (RASTER) IMAGES

• Images made up of a grid of individual pixels.

• Each pixel has a specific color value.
• Best used for photos and realistic images.
• File size increases with image resolution.

VECTOR GRAPHICS

• Images created using mathematical formulas, based on lines, shapes, and

curves.
• Resolution-independent — can be resized without losing quality.
• Ideal for logos, icons, and diagrams, but not suitable for detailed photos.
IMAGE RESOLUTION
• Measured in PPI (Pixels Per Inch).
• Higher resolution means more detail (sharper image).
• Lower resolution results in fewer pixels, causing distortion or blurriness when
enlarged.

IMAGE METADATA
• Metadata means data about data — it describes the contents and attributes of
an image file.
• Used for organizing, categorizing, and identifying image files.

COMMON METADATA FIELDS:

• Title and Description: Name or purpose of the image.

• Tags and Categories: Keywords for searching and grouping.
• Creator and Creation Date: Who made it and when.
• Last Modified Information: Who edited it last and the time of the change.
• Access Permissions: Who can view or modify the file.

Example Metadata:

• File name: Foam Task.jpg

• Author: Piotr Kononow
• Dimensions: 5312 × 2988
• File Size: 3.2 MB
• Camera: Samsung SM-G920
• Lens: 4.3 mm, f/1.9
• Date Taken: August 15, 2016
• Exposure: 1/402 sec, Program AE

STORAGE UNITS
Unit Equivalent Example Use
Bit 1 or 0 Smallest unit; used in binary representation
Byte 8 bits One character or one grayscale pixel
Kilobyte (KB) 1024 bytes Small document or email (~2 KB)
Megabyte (MB) 1024 KB 1 minute of MP3 or a high-quality photo
Gigabyte (GB) 1024 MB About 300 songs or several videos
Terabyte (TB) 1024 GB ~100 DVD-quality movies
Enough music to play continuously for 2000+
Petabyte (PB) 1024 TB
years

HOW TO CALCULATE IMAGE SIZE

You can calculate the storage size of a digital image using its dimensions and color
depth.

Formula:

1. Total Pixels = Width × Height (in pixels)

2. Image Size in Bytes = Total Pixels × 3 (for RGB images)
3. Kilobytes (KB) = Bytes ÷ 1024
4. Megabytes (MB) = Kilobytes ÷ 1024

Example:

For a 1920 × 1080 image:

1. Total Pixels = 1920 × 1080 = 2,073,600

2. Size in Bytes = 2,073,600 × 3 = 6,220,800 bytes
3. Size in KB = 6,220,800 ÷ 1024 ≈ 6075 KB
4. Size in MB = 6075 ÷ 1024 ≈ 5.93 MB

So the image size is approximately 5.93 MB.

IMAGE COMPRESSION

Lossless Compression

• No data is lost.
• Image quality remains the same.
• Files are stored more efficiently.
• Formats: PNG, BMP

Lossy Compression

• Some data is discarded to reduce file size.

• Quality is slightly reduced, but file size is much smaller.
• Formats: JPEG, GIF

COMMON IMAGE FILE FORMATS

Format Extension Description
