Random Variable:
It is A rule that assigns a real number to each *Outcome of a random experiment
Types of Random Variable – a) Discrete random variable b) Continuous random variable
a) A random variable x which can take a *finite number of values in an interval of domain is
called Discrete random variable
b) A random variable X, which can take *any value in its domain or in an interval is called
Continuous random variable

Binomial Distribution
Binomial Distribution was invented by James Bernoulli hence it is also called as Bernoulli's
distribution/trials
Bernoulli's distribution/trials : Repeated independent trials with two possible outcomes at each trial
are known as Bernoulli's trial( The probability of success or failure at each of the outcome is
assumed to be through out the experiment
Parameter of Bernoulli distribution is P.
I) Mean of Bernoulli distribution P
II) Variance of Bernoulli distribution is pq
Properties of Binomial distribution
i- If n = 1, the binomial distribution reduces to Bernoulli distribution
Ii-Binomial distribution has two parameters n & p
Iii-Mean of binomial distribution is *np
Iv-Variance of binomial distribution is *npq
V- the moment generating function of binomial distribution is (q +pet)n

Poisson Distribution
Poisson distribution discovered by Simeon Denis Poisson
*In the binomial distribution as n *increases and probability of success *decreases and np
remains fixed, the binomial distribution tends to Poisson distribution
Properties of Poisson distribution:-
a) Poisson distribution has only one parameter ‘μ’
b) Mean of Poisson distribution (variate) is μ
c) Variance of Poisson distribution (variate) is also μ
d) *In Poisson distribution mean and variance are equal
e) Poisson distribution is useful where the probability of success is small

Normal distribution
Normal distribution was invented by De-Moivre
Normal distribution is maximally used probability distribution in the theory of statistics
Properties of Normal distribution
i- The normal distribution has bell shape curve it is symmetrical about x = μ (the mode of
normal curve lies at point x = μ
Ii- The curve extends / ranges between *- to
Iv- in normal distribution mean = median = mode
V-The normal curve is *Unimodal
