PRC Oel Report Investigation of Durability Properties of Coarse Aggregate Using Suitable Tests

This report investigates the durability properties of coarse aggregates through Sieve Analysis, Aggregate Impact Value Test, and Fineness Modulus determination, following ASTM standards. Results indicate that the aggregates meet acceptable grading and toughness criteria, confirming their suitability for durable concrete construction. PRC OEL REPORT

Investigation of Durability Properties of Coarse Aggregate Using Suitable Tests

1. Introduction
Coarse aggregates are a fundamental component of concrete and significantly influence its strength,
workability, and durability. To ensure their suitability for use in construction, aggregates must undergo
various tests that evaluate their physical properties. This report presents the results and analysis of three
standard tests conducted on coarse aggregates—Sieve Analysis, Aggregate Impact Value Test, and
Fineness Modulus determination—in accordance with relevant ASTM standards. The goal is to assess the
aggregate’s durability characteristics and its potential performance in concrete applications.

2. Objective
To investigate the durability and grading characteristics of coarse aggregate by conducting:
 Sieve Analysis (ASTM C136/C136M)
 Aggregate Impact Value Test (ASTM D5874)
 Fineness Modulus Determination (derived from sieve analysis)

3. Materials and Methods

3.1. Sieve Analysis
 Standard Used: ASTM C136/C136M – Standard Test Method for Sieve Analysis of Fine and
Coarse Aggregates
 Apparatus: Standard sieves (sizes ranging from 75 mm to 4.75 mm), mechanical sieve shaker,
balance
 Procedure:
1. A representative sample of coarse aggregate was dried and weighed.
2. The sample was placed in the sieve stack and subjected to shaking for 10 minutes.
3. The retained weight on each sieve was recorded, and the percentage passing was
calculated.
3.2. Aggregate Impact Value Test
 Standard Used: ASTM D5874 – Standard Test Methods for Determination of the Impact Value
(IV) of a Soil
 Apparatus: Aggregate impact testing machine, cylindrical measure, tamping rod
 Procedure:
1. The aggregate was filled into the cylindrical measure in three layers, each tamped 25
times.
2. The test specimen was subjected to 15 blows from a standard hammer.
3. The fines generated were sieved through a 2.36 mm sieve and weighed.
4. Impact value (%) = (Weight of fines / Total sample weight) × 100
3.3. Fineness Modulus Determination
 Derived From: Sieve Analysis results (ASTM C136)
 Procedure:
1. The cumulative percentage retained on each sieve was calculated.
2. The fineness modulus (FM) was obtained by summing these cumulative percentages and
dividing by 100.

5. Discussion
 Grading: The sieve analysis results indicate whether the aggregate conforms to standard grading
requirements. A well-graded aggregate enhances workability and reduces voids in concrete.
 Durability: The impact value provides insight into the aggregate's toughness. A lower value
suggests higher resistance to sudden impacts and greater durability.
 Fineness Modulus: FM values between 6.5 and 8.0 are typical for coarse aggregates. The result
helps classify the aggregate’s coarseness, impacting mix proportioning and concrete density.
6. Conclusion
The tests conducted provide vital data on the physical and mechanical properties of coarse aggregates.
Based on the results:
 The sieve analysis confirms that the aggregate lies within the acceptable grading zone.
 The impact value is within the permissible range, suggesting good toughness and durability.
 The fineness modulus value supports appropriate gradation for use in concrete mix design.
These characteristics collectively affirm the aggregate’s suitability for durable concrete construction.
