Introduction to the Computer Laboratory

 Objective: Ensure students understand how to use the computer lab responsibly, operate
computers, and identify basic computer parts and concepts.

 Importance: A computer lab is a shared learning space. Proper usage ensures equipment
longevity, smooth operations, and a positive learning environment.

Part 1: Computer Laboratory Dos and Don’ts

Dos

1. Follow the Rules: Adhere to lab policies and instructor guidelines.

2. Be Respectful: Handle equipment with care and avoid disturbing others.

3. Log In/Out Properly: Use your assigned username/password and log out when done.

4. Keep It Clean: Maintain a tidy workspace and avoid eating or drinking in the lab.

5. Report Issues: Inform the instructor immediately if a computer malfunctions.

6. Use Resources Wisely: Avoid unnecessary printing or excessive use of internet bandwidth.

Don’ts

1. No Food or Drinks: Prevent accidental spills that can damage equipment.

2. Don’t Install Software: Avoid installing unauthorized programs or games.

3. Avoid Rough Handling: Treat computers, mice, and keyboards gently.

4. Don’t Alter Settings: Leave system settings as they are to ensure uniform functionality.

5. No Unauthorized Access: Refrain from accessing restricted files or websites.

Part 2: Basic Computer Operations

1. Starting a Computer

o Locate the power button on the CPU or laptop.

o Wait for the operating system to load (e.g., Windows, macOS).

2. Using the Mouse and Keyboard

o Mouse: Point, click, drag, and scroll to navigate.

o Keyboard: Enter text, use shortcuts (e.g., Ctrl + C for copy, Ctrl + V for paste).

3. Opening and Closing Applications

o Close programs using the "X" button or Alt + F4.

4. Saving and Retrieving Files

o Save files in appropriate folders (e.g., Documents).

o Use meaningful filenames and backup files on external drives or cloud storage.

5. Shutting Down Properly

o Click on the Start menu → Select “Shut Down” → Wait for the system to turn off.

Part 3: Basic Computer Concepts and Parts

Concepts

1. What is a Computer?

o A device that processes data and performs tasks based on instructions (software).

2. Hardware vs. Software

o Hardware: The physical components of a computer.

o Software: The programs and operating systems that run on the computer.

3. Input, Process, Output Cycle

o Input (keyboard/mouse) → Process (CPU) → Output (monitor/printer).

Parts of a Computer

1. Input Devices

o Keyboard: For typing.

o Mouse: For navigation.

2. Output Devices

o Monitor: Displays information visually.

o Printer: Produces physical copies.

3. System Unit

o Contains the CPU, memory, and storage.

4. Storage Devices

o Hard Drive: Stores files.

o USB Drive/Cloud: Portable or online storage.

5. Other Components

o Power Supply: Provides electricity.

o Network Ports: Connect to the internet.

Part 4: Hands-On Activity

1. Objective: Familiarize students with basic computer operations.

2. Steps:

o Start and shut down a computer.

o Open, edit, save, and close a document (e.g., in MS Word).

o Use a web browser to search for simple information.

o Practice logging in and out of a user account.

Part 5: Discussion and Q&A

 Allow students to ask questions about lab usage, computer operations, or hardware.

 Encourage sharing of experiences or challenges in using computers for the first time.
