Signals&Systems Assignment 2024

The document outlines an assignment on BEE/BCT signals and systems, focusing on the Fourier transform and its properties, including practical applications and calculations for specific signals. It also includes a question on first-order difference equations to find the impulse response of a causal system, and a query regarding the causality of a discrete system along with its output for a given input. The assignment consists of theoretical explanations and practical calculations related to signal analysis.

BEE/BCT signals and systems

Assignment:

Question one
a) Explain one practical application of Fourier transform concept in signal analysis. State
(not derive) the following properties of the transform: linearity, time shifting,
frequency shifting, time reversal, convolution, integration, differentiation in time and
frequency, time and frequency scaling.
b) Calculate the Fourier transform of the following time domain signals
(i) 𝑥(𝑡) = 𝑒 −|𝑡|
(ii) 𝑥(𝑡) = sin⁡(2𝜋100𝑡)

Question two
c) Consider the first-order difference equation
y[n] + 2 y[n − 1] = x[n]
Assume the condition of initial rest. This means that if x[n] = 0 for n  n0 , then y[n] = 0
for n  n0 . Find the impulse response of a causal system whose input and output are
related by this difference equation. Assume that x[n] = 0 for n  0 .

Question three
Consider a discrete system defined by
𝑥(𝑛) + 𝑥(𝑛 − 2)
𝑦(𝑛) =
2

Is the system causal? . Also find the output of the system for an input x(n) given by:
𝑛⁡⁡⁡⁡⁡⁡⁡⁡⁡⁡⁡⁡⁡⁡⁡⁡⁡⁡𝑛 = 0,1,2,3,4
𝑥(𝑛) = ⁡ {
