METHOD STATEMENT FOR PUMP SHAFT ALIGNMENT

PERFORMED BY: Malaki Lwanga, Peter Nkulu, Josephat John, Davinus Deus

REVIEWED BY: Pak Slamet Riyadi

DATE: 20/05/2025

1. Purpose
To ensure correct alignment of the pump and driver (motor) to prevent premature wear,
vibration, and failure.

2. Scope
Applicable to the alignment of horizontal centrifugal pumps and drivers (e.g., electric
motors, engines).

3. Responsibilities
• Mechanical Supervisor: Supervise and verify proper alignment.
• Technician/Fitter: Perform alignment work.
• QA/QC Inspector: Inspect and record results.

4. Tools & Equipment

• Feeler gauges
• Dial indicators or laser alignment tool
• Straight edge and spirit level (for rough alignment)
• Torque wrench
• Alignment shims
• Cleaning materials
• Combination spanners

5. Safety Precautions
• lockout/tagout procedures.
• Wear appropriate PPE (helmet, gloves, goggles, boots).
• Ensure lifting tools are certified and safe for use.

6. Procedure
6.1. Pre-job Preparation and Execution

• Ensure the pump and driver are properly installed on the baseplate.
• Check foundation and grounding for levelness and curing.
• Remove coupling guard.
• Clean the faces.

6.2. Initial (Rough) Alignment

• Use straight edge and feeler gauge to check initial alignment.

• Adjust motor position by adding/removing shims under motor feet.
• Ensure angular and parallel alignment are within acceptable tolerances.

6.3. Final Alignment

Option 1: Dial Gauge Method

• Mount dial indicators across the coupling.

• Rotate shafts together and record TIR (Total Indicator Reading) for
vertical and horizontal positions.
• Adjust motor in small increments as needed.
• Re-check after every adjustment.

Option 2: Laser Alignment Method

• Set up laser alignment tool per manufacturer’s instructions.

• Record readings and adjust motor position.
• Recheck alignment until readings are within specified tolerances (typically
±0.05 mm or as per manufacturer).

6.4. Tightening & Final Checks

• Torque motor bolts as per specification.

• Re-check alignment after tightening.
• Ensure the coupling gap is correct.
• Reinstall and secure coupling guard.

7. Acceptance Criteria
• Alignment within manufacturer or ISO/ANSI standards.
• All bolts torqued, and equipment securely fastened.
• No excessive vibration during trial run.

8. Documentation
• Alignment checklists
• Final alignment readings
• QA/QC inspection report
• As-built drawings (if required)

9. References
• Manufacturer's installation manual
• ISO 1940-1 (Balance Quality)
• ANSI/ASA S2.75 (Shaft Alignment)
