Practice Questions - 1

1. Capacitance ‘𝐶’ of a parallel plate structure is calculated as 20 pF using 𝐶= 𝜀𝑜 𝜀𝑟𝐴/ 𝑑 , where

𝜀𝑜 is the permittivity of free space, 𝜀𝑟 is the relative permittivity of the dielectric, 𝐴 is the
overlapping area of the electrodes and 𝑑 is the distance between them. The value of 𝐶 is then
measured using an LCR meter. If the meter is assumed to be ideal and it introduces no error
due to cable capacitance, which one of the following readings is likely to be correct?
(A) 20.5 pF (B) 20 pF (C) 19.5 pF (D) 10 pF

2. Pair the quantities

3. Four strain gauges RA, RB, RC and RD, each with nominal resistance R, are connected in a
bridge configuration. When a force is applied, RA and RD increase by ∆R and RB and RC
decrease by ∆R as shown. A potentiometer with total resistance Rv is connected as shown. If
R = 100 Ω, and ∆R = 1 Ω, the minimum value of resistance Rv required to balance the bridge
is ______Ω (rounded off to two decimal places)

4. The capacitor shown in the figure has parallel plates, with each plate having an area A. The
thickness of the dielectric materials are d1 and d2 and their relative permittivities are ε1 and ε2,
respectively. Assume that the fringing field effects are negligible and ε0 is the permittivity of
free space.

5. A linear potentiometer (0 − 10 kΩ) is used to measure the water level as shown in the figure.
The resistance between A and C varies linearly from 0 to 10 kΩ for a change in water level
from 0 to 20 cm. The sensor is excited using a DC voltage source, VS = 10 V with an internal
resistance, RS = 200 Ω. If Vout = 5 V, the water level is ______ cm (rounded off to one decimal
place).
6. In the bridge circuit shown in the figure, under balanced condition, the values of R and C
respectively, are

(A) 1.010 Ω and 19.802 µF (B) 9.901 Ω and 0.505 µF

(C) 19.802 Ω and 1.01 µF (D) 39.604 Ω and 2.02 µF

7. In the figure shown, R = 1 kΩ and C = 0.1 µF. For a dc gain of −10, the 3 dB cut-off
frequency (rounded off to one decimal place) is Assume the opamp is ideal.

(A)159.1 Hz (B) 1591.5 Hz (C) 1750.7 Hz (D) 175.0 Hz

8. A piezoelectric pressure sensor has a bandpass characteristic with cut-off frequencies of 0.1
Hz and 1 MHz, and a sensitivity of 100 mV/kPa. The sensor is subjected to a static constant
pressure of 100 kPa. Its steady-state output will be -

(A) 0 V (B) 0.1 V (C) 1 V (D) 10 V

9. A high Q coil having distributed (self) capacitance is tested with a Q-meter. First resonance
at ω1 = 106 rad/s is obtained with a capacitance of 990 pF. The second resonance at ω2 = 2 ×
106 rad/s is obtained with a 240 pF capacitance. The value of the inductance (in mH) of the coil
is ____________(up to one decimal place).

10. The inductance of a coil is measured using the bridge shown in the figure. Balance (D =
0) is obtained with C1 = 1 nF, R1 = 2.2 MΩ, R2 = 22.2 kΩ, R4 = 10 kΩ. The value of the
inductance Lx (in mH) is___________.

11. A 1000 Ω strain gage (Rg) has a gage factor of 2.5. It is connected in the bridge as shown
in figure. The strain gage is subjected with a positive strain of 400 μm/m. The output Vo (in
mV) of the bridge is_________ (up to two decimal places).
