1.
a) Determine the domain of the given functions.
i. 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = 1 + √4 − 𝑦 2
ii. 𝑔(𝑥, 𝑦) = 𝑙𝑛(2𝑥 − 3𝑦 + 1)
1
iii. ℎ(𝑥, 𝑦) = sin (𝑦−ln(𝑥+1))

b)
𝑥𝑦
i. Prove whether lim exists or not.
(𝑥,𝑦)→(0,0) √𝑥 2 +𝑦 2

2𝑥𝑦 2
ii. Find lim if it exists.
(𝑥,𝑦)→(0,0) 𝑥 2 +𝑦 4

iii. Show that lim (𝑥 2 + 2𝑦) = 5 using definition of limit.

(𝑥,𝑦)→(1,2)

(𝑥 3 −𝑦 3 )
(𝑥, 𝑦) ≠ (0,0)
c) Check whether 𝑔(𝑥, 𝑦) = { 𝑥 2 +𝑦 2 is continuous or not. Justify
0 (𝑥, 𝑦) = (0,0)
your answer.

2.The concentration of a certain chemical in a fluid is given by the function:

𝐶(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) = 4𝑥 2 + 2𝑥𝑦 − 𝑦𝑧 2
Where 𝐶 is measured in 𝑚𝑔/𝐿 and 𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧 are in meters.
a) Evaluate the gradient of the function given above.
b) Find the rate of change of the concentration at the point (2,1,3) in the direction of
the vector 𝑣 = (1, −1,2)
c) In which direction does 𝐶 change most rapidly at point (2,1,3)?
d) What is the maximum rate of change at point (2, 1, 3)?

3.
a) Suppose 𝑥 2 𝑧 + 𝑧 2 𝑦 + 𝑦 2 − 𝑥𝑦𝑧 = 5 defines 𝑧 implicitly as a function of 𝑥 and 𝑦.
𝜕𝑧 𝜕𝑧 𝜕𝑧 𝜕𝑧
If 𝜕𝑥 and exist, find expressions for and .
𝜕𝑦 𝜕𝑥 𝜕𝑦

b) Let 𝑓1 = 𝑥12 + 𝑥22 and 𝑓2 = 𝑥14 + 2𝑥12 𝑥22 + 𝑥24 . Show that 𝑓1 and 𝑓2 are
functionally dependent on ℝ2 .
c) A cylindrical storage tank is used in an industrial plant to store liquid chemicals. The volume
of the tank, 𝑉, depends on its radius 𝑟 and height ℎ, given by the equation:
𝑉(𝑟, ℎ) = 𝜋𝑟 2 ℎ
Where 𝑟 and ℎ are measured in meters and 𝑉 is in cubic meters.
i. Find the quadratic approximation of 𝑉(𝑟, ℎ) at the point (2,5) using the second-order Taylor
expansion.
ii. Suppose due to a minor design modification, the radius and height of the tank change
slightly: 𝑟 = 2 + 0.1𝑚 and ℎ = 5 − 0.05𝑚. use the quadratic approximation to estimate
the new volume of the tank.
iii. Compare the estimated volume change using quadratic approximation with the exact
volume change and discuss the accuracy of the approximation.

4.
a) Find critical points of the following functions and determine the nature of critical points.
i. 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = (𝑦 − 2)𝑥 2 − 𝑦 2
ii. 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = 7𝑥 − 8𝑦 + 2𝑥𝑦 − 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2
b) Determine whether the following functions are convex, concave or neither:
i. 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = 𝑥 4 + 16𝑦 4 + 32𝑥𝑦 3 + 8𝑥 3 𝑦 + 24𝑥 2 𝑦 2
ii. 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = 𝑒 𝑥+𝑦 + 𝑒 𝑥−𝑦
