Abstract
Natural Language Processing (NLP), once a niche area within computer science and linguistics,
has evolved into a transformative field with widespread influence across numerous academic
disciplines. By analyzing citation patterns and scholarly collaborations, researchers can trace the
growing integration of NLP into domains such as healthcare, law, education, political science,
and the humanities. This article surveys the trends in cross-disciplinary citation, identifies
influential works and collaborative networks, and explores how NLP methodologies are
enriching research in other fields. It also reflects on the implications of interdisciplinary
diffusion, challenges in collaboration, and future directions for fostering mutual innovation
across scientific boundaries.
1. Introduction
Academic research is increasingly interdisciplinary, with technologies like NLP playing a pivotal
role in bridging diverse domains. Citation analysis offers a window into how ideas travel across
fields, revealing not only intellectual dependencies but also collaborative potentials. The
integration of NLP into non-computational disciplines is reshaping research methodologies, data
interpretation, and the formulation of new theories.
NLP is used to mine electronic health records, understand patient feedback, and support clinical
decision-making. Citations often come from journals like Journal of Biomedical Informatics and
Nature Medicine.
Scholars in history and literature use NLP for sentiment analysis, stylometry, and topic modeling
of historical texts, citing works from ACL, EMNLP, and LREC conferences.
Legal researchers apply NLP for contract analysis, precedent mining, and policy evaluation.
Citations emerge in law journals referencing computational linguistics frameworks.
Language learning tools, automated essay scoring, and learner feedback systems are powered by
NLP, with educational research increasingly citing NLP papers on syntactic parsing and
discourse analysis.
Metrics valued in NLP (e.g., F1 score, BLEU) may not translate well into real-world impact
measures in other fields.
7. Conclusion
NLP is no longer confined to computational linguistics—it is a catalyst for innovation across
multiple academic domains. Citation patterns highlight its expanding influence, while
interdisciplinary research enriches both NLP and the fields it touches. To fully realize its
transformative potential, future efforts must prioritize communication, collaboration, and co-
creation between NLP experts and scholars from other disciplines.
