Lesson 3: Visual Elements as Tools for Achieving Meaning and Nonlinear Texts

Vectors - are the graphical representations used to illustrate concepts visually. They can also
demonstrate meaningful relationships of the said concepts in graphical form.
Vectors help clarity complex ideas and enhance the visual appeal of a document in non-
journalistic writing.

Technical Editing - pertains to the process of reviewing and revising the the document to ensure that
accuracy and clarity are achieved.
This process is important in communicating information clearly and effectively to the readers.

Animations - these are dynamic visual elements that can be used to convey information and engage
readers further in non-journalistic writing.
To further enhance comprehension and retention of information among the target audience,
animations are incorporated into presentations, digital documents or online platforms.

Moreover, you can also use the following to represent or summarize the contents of non-
journalistic texts.

Charts - are visual representations of data or information that are shown either through tables and the
like. An example of this is the Periodic Table of Elements.

Graphs - are also visual representations of mathematical relationships or functions. They can be
displayed as lines, curves, or points. For instance, a line or bar graph showing the data about the
preferred activities of the students during summer break.

Inforgraphics - are visual representations of information, data or knowledge that integrates text, images,
and graphics to show complex ideas in a visually appealing manner. This helps readers to digest the
content easily.
Examples are used in presentations, reports or other educational materials.

Graphical organizers - are also called concept maps, mind maps, or flowcharts. They are visual tools
used to organize and represent information or concepts in a structured format.
Moreover, they can be used to outline or map out ideas, show connection between and among
concepts, or summarize complex information.

By integrating vectors, technical editing, and animations and other visual representations such
as charts, graphs, inforgraphics and graphical organizers in non-journalistic writing can improve the
clarity, effectiveness, and engagement of the content. Also, they make the content meaningful and
impactful for readers.

Lesson 4: Extracting Significant Information

Topic - refers to the general subject matter or theme being dsicussed in the text. It is usually expressed
in a word or short phrase.

A main idea - pertains to the central point or message that the authors want to convey about the topic.
Moreover, supporting details - are specific bits of information, evidence, examples, or explanation
presented in order to make the main idea clearer and understood by the readers.
