Making An Image of The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index

The document outlines the process of creating a Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) image using MultiSpec Software, which involves utilizing red and near-infrared bands to quantify vegetation. It provides a step-by-step guide on data transformation, image formatting, and the final visualization of NDVI results. Key references and data sources, including USGS Earth Explorer, are also included.

Abstract—Utilizing MultiSpec Software to create an NDVI

(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) image.

I. INTRODUCTION
• This photograph's green vegetation quantity is expressed
using a mathematical combination of the red and near-
infrared bands.
• The formula : NDVI=NIR-RED/NIR+RED
• Red corresponds to the red channel or band, while NIR
stands for the near-infrared channel or band. The result
obtained from this equation typically falls within a scale
of -1 (usually indicating water) to +1 (indicating robust
vegetation growth).
II. DATA SOURCE
• USGS Earth Explorer
III. MAKING AN NDVI IMAGE
• Start Multispectral Software. Fig. 2. Data transformation and formula apply.
• Pick Open Image from the File menu. As illustrated in Fig.
1, a dialog box will open, and the photos will be inserted.

• Fig. 2 shows how an algebraic combination is now
expressed :
• NDVI = O+1.OC3-1.OC2 /1.OC2+1.OC3 *1
• To confirm the provided algebraic transformation, press
the OK button. This will cause the "Set Reformat
Transform Parameters" dialog box to close, returning you
to the "Image File Format Change" window. You can then
navigate back to the "Options" dialog box at the top.
• Choose “32-bit Real” from the Data value type popup
menu in the “Image File Format Change Options” dialog
box, as illustrated in Fig. 3

Fig. 1. adding an image.

• In the dialog box for configuring display settings, press

the OK button to add the image.
• the Processor - Reformat - Change option file format for
images.
• Then choose Transform data.
• Choosing "Create a New Channel Using General
Algebraic Transformation" will open the window shown
in Figure 2 below.
Fig. 3. Data value.
• Save the image, and afterward, utilize the "Open Dialog IV. RESULTS
Box" to retrieve the saved image.
• As seen in Figures 4 and 5, choose Type 1 - channel
thematic image and Type 1 - channel grayscale.

• When you choose OK, the outcome will be shown.

• Now select Palette ¡ MODIS NDVI and result will be
displayed.
