Parts of Speech

Definition:
Parts of speech are categories of words based on their function in a
sentence. Each word in a sentence plays a specific role and fits into one of the
eight main parts of speech.

There are 8 Parts of Speech:

1. Noun – Names a person, place, thing, or idea.


Example: Teacher, city, book, freedom
2. Pronoun – Replaces a noun.
Example: He, she, it, they
3. Verb – Expresses action or state of being.
Example: Run, think, is, are
4. Adjective – Describes or modifies a noun or pronoun.
Example: Happy, three, red
5. Adverb – Modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb.
Example: Quickly, very, often
6. Preposition – Shows a relationship between a noun/pronoun and another
word.
Example: In, on, at, under
7. Conjunction – Joins words, phrases, or clauses.
Example: And, but, because
8. Interjection – Expresses strong emotion.
Example: Wow!, Ouch!, Hurray!

Pronoun

Definition:
A pronoun is a word that is used in place of a noun to avoid repetition and
make sentences clearer and more concise. Pronouns are used to refer to people,
things, or places without naming them explicitly each time.

For example:

 Sarah is a doctor. She works at the city hospital.


("She" is a pronoun replacing "Sarah")

Kinds of Pronuns with Examples

Here are the main types of pronouns:


1. Personal Pronoun

It is used to refer to a specific person or thing.

Subject Object Possessive


I me my/mine
You you your/yours
He him his
She her her/hers
It it its
We us our/ours
They them their/theirs

Examples:

 I am going to the market.


 They are playing football.
 Give it to her.

2. Demonstrative Pronoun

It is used to point to specific things or people.

Common Demonstrative Pronouns:

 This, That, These, Those

Examples:

 This is my book.
 Those are your shoes.
 That is amazing!

3. Indefinite Pronoun

It is used to refer to people or things in a general or non-specific way.

Common Indefinite Pronouns:

 Someone, Everyone, Anyone, No one


 Something, Everything, Anything, Nothing
 Many, Few, Several, All, Some

Examples:
 Someone is at the door.
 Few know the answer.
 Everything is ready.

4. Reflexive Pronoun

Reflexive Pronoun refers back to the subject of the sentence and ends in -
self or -selves.

Reflexive Pronouns:

 Myself, Yourself, Himself, Herself, Itself


 Ourselves, Yourselves, Themselves

Examples:

 She made it herself.


 I hurt myself while playing.
 They introduced themselves.

5. Possessive Pronoun

It shows ownership or possession.

Possessive Pronouns:

 Mine, Yours, His, Hers, Its, Ours, Theirs

Examples:

 This bag is mine.


 Is that book yours?
 The house is theirs.

6. Relative Ponoun

It is used to introduce a subordinate clause and connects it to a noun.

Common Relative Pronouns:

 Who, Whom, Whose, Which, That

Examples:

 The boy who won the race is my friend.


 This is the book that I borrowed.

7. Interrogative Pronoun
It is used used to ask questions.

Common Interrogative Pronouns:

 Who, Whom, Whose, Which, What

Examples:

 Who is at the door?


 What is your name?

8. Reciprocal Pronoun

It is used used to indicate a mutual relationship.

Reciprocal Pronouns:

 Each other, One another

Examples:

 They helped each other.


 We must respect one another.

Adjective

Definition:
An adjective is a word that describes or modifies a noun or pronoun. It
provides more information about an object's size, shape, age, color, origin, or
material.

Example:

 The blue sky is beautiful.


 She adopted a small dog.

Types of Adjectives

1. Descriptive Adjective

Definition: It describes the quality, color, shape, or size of a noun.

Examples:

 The tall man entered the room.


 She wore a red dress.
2. Numeral Adjective

Definition: It indicates number or order of nouns.

Subtypes:

 Cardinal: One, two, three, etc.


 Ordinal: First, second, third, etc.

Examples:

 He has three brothers. (Cardinal)


 She came first in the race. (Ordinal)

3. Possessive Adjective

Definition: It shows ownership or possession.

Examples:

 That is my book.
 We visited their house.

4. Proper Adjective

Definition: It is formed from a proper noun; usually capitalized nouns.

Examples:

 I love Italian food. (from Italy)


 They enjoy Shakespearean drama. (from Shakespeare)

5. Interrogative Adjective

Definition: It is used to ask questions; modifies a noun.

Examples:

 Which book do you want?


 What color is your car?

6. Demonstrative Adjective

Definition: It points out specific nouns.

Examples:

 I like this shirt.


 Those apples are ripe.
7. Distributive Adjective

Definition: It refers to individual members of a group.

Examples:

 Each student must submit homework.


 Every child needs care.

8. Quantitative Adjective

Definition: It describes how much or how many of something.

Examples:

 He has some money.


 She drank little water.
