ASSIGNMENT -1

[Measuring parameters]

SOLUTION

1. A voltmeter is used for measuring an output of an instrument having an accuracy of ±2% of full
scale output. If the voltmeter indicates 10V in its linear range scale of 0V to 50V then find out
the error of readings.
2. If the above instrument’s true output is 100V and the measuring voltmeter indicates 104V,
103V, 105V, 103V and 105V after several attempt of measurement then find out the accuracy
and reproducibility error of the voltmeter.
3. A voltmeter reads 152V for a particular measurement, If the true value of the measurement is
154V, determine the percentage of static relative error and static correction.
4. List and explain any Five Static characteristics parameters of the measuring system.
5. A load cell is a transducer used to measure weight. A calibration record table is given below.
Determine (a) accuracy, (b) hysteresis and (c) linearity of the transducer. If we assume that the
true output has a linear relationship with the input and the full scale output of the load cell is
20mV.
To determine the Linearity use three methods and plot the curve for each method: End point
straight line method, Independent straight line method and best-fit straight line method

Solution:

1. The instrument having absolute error is ±2% x 50V (i.e Full scale output of the voltmeter) = 1V

Therefore, the voltage being measured in the range of 10±1V

Now the relative error of the current measurement is and
percentage of limiting error is 10%

2. The true output of the instrument is 100V and the measured values are 104V, 103V, 105V,103V,
105V.

So, the accuracy would be the possible range of error deviation (true value measured value)
where the error values could be fit. Here the maximum and minimum error values are 5V and
3V respectively. In order to define the identical error band in either side of the true value, we
can express the accuracy as ±5V or .

Reproducibility error can be defined by precision of the instrument. Precision is the band of
deviation of measurement readings among the set of measurement data. Therefore, from the
set of measurement data an average value should be estimated first. Here the average value is
104V.

Now, Precision = Maximum limit of the error band = Max = 1V

The instrument precision of the instrument is better than the accuracy.
