and pigtails are included. The
MGC junction box is often

2.5 Network security

Equipment manufactured by Kongsberg Seatex AS is frequently connected to local
area networks (LAN). Connecting any computer to a network will always expose the
data on that computer to all other computers connected to the same network. Several
threats may immediately occur:
• Remote computers can read the data.
• Remote computers can change the data.
• Remote computers can change the behaviour of the computer, for example by
installing unwanted software.
Usually, two parameters are used to define the threat level:
1 The likelihood that any remote connection will do any of the above.
2 The damage done if a remote connection succeeds doing this.
Because Kongsberg Seatex AS has no information regarding the complete system
installation at a location, we can not estimate the threat level and the need for network
security. For this reason, we can not accept responsibility for network security. Systems
provided by Kongsberg Seatex AS are regarded as stand-alone offline systems, even
though they may be connected to a network for sensor interfaces and/or data distribution.
Note
No network safety applications are installed on any Kongsberg Seatex computers. The
computers are thus not protected against viruses, malware or unintentional access from
external users.

Securing the system itself has no meaning unless there is a policy in place that secures all
computers in the network. This policy must include physical access by trained and trusted
users. The customer/end user of the system will always be in charge of defining and
implementing a security policy, and providing the relevant network security applications.

3.1.3 Necessary tools and equipment

We assume that you are equipped with a standard set of tools. This tool set must comprise
the normal tools for electronic and electromechanical tasks, such as screwdrivers,
pliers, spanners, a cable stripper etc. Each tool must be provided in various sizes. We
recommend that all tools are demagnetized to protect your equipment.
Unless stated otherwise, all mounting equipment (such as bolts, nuts, washers, screws
etc.) referred to within this document is to be supplied by the customer or the shipyard.
A PC with Windows 10 installed is required.

3.1.4 MGC JB7 junction box location

When installing the junction box, consider the following:
• The MGC JB7 junction box is meant for mounting within a cabinet. Mount the
junction box in the cabinet within range of the 3–metre cable to the sensor unit.

10 MRU-D-213/1.0
Installation

3.2 Mounting of the junction box

Procedure
1 Mount the MGC JB7 junction box in a cabinet within range of the 3–metre cable to
the sensor unit, as shown in the figure below.

Figure 1 MGC JB7 junction box with mounting holes on the sides

Figure 2 MGC JB7 junction box with mounting holes on top and bottom

2 Secure the screws for mounting the junction box with washers or self-locking nuts.

MRU-D-213/1.0 11
MRU

How to carry out the electrical installation with JB7 junction box
1 Insert the connector on the MRU-E-CS8 cable into the sensor unit and insert the
other end of the cable into the junction box terminals marked J11a and J11b.

2 Terminate the power cables on the terminals marked J10a and J10b.

3 Terminate the data cables for COM4 input/output, COM5 output, PPS input and
Ethernet to the correct J1 terminals. Also terminate the data cables for COM1,
COM2 and COM3 input/output signals to the correct J1 terminals.

4 Terminate the data cables for relay signals to the correct J6 terminals (upper part).
Terminate the data cables for ready signal and analog outputs to the correct J6
terminals (lower part).

12 MRU-D-213/1.0
Installation

If a ready signal for the analog output signals is required, insert the ship cable wires
for this signal into the terminals on J6 (lower part). This is done by feeding +24
V DC into RL3_C (R3–C) pin and running a wire back into the host system from
RL3_NO (R3–NO) pin. This will give the host system a +24 V DC signal from
R3L_NO (R3–NO) pin when analog output signals are ready.

5 Terminate the data cables for replica outputs to the correct terminals J2 to J5.
The MRC+ is used for configuration of the output on these replica ports. In MRC+
you select which COM port (COM1 to COM8) to be replicated at preferred replica
port. For each replica port the signal is available on three terminals (RXA, RXB and
RXC where X is the replica port number).

6 Ensure that the cable shields are in contact with the cable glands for grounding
before the cable is fastened to the box. Use the required number of clips to fasten
the cables to the wall.
Note
Cable with shield has to be used in order to fulfil the sensor unit power and EMC
requirements. The cable shield must be connected to ground in both ends.

7 When all cable wires are connected, apply power to the connection box.

MRU-D-213/1.0 13
MRU

8 If the LED on the sensor unit is lit, the installation is now finished, unless the
standard configuration delivered with the sensor unit needs to be modified for the
specific installation.

3.3 Relays
The MGC junction box has three relays: RL1, RL2 and RL3B. They are 60 Volt, 1 A
solid state relays, with form C contacts (NO-C-NC). RL1 and RL2 for BAM. Normal
state of the relays is inactivated.
• Relay 1 (RL1). Alarm Led. Is activated when invalid heading.
• Relay 2 (RL2). Alarm Buzzer. Is activated when invalid heading.
• Relay 3 (RL3). Power Good Indicator. Is activated when only one of the two 24
Volt power inputs are missing.

3.4 RS-422 A and B signal definition

According to the following standard the signal state definitions are:
• IEC 61162-1. The idle, marking, logical 1, OFF or stop bit states are defined by a
negative voltage on line A with respect to line B. The active, spacing, logical 0, ON
or start bit states are defined by a positive voltage on line A with respect to line B.
It should be noted that the above A with respect to B levels are inverted from the
voltage input/output requirements of standard UARTs and that many line drivers
and receivers provide a logic inversion.

3.5 Connecting IEC 61162-1 and IEC

61162-2 devices
IEC 61162-1 devices does not require a signal ground (Common) connection, and could
be connected to the TxA-/TxB+ and RxA-/TxB+ pairs only.
IEC 61162-2 requires a common signal ground between devices, hence the Common
signal must be terminated in both ends. MGC JB7 connections does not use the cable
shield as a conductor, hence the common signal ground should be connected to a separate
conductor. The common connector should be connected to the GND connector on the
selected port.
The report rate for the THS message 61162-2 devices should be set to 20 ms/50 Hz to
comply with ISO 8728.
A serial device should be connected to the Tx and Rx pair and GND signal (see 61162-1
description above). For a listen only devices, connection to the Tx pair and GND is
sufficient.

14 MRU-D-213/1.0
Installation

Cable shield should always be connected to equipment chassis in the sender end.
