HOW TO START SEWING : ASSEMBIL

While commercial sewing patterns often come with their own sewing instructions, they can sometimes be
quite hard to understand, especially if you are new to sewing. For this reason, it is common for a sewer to refer
to other books and tutorials to try to make sense of the sewing method. If you are a new sewer trying to put
together a garment from a commercial sewing pattern, you may face a common obstacle: the illustrations in
the sewing book that you have don’t match the shape and markings on your sewing pattern. It can then be very
difficult and confusing to learn how to sew a detail correctly if you are using a pattern that doesn’t match the
instructions. For example, the amount of seam allowance may be different on your pattern when compared to
the sewing book instructions.

To overcome this problem, this printable PDF is filled with patterns that you can use to carry out the sewing
exercises in Part 5. That way, whenever you want to learn a new skill, you can trace off the patterns, cut out
your fabric and then follow along with the sewing instructions step by step. In this way, you will be able to
understand different methods and learn how particular details are constructed. Note that when you come
across the same finishes and details in commercial sewing patterns, they may still be slightly different - there
are many different ways to sew the same detail. However, once you learn how to sew a detail once, you are in
a much better position to understand other variations of the same technique.

This PDF is the same as Part 7 contained inside the book How To Start Sewing and contains all of the pattern
pieces that you will need to carry out the sewing exercises in Part 5. The patterns shown here can be printed
on A4 size paper, or thin card to provide more durable and reusable templates. We recommend you print the
patterns on a “grayscale” setting. Check that they are printed at the right size by printing the first page of this
PDF with the 10 x 10 cm test square. The patterns should be printed at 100% (not fit to page).

Note that some of the patterns are only half-size patterns and these patterns will need to be traced in full
before you can complete some of the sewing exercises. Instructions on how to turn a half-size pattern into a
full-size pattern are shown in Exercise 20.02 of How To Start Sewing.

You may also like to use these sample patterns if you are making your own patterns, or to alter the details on
commercial sewing patterns. We have briefly discussed adapting patterns to incorporate modified details as
part of Exercise 47.02.

Fair Usage of the Patterns

Please note that we politely ask that you don’t share the PDF with other sewers, but instead direct them to the
relevant page on our website so that they can set up their own accounts and download their own copies. This
will help us to understand who is using the resources that we provide and enable us to create better resources
in the future.

If you are a teacher who wants to use the sample patterns in your class, then please use the PDFs in a way that
seems fair and appropriate to the proportion of books that you or your students have purchased. By operating
on this honesty system we hope to keep as many resources as possible at affordable prices for use at home
and for educating others.
