Q. 1 Design a Tension member consisting of a pair of angles and connected by their short legs to the same side of a gusset plate. The member is to carry a pull of 200 kN. Q. 2 Design a Tension member using two angles back to back on the same side of 12 mm thick gusset plate to carry a tensile force of 330 kN. The length of the member from center to center of intersection is 3.6 m. Assume the member is connected to gusset plate by 20 mm diameter bolts. Q. 3 Design a single angle section for a Tension member of a roof truss to carry a pull of 200kN.The member is subjected to possible reversal of stress due to action of wind. The length of the member from center to center of intersection is 3.5 m. Q. 4 A tie of roof truss of effective length of 2.3 m consists of 2ISA 100 x 75 x 10 mm. The angles are placed back to back on opposite sides of gusset plate connected with longer legs by weld. Calculate the % change of strength of tie in axial tension if the pair of angles are placed on same side of gusset plate. Q. 5 A tension member consisting of pair of angles is to carry a pull of 300 kN Connected to a gusset plate by their short legs. i) Design the section if the angles are connected on the same side of gusset plate ii) Design the section if the angles are connected to each side of gusset plate Q. 6 Design a double angle tension member to carry 600 kN force. Use two angles and connect them on either side of the gusset plate with longer legs. Thickness of gusset plate is 12 mm. length of the member is 3.3 m. Q. 7 Design a tension member consisting of a pair of angles and connected by the short legs to the same side of gusset plate to carry a pull of 290 kN.
Compression Member
Q. 8 Design a single angle discontinuous strut to carry 120 kN load. The length of the strut between centre to centre of intersection is 3.25 m. Q. 9 Design a top rafter member of roof truss subjected to net force of 120 kN( Comp) under DL + LL and a force of 80 kN (tension) under DL + WL condition . center to center distance between purlins is 1.45 m. Design welded connection with end gusset plate also. Draw neat sketch of connection. Q. 10 Design a discontinuous strut for a 360 kN force using two angles on the each side of a 16 mm thick gusset plate. The length of member for center to center of intersection is 4.2m. The length of member for center to center of intersection is 3.6 m. due to change in wind direction the member is subjected to 250 kN tensile force hence checks for reversal of stresses. Assume welded connection. Q. 13 Design a double angle strut to carry a compressive force of 500 kN using two angles on the each side of a 12 mm thick gusset plate. The length of member for center to center of intersection is 3.6m. Assume welded connection. Q. 14 Design a truss member to carry a compressive force of 300 kN. The length of member for center to center of intersection is 3.6m. Check the section for reversal of stresses for 300 kN Tension also. Q. 15 Design a double angle discontinuous strut to carry an axial load of 200 kN. The length of member for center to center of intersection is 4.2m.
Beams
Q. 19 Design a beam of effective span 6 m and subjected to bending moment 105 kN-m for the condition when the beam is encased in concrete. Q. 20 A simply supported beam is to support a udl of 100 kN/m excluding self weight over a clear span of 8 m. The compression flange of beam is laterally restrained. Design a plated rolled steel beam with ISMB 500 & 10 mm thick plates. Q. 21 Find the load carrying capacity (as udl) of ISMB 450 used as a simply supported beam over an effective span of 3.6 m. Assume the beam is laterally supported. Q. 22 Design a built up beam to support uniformly distributed load 50 kN/m over an effective span of 9.2 m along with a mid span concentrated load of 100 kN. Assume the beam is laterally supported. Q. 23 Design rolled steel I section for a simply supported beam with a clear span of 7m. It carries a udl of 40 kN per meter exclusive of self weight of the girder. The beam is laterally unsupported. Check the beam against web crippling and web buckling also. Design the bearing plate at the support. Q. 24 Design rolled steel I section for a simply supported beam with a clear span of 8m. It carries a udl of 60 kN per meter exclusive of self weight of the girder. The beam is laterally unsupported. Check the beam against web crippling and web buckling also. Design the bearing plate at the support. Q. 25 Design a simply supported plated rolled steel beam section to carry a udl 70 kN/m inclusive of self weight of beam. The effective span of beam is 10m. The depth of beam should not be more than 500 mm. The beam is laterally supported. Q. 26 A beam of effective span of 12 m carry an udl 80 kN/m inclusive of its own weight. Design the section if only 12 mm thick plates are available. Assume that the beam is laterally restrained.
Plate Girder
Q.27 Design a plate girder over an effective span of 20 m to carry an udl 120 kN/m along with a concentrated load of 200 kN at the mid span. Assume that it is laterally supported. Design Intermediate vertical stiffener also. Q.28 Design a economical plate girder over an effective span of 20 m, carries a live load of 100 kN/m longer than the span. Design the plate girder completely, Assuming that it is effectively supported in lateral dimension. Show the detailed drawing. Q. 29 A simply supported welded plate girder has an effective span of 25 m . It carries a udl of 40 kN/m. i) Design the maximum section of welded plate girder ii) Design the suitable welded connection between the web and the flange. iii) Design the end bearing and Intermediate stiffeners for the girder including their connection to the web.
Built- up Column
Q. 30 Design a built up column 10m long to carry an axial load of 750 kN. The column is restrained in position but not in direction at both the ends. Provide single lacing system with riveted connection. Use two channels placed back to back. Q. 31 Design a economical built up column to carry an axial load of 1400 kN using two channels. The unsupported length of column is 6m.both ends are held in position and only one end is restrained against rotation. Design a suitable lacing system. Q. 32 Design a built up column to support 1200 kN axial load. The length of column is 8m. The column is fixed at both ends. Also design a suitable lacing system for the column. Q. 33 Design a column to support 200 kN using four angles. The length of column is 6.4 m and both ends are held in position and only one end is restrained against rotation. Design suitable battens also. Q. 34 Design a built up column consisting of two channels connected by battens to carry an axial load of 1000 kN. The length of column is 10m. The column is hinged at both ends. Design suitable battens also.
Slab base
Q. 35 Design a slab base for an ISHB 250 carrying an axial load of 700 kN. The allowable bearing stress in concrete is 4 Mpa. The safe bearing capacity of soil is 200 kN/ m2. Q. 36 Design a slab base for an ISHB 450 carrying an axial load of 1000 kN. The allowable bearing stress in concrete is 5 Mpa. The safe bearing capacity of soil is 200 kN/ m2.
Gusseted base
Q. 37 Design a gusseted base for an ISHB 450 carrying an axial load of 1200 kN. The allowable bearing stress in concrete is 4 Mpa. The safe bearing capacity of soil is 160 kN/ m2. Q. 38 Design a gusseted base for an ISMB 450 carrying an axial load of 1000 kN. The allowable bearing stress in concrete is 4 Mpa. The safe bearing capacity of soil is 100 kN/ m2. Q. 39 A column section ISHB 300 @0.63 kN/m with one cover plate 400 mm x 20 mm on either side is carrying an axial load of 3000 kN inclusive of self weight of base and column. Design a gusseted base. The allowable bending pressure in concrete is 4 N/mm2.The allowable bending stress in base plate is 185 mPa
Eccentric Connection
Q. 40 A ISMB 500 @ 0.869 kN/m transmit an end reaction of 130 kN and an end moment of 120 kn-m to the flange of a column ISHB 250 2 0.510 kN/m. design the welded connection. Q. 41 A ISMB 400 @ 0.616 kN/m transmit an end reaction of 300 kN to the flange of a column ISHB 400. @ 0.774 kN/m. design the welded connection.
