Systems of Linear Equations: Two Equations Containing Two Variables

A system of linear equations consists of two or more linear equations with the same variables, and solutions can be found using methods such as substitution, elimination, or graphing. The document provides detailed steps for solving a specific system of equations using both the elimination and substitution methods, resulting in the solution set (1, 2). Additionally, it outlines the graphical method for finding solutions by determining intercepts and graphing the equations.

SYSTEMS OF LINEAR EQUATIONS:

TWO EQUATIONS CONTAINING

TWO VARIABLES
WHAT IS A SYSTEM OF LINEAR
EQUATIONS?
A system of linear equations is two or more linear equations with
the same variables. The solution of a system of linear equations is
the point of intersection of the lines representing the equations.
This can be determined algebraically or graphically. The algebraic
solution may be done by elimination or substitution.

A system of equations is composed of a set of two or more

equations and a system consisting of linear equations is called a
linear system. There are different ways in finding the common
solution set for a linear system of two equations in two variables.
One may use addition or subtraction method, substitution method,
and graphical method.
Methods for Solving a System

1. Substitution method
2. Elimination method
3. Graphical method
Elimination
Example1:
Solve the system by addition or subtraction.

2x + y = 4 equation 1
2x + 3y = 8 equation 2

Addition method is used if the variables to be

eliminated have same coefficients but with different
signs. Whereas , subtraction is used if the variables to
be eliminated have the same coefficients and signs.
Elimination
Steps to solve:
1. To eliminate x multiply both sides of equation 1 by -1.
-(2x + y = 4)
2x + 3y = 8
2y= 4
2 2
y =2
2. Substitute the value of y to equation 1 to solve for x, using
equation 1,
2x + y = 4
2x + 2 = 4
2x = 4 - 2
2x = 2
2 2
x= 1
THEREFORE , THE SOLUTION SET IS THE ORDERED PAIR ( 1, 2)
Substitution
Solve the system of equations using substitution method
2x + y = 4
2x + 3y = 8
Steps to solve:

1. Solve for x in terms of y or vice versa using the given

equations.
Using equation 1, we solve for the equated value of x
2x + y = 4
2x= 4 - y
2
x = 4-y
2
Substitution
2. Substitute the equated value of x to equation 2
2x + 3y = 8
2 ( 4-y ) + 3y = 8
2
4 - y + 3y = 8
2y = 8 - 4
2
y= 2

3. Substitute y = 1 in any of the original equations given.

Substituting to equation 1
2x + y = 4
2x + 2 = 4
2x = 4- 2
2
x= 1

THEREFORE, THE SAME WITH ADDITION METHOD, THE SOLUTION SET IS THE
OREDERED PAIR ( 1, 2)
Graphical
Steps to follow:

1. To solve using graphical method find x intercept and y

intercept of each equations
to be able to have two points of the line of each equation.
Solving for the intercept is assuming that the value of y= 0 in x-
intercept and the value of x= 0 in y-intercept
For equation 1: 2x + y = 4 x-intercept (2,0)
y-intercept (0,4)
For equation 2: x - 2y=7 x-intercept (7,0)
y-intercept (0, -3 1/2 ) OR (0, -3.5)
Note : if there are fractions convert it to decimals
Graphical
2. Then graph the lines of each equation in a single rectangular
coordinate plane.

THE INTERSECTION OF THE

LINES AT ( 3,-2) IS THE SOLUTION
OF EQUATIONS 2x + y = 4 and x -
2y = 7

EQUATION 2

EQUATION 1
