Spring semester 2022/2023

Opening seminar (2nd attempt): Wed, Oct 9, 18:00; https://videosild.emu.ee/b/vel-bvd-il1-wvu

If you have started work and understand how to go on, you do not have to participate. Welcome, if you want to.

Dear students,
welcome to the course of English language structures, based on Pearson publishers’
MyGrammarLab book and online platform by M. Foley, D. Hall, available at Krisostomus, Raekoja
plats 11.

In the spring semester 2023/2024 we start with 1 group - CEFR language levels B2. To participate,
you’ll need the book (with key) and willpower to motivate working independently, as the main aim
of the course is to give you practice on planning your activities, thinking about what you do, and
why that would be reasonable for you (i.e. noticing how you learn, and being a meta-learner. Btw, why is
there a comma before ‘and’?).
You’ll learn lots of English in the process, as indicated in one student’s feedback:
“Actually, I just needed the credit points, but ended up learning something as well.”

So, to start with, you need to

1) buy the book and activate the access key on the inside of the cover (the ‘how-to’ according
to the instructions there).
2) start a personal Portfolio that can be linked here (see below, gdocs, some kind of personal
cloud etc).
3) draw up a weekly schedule (timeline, timetable) for your work, considering your other
studies and social life. You’ll have to cover Modules 12 - 20 and Grammar for FCE & PET.
(further information below)
NB! I’ll do pre-mid semester check and mid-semester check to make sure no-one’s lost. If
there’s no activity in your Portfolio, you’ll be deleted from the list in ÕIS.
pre-mid semester: Feb. 13
mid-semester: March 31
4) for each Module and the FCE and PET, write Reflections
NB! The language level is indicated on the cover of the book:

B2 works with
Process and participants for B2:
1. Each Module is focused on a specific topic.

You’ll have to cover Modules 12 - Grammar for FCE & PET, in your order of preference.
Draw up a weekly plan/timetable/schedule for the Modules/topics. It’s absolutely ok to start
from 12 and finish with Grammar for PET, just like that. I’ll check Feb. 13 if you have started
(if not, send an e-mail to me, explaining why) - if you haven’t, and have sent no e-mail, you
will be removed from the list in ÕIS. Progress check is scheduled for March 31. Once again,
if you have issues, send me an e-mail. Think about when you are really busy (tests, practical
training, personal issues, whatever) and when you can do more. It’s not ‘cast in stone’, you
can change it (provided you’re ready by mid-May). Explain briefly why you planned your
work this way - even if it’s just
‘I decided to start from Module 12 and work to FCE and PET, because I have no specific preferences’.

2. The plan is the first entry in your Portfolio. The Portfolio has to be linked to this gdocs after
your name in the list of participants below. If you participated in autumn (B1), just go on with
your portfolio, but paste it here (Table below) again.
The Portfolio comprises: intro - a couple of words on why you think you need the course; 1.
plan/schedule; 2. screenshots from your Gradebook with at least the first and the last with
the timestamp, see below); 3. Reflections on the Module (further info item 5 below); 4. the
five phrases from the Module that you’d like to remember.
3. You need to do Practice Exercises 1, 2 and all Tests (incl Diagnostic, Progress and Exit) of
each Unit of the Modules, and all exercises for FCE and PET.

Of course you can do more (like pronunciation exercises, which are quite fun), and the
Catch-up exercises, if you are not happy with your results of the Unit/Module. Grammar
videos help a lot, not only for understanding grammar items, but also as a listening (and
fluency) practice.

4. Paste a screenshot from your Gradebook to your Portfolio for each Module (or Unit) to
indicate that you’ve done the task.
Or, if your Gradebook does not seem to ‘activate’, you’ll get the results for the screenshot
from the ‘Report’ section,
Mine looked like that, so obviously I’m not too happy and need to have another try :) : NB!
at least the first and the last activity have to show the timestamp (your name on the left, date
on the right).

My Gradebook for the course (yours looks somewhat like that, and notice the ‘ticks’ you
have to mark for the different types of tasks to be displayed).

5. Reflections are your thoughts on what you did (=which modules and topics), why you did
just these tasks (have you noticed you’re making mistakes in these constructions? do you
feel you’ve forgotten it because you haven’t used the constructions? etc), did it go as you
expected? (maybe you thought you are not good at it, but actually were - or vice versa etc),
what else you need to do? what did you learn about yourself as a learner? [which might
be tricky - for example I discovered I must not check ‘hints’, as I remember the word I
offered and the hint, but do not remember which one was correct… :( very annoying!)
6. At least 5 phrases per Module that you would like to remember (with translations, if you
want to, that’s not a ‘must’).

In the autumn semester 2023/2024 we start with 2 groups - CEFR

same book). To participate, you’ll need the book (with key) and

feedback:
“Actually, I just needed the credit points, but ended up learning something as well.”
and this year:
↬ When you start doing these exercises, it's very contagious. You do some and then you
do more and more. After a few hours, you will find that 1 hour of exercise suddenly became
5 hours.
↬ It was good practice and a humbling experience.
↬ One thing which I like about this course is you ask us to plan and execute. Giving
us the freedom and control of our own actions. It is a skill to develop and should
use it everywhere not only in this course.

↬↬ Register and ‘login’ has become more ‘complicated’:

www.mygrammarlab.com takes you here:

and you’ll proceed from the left, ‘Learners’:

So, to start with, you need to
5) buy the book, register the ‘product’ and log in. Use your real data
(your name and the institution).
6) start a personal Portfolio to be linked here (see below, any format
that can be linked).
7) c1 Modules: Prover 1actice Exercises 1, 2 and all Tests (incl

showing the best results (which are

about what you do, understanding how
much you know already and how you could
improve your skills.

Dear students,
➽ update for the courses, 13 Dec 2022:
I’ve got several emails indicating the tasks have been finished - protocols updated
accordingly. This is not a must (= an email about your progress), but if you need the ‘pass’
protocol fast, please let me know. The next deadline is Christmas, and then 30 Jan - if you
need the result for this semester (autumn 2022).
I’m in Germany and the replies to your emails will be somewhat sporadic till 18 Dec. Sorry,
and please bear with me!

You’ll learn lots of English in the process, as indicated in one student’s
feedback:
“Actually, I just needed the credit points, but ended up learning something
as well.”

So, to start with, you need to

17) buy the book
18) start a personal Portfolio to be linked here (see below).
19) cover 11 Modules: Practice Exercises 1, 2 and all Tests (incl
Diagnostic, Progress and Exit) of each Unit of the Module
20) draw up a weekly schedule (timeline, timetable) for yourself,
considering your other studies and social life.
NB! I’ll do pre-mid semester check and mid-semester check to
make sure no-one’s lost. If there’s no activity in your Portfolio,
you’ll be deleted from the list in ÕIS.
pre-mid semester: October 2 (to be completed this week, Oct. 15)
mid-semester: November 6
21) for each Module, write Reflections
22) choose at least 5 phrases you’d like to remember from each
Module
23) find further instructions and the participants of your group from
below - B1 or C1.
24) NB! The language level is indicated on the cover of the book:

C1 works with

The objective of the course is not

showing the best results (which are
very welcome, of course), but thinking about what you
do, understanding how much you know already and how you
could improve your skills.

Process and participants for B1:

19. Each Module is focused on a specific topic.

You’ll have to cover Modules 1 - 11 (in your order of preference).

Draw up a weekly plan/timetable/schedule for the Modules/topics
in your order of preference, but it’s absolutely ok to go 1…11, just
like that. Think about when you are really busy and when you can
do more. It’s not ‘cast in stone’, you can change it (provided you’re
ready for Christmas!). Explain briefly why you planned your work
this way - even if it’s just ‘I decided to start from Module 1 and work to
Module 11, because I have no specific preferences’.
20. The plan is the first entry in your Portfolio. The Portfolio has to
be linked to this gdocs after your name in the list of participants
below.
The Portfolio comprises: 1. plan; 2. screenshots from your
Gradebook; 3. Reflections on the Module; 4. the five phrases from
the Module that you’d like to remember.
21. You need to do Practice Exercises 1, 2 and all Tests (incl
Diagnostic, Progress and Exit) of each Unit of the Modules.

Of course you can do more (like pronunciation exercises, which are

quite fun), and the Catch-up exercises, if you are not happy with
your results of the Unit/Module. Grammar videos help a lot, not only
for understanding grammar items, but also as a listening (and
fluency) practice.

22. Paste a screenshot from your Gradebook to your Portfolio for

each Module (or Unit) to indicate that you’ve done the task.
Or, if your Gradebook does not seem to ‘activate’, you’ll get the
results for the screenshot from the ‘Report’ section,

Mine looked like that, so obviously I’m not too happy and need to have another try :) :

My Gradebook for the course (yours looks somewhat like that, and notice the ‘ticks’ you
have to mark for the different types of tasks to be displayed).

23. Reflections are your thoughts on what you did (=which modules
and topics), why you did just these tasks (have you noticed you’re
making mistakes in these constructions? do you feel you’ve
forgotten it because you haven’t used the constructions? etc), did it
go as you expected? (maybe you thought you are not good at it,
but actually were - or vice versa etc), what else you need to do?
what did you learn about yourself as a learner? [which might be
tricky - for example I discovered I must not check ‘hints’, as I
remember the word I offered and the hint, but do not remember
which one was correct… :( very annoying!)
24. At least 5 phrases per Module that you would like to remember
(with translations, if you want to, that’s not a ‘must’).
The lists ofparticipan ts and the links are here, so that you can take a
look at what others have done - there surely are good ideas you’ll find
educating, useful or entertaining.

NB! IF your book is the ‘withOUT key’ version, let me know

([email protected]) and we’ll sort it out.
