 Generations of Computers

Learning Objectives

Learners will be able to,

1. Define the term "computer" and explain its evolution over time.
2. Explain the historical development of computers from early mechanical devices to
modern-day computing.
3. Identify and describe the five generations of computers, including key technologies and
characteristics.

E. Answer the following (page no:9 from book)

1. Write any one feature of UNIVAC- I.

Univac is the first computer to handle both numeric and text data.

2. Who invented Tabulating machine and when?

Tabulating machine was invented by Dr. Herman Hollerith in 1890s.

3. Write the full form of EDSAC and its features.

EDSAC – Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator.
Features:
1. EDSAC is the first electronic computer that used stored programs.
2. It is faster than ENIAC.

4. Write any two features of the machine invented by H.H. Aiken

Features of Mark I invented by H.H. Aiken are,
1. It is a first fully automatic digital computer
2. It is marked as the beginning of the era of modern computing
3. It is also known as automatic sequence-controlled calculator.

(1)
5. Differentiate between ENIAC and EDSAC.

ENIAC EDSAC
1. ENIAC stands for Electronic EDSAC stands for Electronic Delay
Numeric Integrator and Computer Storage Automatic Calculator
2. Slower than EDSAC Faster than ENIAC

Real life Connections

1. Hollerith's Tabulating Machine → Big Data & Government Use

• Used for the 1890 U.S. Census; today, data drives elections, city planning, and even
TikTok algorithms.
• Real Life: Students live in a world shaped by data—social media, targeted ads, search
results, etc.

2. UNIVAC Predicting the 1952 Election → Predictive Algorithms Today

• UNIVAC shocked the world by accurately predicting an election outcome.
• Real Life: Algorithms now predict shopping trends, weather, Netflix shows—using the
same concept of data forecasting.

National Identity Mark and cross curricular Link (Write your answers in less than
100 words)
