MODULE
PRECISION
STAGE 1: PRECISION
Objectives of This Lesson
Hey there!

The following are objectives and goals of this module. You may tick the box once
you have already achieved it.

1. Know your strengths, weaknesses, and skills through Ikigai.

In Lesson 1, Meeting Myself, you will be taking time to reflect on who you are,
what you can do, and what you can offer to the world. Yes, everyone is
unique and no matter who you are, you are good at something (even if you
think you don’t). You just need time to think and jot it down carefully.

2. Choose skill/s you can offer as a service.

You will be understanding what skill to offer as a service, which service to
choose, and what are the best ones to offer.

3. Choose your Ideal Client Avatar/s & understand how you’d be able to
help.
You will be learning what Ideal Client Avatar to serve and how you can best
help them with the skill you have (or will be acquiring). You will be
understanding more of who they are as a person so you can serve them
better and know how to address their objections later on in the next
modules.

4. Do basic research of your Skill/s of Focus and start learning the basics.
You will be given access to where you can do more research on your Skill of
Focus and learn the basics of it so you can put your skills into practice in
Module 2.

5. Create a Core Message.

You will learn how to position yourself as an expert with only one well-
formulated line.

Lesson one:

meeting myself (ikigai)

IMPORTANCE OF THIS LESSON:

In the world of business, you will be more effective and efficient to the people
you want to serve if you understand who you are and what you can offer. This is
best identified with the method I learned called Ikigai. This is a Japanese word
that means, “reason for being”. Knowing your Ikigai will also help you move
towards choosing the skill you want to offer with the help of the next few lessons.

“Your ikigai is at the intersection of what you are good at and what you love
doing,” says Hector Garcia, the co-author of Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long
and Happy Life.

He writes, “Just as humans have lusted after objects and money since the dawn
of time, other humans have felt dissatisfaction at the relentless pursuit of money
and fame, and have instead focused on something bigger than their own
material wealth. This has over the years been described using many different
words and practices, but always hearkening back to the central core of
meaningfulness in life.”
Source: https://medium.com/thrive-global/ikigai-the-japanese-secret-to-a-long-and-happy-life-might-just-help-you-live-a-more-fulfilling-9871d01992b7

In finding your Ikigai, all you have to do is answer the following questions:

What you love (your passion)

What the world needs (your mission)
What you are good at (your vocation)
What you can get paid for (your profession)

“Our intuition and curiosity are very powerful internal compasses to help us
connect with our ikigai,” Hector Garcia and Francesc Miralles write.

Copyright © 2020. Demi Bernice Eslit | Strive For Excellence

In answering, you might feel like this is the hardest task in the world because I
understand you have not gotten to a point in your life yet where you just sat
down and thought about yourself, who you are, and what you can do. I get it. But
now, this is your time to do exactly just that.

Sit down and get to know yourself better for you to better serve your clients. We
are here to serve them, but we wouldn’t know how if we do not understand who
we are.

Take a full 20 minutes (yes, you need a stopwatch for this) to simply think about
who you are as a person before even grabbing a pen to answer the worksheet.

Copyright © 2020. Demi Bernice Eslit | Strive For Excellence

Ask yourself common questions such as “What are my strengths? What are my
weaknesses?”

Here are some guide questions that can help you in answering your Ikigai
questions:

As far as your memory serves you, what were the things you enjoyed the
most as a kid? How about during your adolescent years? How about the
things you enjoyed during your adult life?

Did you have something you wanted to pursue but because of your
family’s financial situation, you decided to stop pursuing it?

Did people once tell you, “I don’t think it’s practical to pursue that.
You’re not going to make money off of that here in the Philippines.”

What was that one thing you did that wowed the people around you?

Sit back, close this workbook, and think about these questions first before
proceeding.

--------------------------------------- BREAK ---------------------------------------

See the diagram clearly:

PASSION + PROFESSION = Satisfaction, but you feel uselessness because often

you’re not really doing what you love.

PROFESSION + VOCATION = Comfortable, but you feel emptiness because often

you are earning well, but not really doing what you want to pursue.

VOCATION + MISSION = Excitement, complacency, but you feel a sense of

uncertainty because often you’re not sure if you are good at what you do and if
you can monetize it.

PASSION + MISSION = Delight and fullness, but no wealth.

The more items you can write down, the better you’d understand yourself. The
better you understand yourself, the better service you can offer. The better
service you can offer, the better reputation you’ll have with your clients. The
better reputation you’ll have with your clients, the higher you can charge AND
the more money you’re going to make.

Domino effect.

Please note that in answering the Ikigai, you’d need to focus and think about it
really well. You need to spend time on it. The more you spend time thinking
about who you are, the better answers you can have.

Remember, this is not a race. The better you understand about yourself, the
more you can help your clients, the better freelancing career you will have.

SOLUTION:
Write down your answers to all the four questions. The most recurring answer is
what’s closest to your Ikigai that you can find meaning while doing and creating
your wealth with it at the same time.

Think about the following. Your answers here will help you with your Ikigai.
1. What are your strengths?

Lesson two:

choosing a skill
Newbie and not sure what skill to offer? Multi-passionate? Not sure what skill is
highly in-demand? Here’s your answer!

IMPORTANCE OF THIS LESSON:

In making sure you stand out from other freelancers in the noisy world of the
internet, it is ideal that you become an authority and an expert in one skill and be
known for it.

I understand that it’s not easy to niche down, especially if you like to do a lot of
things just like me, but finding one specific niche you’re definitely good at and
you’re an expert at absolutely pays off big time.

Here are the benefits of choosing only one niche to work on.

NICHE = Skill of Focus + Ideal Client Avatar

Example: I am a packaging designer for eCommerce sellers.

1. You’ll be known for something.

If you’re just doing anything for anyone, most likely, no one will know exactly
what you do, thus, you will not stand out. From my experience, I’ve done videos,
websites, and graphics for anyone who needs it and tried to call myself the
‘Digital Media Person’. Since it’s too general and vague, I did not have any
specialty and I became a commodity. I became a person that people run to for
‘quick project turnarounds’ when their designer or video editor is booked out.
One day, I asked myself, ‘When will I ever be booked out?’ That’s when I realized
that a person who is known for something will easily attract clients. It’s your
brand screaming for itself with you only doing minimal work.

2. Referrals will come easily.

People know you do that specific thing for that specific type of people. Now, it’s
easier for them to recommend you to others. It reminds them of you when they
hear the word ‘graphic designer for entrepreneurs’ or social media managers for

Copyright © 2020. Demi Bernice Eslit | Strive For Excellence

female coaches’. It’s easy to let others know what you can do, and they can truly
understand that you can help them because you’ve done it for others.

3. You can charge higher.

If you’re an expert at something, it’s easier to charge high for it. No doubt. People
are willing to pay double for someone who has been doing it for others and you
don’t even need to explain that. It’s an automatic logical response that since you
were able to do that skill in that industry, they don’t see why you can’t do it for
them.

Lesson two - annex one:

how to choose a skill?

Here are some guide questions that can help you all throughout choosing a skill
to offer:

1. What’s that one thing that you really liked & enjoyed as a kid? Is it
something that you can translate to digital skills?

2. What skill, amongst what you have observed in the digital marketing
industry, interests you the most? Do you think you will enjoy learning
that?

3. Can you see yourself doing that skill for 2-5 more years?

4. Go back to your Ikigai and see if your strengths are related to a digital
skill.

Notice that I didn’t mention ‘money’ in any of those questions. That means,
whatever skill you do, if you understand that people need them & you can help
them fill that need, then you can make money out from it.

content for these platforms.

Oftentimes, this work entails you to create simple quote images, know when to
post according to your client’s social media insights, curate Instagram feeds,
write post description/photo captions, schedule social media content, & the likes.
This is also something a beginner can do easily since a lot of us have also been
doing this in our own social media platforms.

Note that Social Media Management is different from Social Media Marketing.
With Social Media Marketing, you are responsible for your client’s business sales
and money that he/she is making because your task is to drive traffic (sales) from
their social media platforms to their products/services. Social Media Marketing
definitely requires more marketing knowledge and advanced technical skills.
With Social Media Management, you are simply responsible for making sure their
platforms are used and have published content consistently.

3. Customer Service

You can help busy businesses answer their customers on an everyday basis.
Income wouldn’t be that high due to easy replaceability, but the work will be
consistent.

Lesson two - annex three:

the skills list

Please note that in choosing, you can either:

Have one Skill of Focus with multiple Ideal Clients.

Note that 1 Skill of Focus + Multiple Ideal Clients is fine, but NOT 1 Broad
Skill + Multiple Ideal Clients.

Example: I am a brand designer for Online Coaches and Digital Agency

Owners.

Have one Ideal Client with multiple Skills of Focus.

Note that if you choose to have multiple Skills of Focus, it has to be

relevant to the Ideal Client that you are serving. It can’t just be random
sets of skills.

Example: I create branding, website, and sales funnels for Online

Coaches.

For the multi-passionate, choose one skill to brand yourself with, but
tell your clients about your other skill sets during negotiations or after
each project transaction.

It is really important to have one you can brand yourself with so you
could be known for something.

Bearing the guide questions in Lesson Two-Annex One, you should be able to
easily find a skill that best fits you.

For beginners, use this lesson when you’re thinking about what skill you really
want to offer in the future WHILE already doing the Beginner Skills listed in
Lesson Two-Annex One.

For people with more experience, you can use this lesson to start building a
brand that you probably didn’t have before you enrolled.

Copyright © 2020. Demi Bernice Eslit | Strive For Excellence

Also know that you cannot go wrong with this. Move forward and do not be
stuck. Observe the industry for at least 6 months - 1 year. If within the entire 6
months - 1 year, your cash flow is still unstable, try finding a niche (meaning Skill
of Focus + Ideal Client Avatar) that is not very far from your previous one so you
don’t really need to start from 0, and you can still market to the client base you
built in your first freelancing year.

Lesson two - annex four:

what’s next?
Now that you have chosen a skill, it’s now time to do research about it AND learn
the basics (if you haven’t yet). Learning the basics is only what you need to go out
there to find your Work-For-Free Clients (which will be further discussed in the
next module).

Note that you do not need to become a master of the skill right away. You just
need to learn the basics (i.e., software functionalities (if you’re using softwares),
how to deliver client outputs (watermarking or password protecting your
deliverables))

Other advanced things on your skill are not needed at this moment. You will
learn best by doing, and that is why we’ll put your skill/s into practice in Module 2.

Here’s how you can learn the basics:

Commit to 1 hour every day for 60 days to learn the skill you want to
offer. NO EXCUSES. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Create a schedule as to what time of the day you can insert the
studying of your Skill/s of Focus. Make sure that this schedule is feasible
and it would work despite your schedule.

You may also use YouTube or other learning platforms to learn the
basics of your chosen skill.

Lesson three:

choosing your ideal client avatar

In the Skills List, you are probably thinking, “How would I know which Ideal Client
to serve?”

IMPORTANCE OF THIS LESSON:

Knowing who you are serving will allow you to help your Ideal Clients further and
customize services that they cannot say no to because you know they’d need it.
You’ll also learn how to negotiate with them well since you know what they
need, so it’s easier to make them say ‘yes’ during deals.

Now, go back to the Skills List again and review who are the people listed
under ‘Probable Ideal Clients Avatars’.

Now that it’s narrowed down to a small list under your chosen Skill of Focus, you
can use this lesson if you still are having a hard time choosing which one. Note
that all the things written in the Skills List and the Probable ICAs are already the
ones that are highly-in-demand and lucrative. Of course, the list can only go on,
and you may choose someone or something else outside the list, no problem.

Copyright © 2020. Demi Bernice Eslit | Strive For Excellence

REMEMBER, you should only follow these rules in choosing a skill or an ICA so
you wouldn’t have a hard time branding yourself. You can’t be everything for
everyone.

Please note that in choosing, you can either:

Owners.

2. Have one Ideal Client with multiple Skills of Focus.

Note that if you choose to have multiple Skills of Focus, it has to be

relevant to the Ideal Client that you are serving. It can’t just be random
sets of skills.

Example: I create branding, website, and sales funnels for Online

Coaches.

So make sure to remember that you can choose one Ideal Client if you wish to
have multiple skills or multiple Ideal Clients but strictly going with one skill.

Here are also some guide questions that can help you with choosing your Ideal
Client Avatar:

In the list of your probable ICAs, whose type of business do you have
basic knowledge of? The more you understand about this person’s
business, the more you’ll be able to help them.

Who among them do you aspire to be someday? You can learn

techniques from these people so you can also apply them in the future.

Do you follow people on social media that have the same kind of
business as them? They could be your ICA. Even if you do not
understand their business in itself, following people like them makes it
easier for you to observe and identify what exactly they need.

Copyright © 2020. Demi Bernice Eslit | Strive For Excellence

Are you a member of a Facebook Group that is full of them? They could
be your ICA. The more you surround yourself with people who exactly
have the same business/endeavor as them, the more you’d understand
how you can help them.

Things to remember when choosing your ICA:

You can’t screw this up. All you have to do is choose one in the
narrowed-down options under Skills List and look for FB Groups where
you can find them.

All of the people listed are already lucrative ICAs you can help. Hence,
stop thinking about which of them is the most lucrative.

Lesson three - annex one:

your ideal client avatar’s profile

In this lesson, you’ll be asked to fill out your Ideal Client Avatar profile so you’d
know and understand how to help your client better, and learn how to talk to
them in deals so they can’t say no to you.

If you don’t know how to answer this, go to the Facebook/LinkedIn Groups

where your Ideal Client Avatar is hanging out. Observe there every day for a
week to understand what they are posting and what they are struggling about.
Or, you can also post in the group and ask them what they’re struggling with so
you can get a swarm of responses that’ll help! You’ll then know who they are
and how you can help them.

Usually, problems involve sales and getting more customers, but it’s best if you
can also take note of other things that can help you identify their problems
during your discovery calls or negotiations.

One of the mentees asked me, “I always see post in the fb groups about authors’
especially the newbies having a difficult time in advertising their books, what
can I offer in order to help them?” Such good observation.

Here are some tips in answering:

Be as specific as possible. If you wish to put a stock photo for that

person’s ID, that’s great. Envision who that person really is so you’d
empathize with the person more, and you’ll be able to create his/her
image in your head. In that way, it’d also be easier for you to visualize
calls, deals, and even email exchanges because you have that one image
in your head floating when you think about your ICA.

Make sure their location also matches their income bracket. Ensure that
the amount they receive is enough for them to pay you as well.

Their interests should also interest you. If it doesn’t, at least learn what
interests them, so you’d know them better, hence you can create
services/projects that they’d like.

Be sure about where you can find them. Pinpoint the places where you
can find your ICA. It could either be online or offline.

Lesson four:

your core message

IMPORTANCE OF THIS LESSON:
Have you ever tried going out and being asked, “What do you do for a living?” It’s
easier to answer that question when you are employed, but when you are self-
employed, you’d have a hard time answering. Trust me. Of course, that is not
what the importance of this lesson is.

Your core message will allow you to position yourself as an expert without
anyone else’s permission. It is used by the client to identify if you are a good fit
for the project they’re needing help with without even looking at your work
just yet. You’d also have clarity on who you are and who you can help.

In the branding side of things, this is what people will know you for. Remember
the previous lessons where I asked you to pick a NICHE (Skill of Focus + Ideal
Client Avatar) and the strict terms and conditions we apply for the sake of
branding.

Now, you are to create a one-liner ‘mission statement’ so you can start popping
out as a brand.

Here’s how you can create your Core Message:

I help (ideal client avatar/s) achieve/have (promised result) through

(adjective) (my unique service)

Examples:

I help female online coaches have more sales & recurring customers
through effective social media marketing.

I help restaurateurs & hoteliers achieve their monthly customer quota

through exceptional customer service.

I help digital agency owners have a better streamlined working system

through systematic project management.

I help beach body coaches convert more sales through professional and
converting sales funnel designs.

I help food entrepreneurs have higher profit margins through eye-
catching and appealing packaging designs.

I help eCommerce sellers have more sales through striking apparel

designs.
Here are a couple of tips you can use in creating your Core Message:

You may use ‘achieve,’ ‘have,’ or other synonymous verbs that pertain to
the success of getting the results.

In writing your promised result, you can go back to the GOALS you
wrote under Client Pain Points & Vision. Whatever you put in there will
match perfectly with your Core Message.

Any positive adjective that describes your unique service (a.k.a Skill of
Focus) will do. Just do not forget to ensure that it’s grammatically correct
by having someone check it or by using Grammarly.

Identifying your ICA/s and Skill/s of Focus are already mentioned and
discussed in the previous module lessons.
