Assignment Module-5

The document is an assignment focused on quantitative techniques, specifically ANOVA, in experimental design and optimization. It includes questions on the effectiveness of different systems for oil spill cleanup, the impact of various promotions on sales, and the comparison of flashlight battery brands. Each question requires statistical analysis using specified significance levels and F-values to determine if there are significant differences among the groups tested.

QUANTITATIVE TECHNIQUES-E&T (EPHD902)

Assignment-5
Q.1 Describe the function of ANOVA in experimental design, modeling and optimization of process
parameters, also focus on its limitations.
Q.2 A research company has designed three different systems to clean up oil spills. The following
table contains the results, measured by how much surface area (in square meters) is cleared
in 1 hour. The data were found by testing each method in several trials. Are the three systems equally
effective?

System A 55 60 63 56 59 55
System B 57 53 64 49 62
System C 66 52 61 57
Use 5% level of significance. Also Use F = 3.89 at (α=0.05, df1=2. df2=12).

Q.3 List the differences in terms of merit and demerit of full factorial design of experiment and response
surface methodology.

Q.4 A study compared the effects of four 1-month point-of-purchase promotions on sales. The unit
sales for the five stores using all four promotions in the different months as follows:

Free sample 78 87 81 89 85
One-pack gift 94 91 87 90 88
Cents off 73 78 69 83 76
Refund by mail 79 83 78 69 81
Do the promotions produce different effect on the sales? Use 1% level of significance. Also Use F =
5.29 at (α=0.01, df1=3. df2=16).
Q.5 Four brands of flashlight batteries are to be compared by testing each brand in five flashlights.
Twenty flashlights are randomly selected and divided randomly into four groups of five flashlights
each. Then each group of flashlights uses a different brand of battery. The lifetimes of the batteries,
to the nearest hour, are as follows.

Preliminary data analyses indicate that the independent samples come from normal
populations with equal standard deviations. At the 5% significance level, does there appear
to be a difference in mean lifetime among the four brands of batteries?
