Introduction
Background of the Study
Parental involvement impacts student academics. In order for a child to reach
academic achievement, parents must be involved and participate in the education
process. The more parental involvement, the more students are likely to become
productive members of society as well as excel in academics. The objective of the
investigation is to examine the impact of parental participation in their child’s education.
Parental involvement is a crucial force in children’s development, learning and success
at school and in life. It is often important of parents to know that their children are the
future of the nation and their contribution of the development of society depends very
much on how we educate them. However, many parents are less concerned about the
academic performance of their children such that whatever the child is learning from the
school does not concern them so much but according to a study by Wilson, Cordry,
Notar, Friery (2004), teachers concur that they cannot do it alone, and for effective
educational processes to occur in classrooms, parental help in partnership with
educator is needed. When parents are actively engaged in their child’s education, the
absences of the students are reduce, children behavior is improved, the academic
performance is higher, and the communication between teachers and parents is
improved. Parental involvement is seen as parent reported participation at least once
during the year in attending general school meeting with their child’s teacher, attending
a school event or volunteering in the school or serving on a school committee (Child
Trend, 2013) parental involvement in the education of children has become very
important and a major issue of concern. It is wonder that parental involvement with
schools become a major educational issue in the 1980s. (Cotton and Wikelund,1989).
The involvement of parents in the education of children starts from early childhood
education where by children are sent to kindergarten, to the primary school, then to the
junior high school, trough to the senior high school then to the university.
Parental involvement can significantly enhance a student’s academic performance in
various ways. When parents actively engage in their child’s education, it often boosts
the student’s motivation and confidence, encouraging them put more effort into their
studies. parents also provide essential resources, such as books and a conductive
study environment, and offer guidance on academic tasks, which help students address
challenges effectively. Regular communication between parents and teachers ensures
that parents stay informed about their child’s progress and can promptly address any
issues. Furthermore, students with involved parents tend to develop better study habits
and attitudes toward learning, fostering a deeper understanding of the importance of
education. By creating a structured and supportive home learning environment, parents
academic outcomes, including better grades and higher levels of school engagement.
Parent involvement in a child’s early education is consistently found to be positively
associated with a child‘s academic performance (Hill & Craft, 2003). Parents can
enhance their child’ s academic achievement trough various strategies. Creating a
positive learning environment at home involves setting up a quiet, organized study
space and establishing a consistent daily routine that includes dedicated time for
homework and reading. Regular communication with teachers helps parents stay
informed about their child’s progress and challenges, allowing them to provide targeted
support. Encouraging a love of reading by offering discussion and critical thinking skills.
It’s important for parents to set realistic expectations, emphasizing effort over grades,
and to monitor and support homework and study habits. Additionally promoting
participation in extracurricular activities can foster a well-rounded skill set. Providing
educational resources and being a role model for lifelong learning can inspire a positive
attitude towards education. Finally, addressing any emotional stress related to school
activities can further demonstrate support and engagement in the child’s educational
journey. To effectively increase parental involvement in their child’s education and
enhance academic achievement, schools can adopt several strategies. Establishing
regular communication between parents and teachers through newsletters,
conferences, and digital platforms ensures that parents stay informed about their child’s
progress. Offering workshops and training can help parents understanding how to
support their child’s learning at home. Encouraging parental participation in school
activities and decision-making fosters a sense of community and share responsibility.
Providing resources for creating a supportive time learning environment, setting clear
academic Expectations, and sharing feedback about their child’s performance Further
engages parents. Building strong, respectful relationships between teacher and parents
and addressing potential barriers such as language issues or work schedules are also
crucial. Leveraging technology to keep parents informed and celebrating students’
achievements can reinforce a collaborative approach to education. By integrating these
strategies, schools can create a supportive atmosphere that promotes both parental
involvement and student success.
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this study is aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the
benefit
of parental engagement, inform effective policies and practices, empower parents and
educators, and ultimately contribute to a more equitable and supportive educational
system for all students. Parental involvement in a student’s academic life directly
impacts
their performance. Active participation, whether it’s assisting with homework, joining
extracurricular activities, or communicating with teachers, makes a real difference.
Parents who actively engage in their child’s education have been linked to improved
academic performance, better school attendance, and greater participation in advanced
courses.
Research Questions
This study will be guided by the following questions:
1. How does parental involvement impact a students academic performance?
2. In what ways can parents be involved in their child’s education to improve
academic achievement?
3. What are some effective strategies for increasing parental involvement in their
child’s education to enhance academic achievement?
Theoretical Lens
Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory examine the positive impact of
parental involvement on academic success. This theory posits that a child’s
development is influenced by multiple layers of their environment, from
immediate settings like family and school to broader societal contexts.
Microsystem affect the parental involvement directly. When parents are actively
engaged through helping with homework, attending school events, or
communicating with teachers they create a supportive learning environment at
home. This involvement can improve academic performance by reinforcing
learning, providing encouragement, and ensuring that students feel valued and
supported. Mesosystem, this layer represents the interactions between different
microsystems, such as the relationship between a child’s family and their school.
Effective communication and collaboration between parents and teachers can
enhance a child’s educational experience. Exosystem, this includes broader
social systems that indirectly influence a child’s development, such as parental
workplace conditions or community resources. Positive parental involvement can
be supported by having access to resources like flexible work schedules or
parental support groups, which in turn can affect a child’s academic success by
enabling more effective parental engagement. Macrosystem, this encompasses
the larger cultural and societal context, including educational policies and cultural
attitudes towards education. Societal values that emphasize and parental
involvement can influence how parents engage with their child’s learning.
Chronosystem, this dimension considers the element of time and how changes
and transitions over the life course affect development. Parental involvement
might have varying impacts depending on the child’s developmental stage and
life changes. By considering these systems, Bronfenbrenner’s theory highlights
how parental involvement in a child’s education can positively impact academic
success through direct interactions, supportive relationships, broader social
influences, and cultural values.
Delimitations and Limitations
This study is limited to Parental Involvement: The Positive Impact of Parental
Involvement on the Academic Success of a Students, its focuses on Parents, Teachers,
Policymakers and students of HIS at Ilustre High School, school year 2024 -2025.
Definition of Terms
Parental Involvement – the participation of parents in various aspects of their
children’s education.
Academic Success – the achievement of educational goals and outcomes
Engagement – the active and meaningful participation of parents in their child’s
educational experience
Parental Expectations – the attitudes and beliefs parents hold regarding their child’s
academic performance and future educational achievements
Student Motivation – the drive and enthusiasm as student has toward learning and
academic tasks, which can be enhanced by supportive and involved parents
Communication – the exchange of information between parents, teachers, and
students regarding academic progress

Review of Related Literature
Introduction
According to Rich (2003) examined parental involvement in schools and
discovered that children whose parents or other significant adults participate in
their formal education tend to perform better academically. Benefits of parental
involvement identified in rich’s study include higher grades and test score, long-
term academic success, more effective educational programs, and improved
school performance. Rich suggested that schools should foster an environment
where teachers are actively involved in implementing parental involvement
strategies. Hill (2013) investigated the relationship between parental involvement
and school performance, finding that parental involvement does not uniformly
impact all academic areas, his study also revealed that parental characteristics
such as age, gender, education attainment, occupation, and family income
significantly predict the level of parental involvement.

Methodology
This study aims to determine the positive impact of parental involvement on the
academic success of a students. In this chapter describes the methods and procedure
that was used in this research. It includes the following: Research design, Sampling
method, Locale of the study, Research participants, Data collection procedures, Data
analysis and Research question.
