Assignment 2

Data Communication and Networking

1. Explain the process of digital-to-digital encoding in data communication. Provide a

detailed overview of three different encoding techniques, such as NRZ (Non-Return-to-
Zero), Manchester encoding, and Differential Manchester encoding.
2. Explain the importance of error detection in data communication. Define common types
of errors that can occur during data transmission and elaborate on how techniques such as
parity checks and checksums are used for error detection.
3. Describe the process of encoding and modulation in digital transmission. Explain the role
of encoding in converting digital data for transmission and how modulation is employed
to transmit the encoded signals over a communication channel.
4. Explore the concept of quantization in analog-to-digital conversion. Define quantization
and discuss its role in representing continuous analog signals with discrete digital values.
5. Given a message of 1000 bits and using a CRC-12 polynomial, calculate the length of the
CRC checksum.
6. A communication channel has a bandwidth of 10 MHz. Calculate the maximum data
transfer rate (throughput) using Shannon's Channel Capacity formula if the signal-to-
noise ratio is 20 dB.
7. A fiber-optic link has a bandwidth of 1 Gbps. Calculate the time required to transmit a
500 MB file over this link.
8. Given a message polynomial M(x) = 101111 and a generator polynomial G(x) = 1101,
calculate the CRC code.
9. An analog signal has a bandwidth of 4 kHz. If the signal-to-noise ratio is 30 dB,
determine the theoretical maximum data rate using the Nyquist formula.
10. Provide an in-depth analysis of Circuit-Switched Networks. Discuss how circuit-switched
networks establish dedicated communication paths and the associated signaling
processes.
