I.

PROJECT BACKGROUND:

An architect's urban home + studio is a live-work space specifically designed for an architect to live
and work in the same building—typically located in an urban (city or town) setting. It combines a
residential area (home) with a professional workspace (studio/office), allowing the architect to manage
both personal and business activities within one integrated or semi-separated structure.

II. DESIGN PROBLEM:

Architect Alejandro Cruz, a well-respected Filipino architect known for his human-centered designs,
has finally carved out time to create his own sanctuary—a space that reflects his values both as a
designer and a family man.

` He owns a 300 sqm corner lot in a suburban neighborhood zoned R-2. With a young family—including a
toddler, a six-year-old, and his wife who works as a nurse—alongside aging parents, and a growing client
base, Arch. Cruz needs a home that seamlessly integrates his personal and professional life while
ensuring privacy, comfort, and functionality for all its users.

This project invites you to take on the role of the architect and imagine what this live-work dream
home would look like. Your team will design a three-storey residence with a fully functional architectural
office on the ground floor and private living quarters on the upper floors. The design should respond to
the lot’s corner location, zoning requirements, and the needs of a multigenerational household.

III. PROJECT OBJECTIVES:

1. Apply space planning principles to a multi-storey, mixed-use structure.

2. Integrate efficient zoning, accessibility, and safety across all user groups.
3. Promote sustainable design through passive strategies and green elements.
4. Foster collaboration through group work and shared design decision-making.
5. Strengthen skills in technical drawing, architectural research, and presentation.
